Chapter 1 and 2 Review
1. Who is the narrator of the novel? How old is he?
Ponyboy is the narrator. He is fourteen
years old.
2. What happened to the Curtis boys’ parents?
Their parents died in a car accident.
Darry now raises Pony and Soda.
3. Name the two different groups of teenagers in
the novel.
The two groups are the greasers and
the Socs.
4. What is the difference between “tough” and
“tuff”?
Tough means rough, and tuff means
cool. Both are compliments.
5. Why did the Socs beat up Ponyboy on his
way home from the movies?
They don’t say for sure, but it
doesn’t seem like they had a reason.
Maybe it is just because he’s a
greaser.
6. Why does Ponyboy have a hard time
with his oldest brother (Darry)?
Ponyboy thinks that no matter
what he does, Darry gets on his case.
It seems like Darry might just be looking
out for him though.
7. How does Ponyboy describe himself as being
“different” from the rest of the Greasers?
Ponyboy is different from the rest of
the greasers in a few ways. First, he’s
younger than all the others. Also,
Ponyboy does well in school. He says he
likes movies and books better than the
rest of the guys.
8. Why did “Two-Bit” get his nickname?
Two Bit got his name, because he
always is cracking jokes and has to get
his “two-bits” or funny comment in.
9. How does Ponyboy feel about Steve and
why?
Ponyboy doesn’t really like Steve,
because Steve treats Pony like a tagalong. Since Steve is Soda’s best friend,
Pony is friendly with him.
10. In what ways is Dallas “Dally” different
from the rest of the gang?
Dally is tougher than the rest of the
gang. He lived in New York and he has
spent time in jail.
11. Why does Ponyboy refer to Johnny
Cade as “the gang’s pet” and
“everyone’s kid brother”?
Johnny’s parents beat him up
and ignore him, so the gang is like
his family. Also, Johnny is smaller
than the other guys and he was
beaten badly by the Socs, so
maybe they feel like they need to
take care of him.
12. What kind of girls do greasers
usually date and why?
The greasers usually date loud
tough girls, who wear too much
makeup, swear too much, and
wear skirts that are too short. They
date these girls, because, as
Ponyboy says, they are the only
girls that will go out with them.
13. Where do the Socs hang out?
The Socs hangout at The
Way Out and Rusty’s.
14. Where do the Greasers hang
out?
The Greasers hangout at
The Dingo and Jay’s.
15. What kind of rules do gang
members follow in fights?
Greasers don’t use weapons, just
fists, and they don’t gang up on each
other. They fight “fair” one on one.
They think that fighting can be a good
way to blow off steam. Even the day
after a fight, the guys would still have
each other’s back.
16. Which Greaser “…had spent
three years on the wild side of New
York and had been arrested at the
age of ten”?
Dallas “Dally Winston
17. Which Greaser looks like “a little
dark puppy that has been kicked
too many times and is lost in a
crowd of strangers…”?
Johnny Cade
18. What is Johnny’s home life like?
Johnny’s father beats him up and both
parents ignore him. We even learn that his
father beat him with a 2x4 at one point.
19. When Ponyboy and Johnny first meet Cherry
and Marcia at the movies, how do the girls react
to the Greasers?
When the girls first meet the greasers Dally is
bothering them. Cherry and Marcia start off
ignoring him. Then Cherry begins giving him lip
back. Marcia refers to them as “greasers” and
both girls are disgusted by Dally. Before Ponyboy
or Johnny even speak to the girls, Cherry worries
that they will be like Dally. After they start talking
though, Cherry realizes they are different.
20. Why did Cherry and Marcia leave their
dates?
Cherry and Marcia’s left their dates,
because their dates were drinking.
Cherry says that’s not her idea of fun.
21. Why do you think that Johnny spoