The smart way to curb pollution
Pen2Paper
With daylight savings fast
approaching dog owners are
reminded that their dogs must
be walked on leash between
10am and 8pm. At all other
times their dog must be under

means your dog is close to you

command. If you don’t think
you could call your dog back
under distraction of other dogs
or people, lease do not take your
dog off lead.

Mayors Message
We are coming up to an
exciting part of the year,
with many festivals and events
happening throughout the
Port Adelaide Enfield council
area over the summer.
It is a fantastic time to support
and be involved in your local
community, and enjoy what
the Port has to offer.
The variety of events and
activities that will take place
demonstrates that this is an
exciting and forward-thinking
area to live in, and I am proud
to claim such unique events
as our own.
We are lucky that most of
the events are free, and
open for everyone to come
and experience.
I would like to thank all
those involved in organising
the upcoming festivities for
promoting such inclusion.
It would be great to see you and
your family at these events, and
I will certainly be trying to
attend as many as possible with
my own family.
Stay switched on and tuned in to
all that is happening, by keeping
an eye out for information on all
upcoming events on the council
website and in Pen2Paper.
I encourage everyone to get
out there, enjoy the sunshine,
and just have fun at these
community events.
The Street Smart River Clean
initiative is helping businesses in the
Port Adelaide Enfield area clean up
their acts to cut back on stormwater
pollution, which has such a big
impact on our waterways.
Project officers provide local
businesses and industries with advice
and information about stormwater
pollution, offering a variety of free
services including an Environmental
Site Review that identifies key risk
areas with the potential to pollute.
If unchecked, it can result in
prosecution of the business.
For information or to arrange
a visit to your business please
contact an Environmental Project
Officer on 8405 6600.
Meanwhile, households can also
help prevent stormwater pollution
by washing cars (using a bucket
only) on the lawn to prevent runoff entering the stormwater drain,
not hosing down driveways – use
a broom to sweep it instead, and
making sure litter ends up in the
bin and not the street.
Street Smart River
Clean is a joint initiative
between the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield, the City
of Charles Sturt and the
Adelaide and Mount Lofty
Ranges Natural Resources
Management Board.

What we found in
your bins…
Some interesting facts emerge
when you look into the bins of
Port Adelaide Enfield residents.
Earlier this year Council
undertook a waste audit as
required under its Kerbside
Performance Agreement with Zero
Waste SA. This examined the
contents of waste, recycling and
garden organics bins across the
city, giving council an insight into
the current state of our kerbside
collections.
The waste audit revealed some
interesting facts. It found:
• Our waste bins contained around
19% of currently recyclable
materials such as paper, garden
waste and glass
• The yellow lid recycling bins
were contaminated with garden
waste (12%), and general
rubbish (12%)
• Contamination of the garden
organics bin was low (2.3%) but
quantities were also lower than
average, due to the effect of the
current drought.
These findings again highlight the
fact that we must “get it sorted”
and make sure we reduce our
contamination levels by placing
the correct materials into the
correct bin.
We need to sort
out our recycling
even more!
Thanks for a great
year – and do
drop in
The introduction of the new three
bin system last year has resulted in
a significant increase in the amount
of recycling diverted from landfill.
Now the challenge is to raise the
bar even higher and recycle more of
our valuable resources.
Although nearly two thirds of our
residents are now using their yellow
lidded bins to recycle household
waste, the overall tonnage of
recycled materials is no longer
increasing as fast as we’d like.
This tells us that some residents
may not be aware of all items that
can be recycled – so please take a
look at the following list and see
if you can recycle even more:
•paper, cardboard and cartons
•empty pizza boxes, food boxes,
tissue boxes, toilet rolls
• envelopes, includes windows ones
• Magazines, newspaper, books,
junk-mail, office paper, calendars
•rinsed take-away coffee cups,
cake boxes
•cartons (milk, custard, juice,
stock, ice-cream)
•metal cans and tins
•empty aerosol/spray cans
•food/drink cans and tins,
including metal lids
•pet food cans
•alfoil trays
•plastics that hold their shape
•drink bottles and containers
• detergent, cleaning product and
spray bottles (take the sprayer out)
•shampoo, conditioner and
cosmetic bottles
•yoghurt, ice-cream and butter
tubs
•fruit punnet containers
•plastic meat and biscuit trays
•clean plant pots
•glass including glass jars
•beverage and medicine bottles
Packaging around toys and other
new products can often be recycled.
Just separate the cardboard from
any plastic that might also be
included, and if the plastic holds
its shape you can recycle that too –
but please no polystyrene.
For any questions you have on
waste and recycling please
contact the Waste Line on
1800 777 844 (free call).

Send a letter to
Santa
It’s almost that time again and
Father Christmas and his elves
have been busy all year making
toys ready for Christmas Day.
The Port Adelaide Enfield Public
Library Service has agreed to be a
drop off point for any Christmas
letters that children send to
Father Christmas and the elves
will then come to the library to
pick them up.
When you come into your local
library, look for the special
Christmas writing paper provided
for you to write your letters to
Father Christmas. Then you can
post them in our very special
post boxes. Father Christmas
will answer all letters, so make
sure you put your home address
details clearly on the bottom of
the letter.
Each of Port Adelaide Enfield’s
five libraries will have a post box
and they will be available from
12 November until 12 December.
So please call into your closest
library to make sure Father
Christmas gets your letter
on time.
Playstations now
@ your library
In addition to our public access
computers, the Semaphore and
Enfield libraries now have a
playstation available for people
to use after school or during
school holidays.
Each library will have several
games to choose from and
bookings can be made online
through the computer
booking system or by

help you understand more about
your life and relationships. Your
name itself reveals information
such as personality traits, your
nature, qualities you possess, and,
yes, even faults and shortcomings.
The Parks Library - Council Office
will be hosting this free session

Newport Quays is sponsoring a
$2 million public art initiative
along the Port Adelaide
Waterfront Redevelopment,
open to artists throughout
the local area, across Australia
and overseas.
Newport Quays spokesman
Todd Brown believes public
art is a critical element of the
waterfront development. It
will also link with a broader
commitment by the Port
Adelaide Enfield Council to
commission public artworks
across the Port Adelaide city
centre, Semaphore Road and
beyond. Expressions of
Interest will be sought shortly
for the first major commission
which will be located on the
South Eastern side of the
Jervois Bridge.
The aim of the initiative is to
bring colour, light, history and
humour to the banks of the
Port River through a mix of
large and small installations.
Each will retain elements and
stories of the inner harbour’s
heritage, community stories
and fresh ideas.
The Port Centre Coordination
Group is also creating a resource
for artists wanting to interpret
and explore the living history
of the Port and its people. It
has started stockpiling maritime
artifacts and recyclable materials
such as wharf and building
timbers, which are expected to
provide a valuable resource for
artists to help them make clear
links to the past in their work.
There are up to 10 sites under
consideration for the public
artworks. For information and a

Art Framework go to:

Join the
Grafters war
on graffiti
As part of its
ongoing program for
the removal of graffiti, Council
recently identified the Semaphore
Foreshore as a hot spot that has
experienced high incidences of
graffiti vandalism.
As a result, Council has engaged
the services of two of its graffiti
removal volunteers to remove
graffiti along the foreshore from
Semaphore South through to
North Haven. To make it easier
for them, Council has introduced
an exciting and innovative
mode of transport known as the
Semaphore Foreshore Trikes.
New State of
Environment Report
The State of Environment Report
is a research and discussion
document presenting information
about the City’s natural and
physical environment. It
identifies changes over time,
issues and pressures affecting
the environment and provides
recommendations for planning
and management.
The State of Environment Report
is available on Council’s website
www.portenf.sa.gov.au and
contains chapters on:
• Human Settlements
• Heritage
• Atmosphere
• Inland Waters
• Coast & Estuaries
• Biodiversity
• Land
The State of Environment Report
will now inform the preparation
of a new ‘Environment Strategy’,
which will set out high level
strategies towards addressing
priority environmental issues
within the Council area. Call
8405 6600 for further details.
The move is part of
Council’s Graffiti Management
Program, which has a team of
dedicated volunteers known as the
“Grafters”, who seek and destroy
incidents of graffiti vandalism.
Grafters use rapid response
principles to tackle graffiti
vandalism. Council has service
standards to remove offensive
graffiti within 24 hours and four
working days for all other types of
graffiti vandalism. This minimises
the exposure of graffiti within the
community and denies graffiti
vandals the recognition they enjoy.
Last year more than
14,000 square metres of
graffiti was removed from
private, commercial and
Council-owned properties.
Community Art Projects
developed in partnership with
Government organisations,
schools, volunteers and
community groups have created
special projects such as the
aerosol art mural upgrade at the
Largs Bay RSL and the Largs
North Railway Station.
If you would like to become
involved with the Grafters, please
contact Council’s Coordinator
of Volunteers on 8405 6871.
Training, travel reimbursements and
volunteer insurance is provided.
Councillors rewarded for commitment
Cr Nichols (centre) with Mayor Gary Johanson (far left),
fellow councillors Hubycz (far right), family and friends at the reserve opening.
To recognise the dedication and
hard work of councillors Joyce
Snadden and Peter Nicholls, two
reserves have been renamed after
them. Both have served long
careers within the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield area.
The reserves were officially
opened by Mayor Gary Johanson
on 10 October, who gave a speech
at each outlining Snadden and
Nicholls careers. Joyce Snadden
has worked tirelessly at meeting
the wants and needs of the
community for over 30 years.
While Peter Nicholls has strongly
advocated for the preservation
of open space, including the
reserve now named after him in
Peterhead, for close to 40 years.
It is hoped that the reserves serve
as ongoing public recognition
for their time, commitment and
personal sacrifices to improve
the community.
Many of their colleagues came
to the openings to show their
appreciation, and both councillors
felt honered that they have been
rewarded for their work.
Have your opinions heard!
The Council is looking for new
members for its Youth Advisory
Group (YAG), so if you’re aged
between 15-25 years, and
want to make a difference,
join the group.
Being a part of the YAG, you
will be able to voice your
opinions to the council, and
members are encouraged to
actively engage in local events
such as the Youth Week
Celebrations in April. Other
activities include a camp to be
held in late April 2008, and a
possible trip on the One & All
Sail Voyage in December 2007.
YAG is a great way for young
people to make new friends,
receive free training, eat and
have a great time! If you are
interested in being involved
please call Doug on 8405 6709 or
Nicole on 8405 6723.

Navy Week 2007
SA Navy Week celebrations will
include a big Navy Open Day
which will showcase two modern
warships at Port Adelaide’s Dock
2 on Sunday 2 December between
10am and 3pm. The free Open
Day will compliment a number
of ceremonial activities around
Adelaide during Navy Week.
The Navy Open Day is an
opportunity to see the 4,100
tonne Guided Missile Frigate
(FFG) HMAS ADELAIDE up
close. In excess of 135 metres in
length and carrying a crew of 210
highly trained men and women,
HMAS ADELAIDE was the first
of six FFGs that were bought in
the 1980s and continue to be
operated by the Navy.
Adelaide will also be visited by
the 8,534 tonne Landing Platform
Amphibious ship (LPA) HMAS
KANIMBLA during Navy Week.
She can transport and support of
up to 450 army troops and their
equipment and vehicles, and can
support up to four Army Black
Hawk or three Navy Sea King
helicopters.
Commander Andrew Jackman
said that in addition to the two
warships, a number of exciting
displays are being planned and
visitors should really be able to
appreciate the fine work of the
Royal Australian Navy.
Other activities will include
displays by the local Navy Dive
Team, a ship’s Boarding Party
Team and Navy Cadet’s in action.
Defence Force and Navy Careers
Advisors will also be on hand
to talk with potential recruits
and interested bystanders
about careers in the Royal
Australian Navy.
The Navy Open Day takes
place at Dock 2, Port Adelaide,
accessible via Perkins Drive
& Eastern Parade. Follow the
signs from Commercial Road or
St Vincent Street or Port River
Expressway. A free shuttle bus
will operate between Dock 2, the

How to have
a ‘green’
Christmas
Christmas is a time for
giving, festivities and celebration
with your family and friends.
It can also be a time for giving
back to the earth and instilling
the values of sustainable living to
your children, friends and family.
Below are tips on how to have a
more sustainable green‚ Christmas

Christmas family tradition!
• Make your own Christmas cards
by reusing cardboard paper.
• Buy Christmas cards that are
made of recycled materials and
then recycle them again, or send
electronic greeting cards via email.
• Wrap gifts with recycled
wrapping paper and reuse
materials such as ribbon.
• Buy sustainable gifts, gifts with
minimal packaging and gifts
which don’t require batteries.
• Give a unique gift from a charity
or environmental organisation that
benefits more than one recipient.
• Recycle or compost all of
your Christmas waste.
News

gifts and locally
grown produce to
support the local
economy and reduce
impacts associated with transportation.
• Buy an Australian native
Christmas tree and then plant
it in the garden, to help reduce
greenhouse gases.
• Use Christmas lights and other
appliances for limited time periods
only, and turn off over night.
• Replace old Christmas lights with
energy efficient options such
as LED (Light Emitting Diode)
lights, which use up to 95%
less energy than traditional bud
lighting and have a longer life.

lighting displays.
• Make the switch to accredited
green power for your electricity
supply to support clean renewable
energy sourced from the sun, wind,
water and waste, which helps
reduce greenhouse emissions.
• Enjoy an organic Christmas
lunch; organic produce is
produced naturally using
sustainable agricultural practices
without artificial fertilisers,
pesticides or growth promoters.

Bike workshop a
roaring success!
Become an Artist In
Residence
You may have read in earlier
issues of Pen2Paper how the
Parks Community Centre
established a bike repair and
maintenance program for
refugees and people newly
arrived to Australia. The aim
of the program has been to
offer adults and children a
chance to select a bicycle,
learn how to repair and
maintain it, and then keep it,
as a fun and healthy means for
transport and recreation.
After a month of the program
being run, it has attracted much
attention, with over 16 bicycles
being given to proud new owners.
The Parks Community Centre
would like to thank those who
have donated bikes for the
program. If you would like to
be involved, contact Tara on
8243 5670.
The Parks Community Centre is
calling for practicing professional
artists who’d like to be part of its
Artists in Residence program this
summer. In exchange for use of the
well-equipped studio space, artists
will be asked to teach classes, give
their professional and technical
advice, and maintain the current
facilities and areas.
Areas include painting,
photography, sewing,
printmaking, pottery and
woodwork. The Centre provides
a great opportunity to be a part of
the local community in a friendly,
open and creative atmosphere.
All enquiries can be directed to
Brendan on 82435533.

A week to celebrate
Aboriginal culture
The Port Adelaide Enfield Council
has organised a week of events
to celebrate and recognise the
achievements of Aboriginal and
Torres Straight Islanders. Nunga
Week will be held between the
2-9 November 2007, and is
open for anyone and everyone to
come and experience. It is a great
opportunity for people to show
their support for reconciliation,
as well as enjoy the unique and
diverse Aboriginal culture.
On the first Monday Kura Yerlo
will hold an Open Day that runs
in conjunction with their 21st
Birthday. It will include live music
and dance performances, art
displays and a barbeque. It will be
officially opened by Minister Jay
Weatherill, and is certainly one of
the highlights of the week.
Throughout the week there will
be different activities and events
running in various locations in the
Port Adelaide Enfield area. There
is a Westfest Community Day at
the Parks Community Centre, the
Gilles Plains Zebra Finch Men’s
Group will be displaying art and
crafts at an Open Day, and the City
of Port Adelaide Enfield Aboriginal
and Torres Straight Islander
Awards Ceremony will also be held
towards the end of the week. This
is a particularly important part of
Nunga Week, as it acknowledges
the contributions Indigenous
individuals and groups have made
to the community.
Another event not to be missed
is the Kaurna Trail Reconciliation
Walk on 9 November. This walk
allows people to explore the areas
previously occupied by the Kaurna
people. It will begin at the Minories
in Port Adelaide, with speeches from
the Mayor as well as Kaurna elders,
and will then follow the Port River
along to Tira Appendi on Church St,
where tea and coffee will be served.

Celebration of Ability
goes Country style
Planting artistic ideas
in the garden
Are your children eating
enough fruit and veg?
The annual Celebration of Ability
event will be held this year on
Monday 3 December, at Enfield
Community Centre.
The event, which has been
held by the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield for the
past nine years, is part of
the United Nations Day for
People with a Disability.
“It demonstrates a unique
collaboration between local
government, other service
providers and people in the
community with a disability,”
said Council’s Team Leader
of Community Services and
Programs, Leanne Davis-King.
“It is a celebration that sets
out to expand the opportunities
available to people with a
disability, and is a way of showing
Port Adelaide Enfield Council’s
commitment to supporting them.
It is also an excellent opportunity
to raise awareness about disability
issues in our community.”
This year’s event starts at 10.30am
with a focus on a Country theme.
Participants can come in Country
outfits or simply
wear a cowboy
hat, and enjoy
a range of free
entertainment
and activities including a free
barbeque lunch.
There will also be
raffles with prizes
donated by local
businesses.
For more
information please
contact Leanne
Davis-King on

Kurruru Pingyarendi, the Turning
Circle community garden, has
received funding from the Port
Adelaide Enfield Council to help
create community artworks that
will be located throughout the
garden. It is an opportunity for
enthusiastic, local, emerging
artists – particularly those
interested in mosaic, sculpture
and Indigenous art – to get
involved and work with a
diverse group of people to
produce these artworks.
The garden’s organisers also want
you and your family, friends or
organisation to be a part of the
project, even if you don’t have
any particular artistic background.
All ideas and skills will be warmly
welcomed.
If you would like to register your
interest, contact Annegret, Jo or
Allan at Gilles Plains Community
Campus on 8334 8400.
Children, in particular, need
sufficient nutritious foods to grow
and develop normally. This helps
to maintain a healthy weight and
prevent diseases such as type 2
diabetes, heart disease and some
cancers from occurring later in
their lives.
Unfortunately, too many South
Australian children are not eating
enough healthy foods, particularly
fruit and vegetables. Children are
overeating energy dense, nutrient
poor ‘junk’ foods that provide
plenty of kilojoules or calories,
but very little else.
Parents play an important role
in influencing consumption
of healthy foods and helping
children to develop lifelong
healthy eating habits. They must
educate children about fruit
and vegetables, encourage them
to taste new and exotic fruit
and vegetables, and supporting
children by making the healthy
choice the easy choice.

Celebrating the history of the Port in unique performance
The next
Vitalstatistix
performance,
Second to None,
will be like nothing
they’ve done before.
A large-scale, multisite celebration of
the Aboriginal and
maritime history
of Port Adelaide, it
involves an historic
collaboration
between

Theatre Company,

Indigenous Youth
Performing Arts
and the local
community.
Mural revitalises the western suburbs
At the main entrance to Centro
Arndale, you will see a bright,
colourful mural produced by
youth from the Parks Community
Youth Service in collaboration
with Jimmy C, a well recognised
local aerosol artist.
Parents can do this by providing
foods based on vegetables, fruit,
bread and cereals at every meal.
Limit the availability of snacks
such as potato chips, biscuits, soft
drinks and pies – and check out
the Go for 2&5® website
www.gofor2and5.com.au for great
snack and meal ideas like frozen
fruit, vegie sticks and salads.
Of course, parents also need to
practise what they preach and
show kids that eating fruit and
vegetables is easy and enjoyable.
Remember that changing eating
habits can take time, so set small,
achievable goals each week.
With the help of Jimmy C, the
youth produced the final design,
which involved taking photos
of people at Arndale Shopping
Centre and creating artistic
representations of them. Many
of the youth’s faces are also
incorporated into the mural, and
there is an Indigenous symbol,
which represents ‘meeting place,’
in the centre of the mural.
Housing SA and Urban Pacific
Limited, in conjunction with the
Cities of Port Adelaide Enfield,
Parks Community Centre,
organised this Westwood Project
to revitalise the area, both visually
and socially. It is clear that so far
it has been a success, as it has
actively involved young people
in the community, and now
provides a fantastic entrance
to the shopping centre. The
organisers and artists hope that
the work inspires individuals and
encourages respect for public
spaces and other people.
The performance will take place
at four sites of local historical
importance, with the audience
travelling between venues on buses.
At each stop they will be treated
to dynamic dance pieces, beautiful
lighting and visual effects, and
actors performing as historical
characters and travel guides.
Performance sites include
White Hollows by the beach
at Largs Bay, Glanville Hall,
which became St Francis House
where Aboriginal children were
housed and educated; Hart’s Mill,
which housed the first industry
established in the Port; and the
Port Adelaide Waterside Workers
Federation Hall, home to many
significant community events
over the years and now the home
of Vitalstatistix.
After the performance audience
members will be invited back to
Waterside Hall for drinks and
musical entertainment, and to
browse through an exhibition of
historic images, texts, audio
and video recordings.
Performance dates are 22-25
November, starting at 7.30pm.
The exhibition is open to the
public from 22 November to
5 December.
For more information, or to
register as a volunteer, call
Vitalstatistix on 8447 6211,
or Kurruru on 8341 1150.
Bookings are strictly limited and
can be made through Vitalstatistix
on 8447 6211.
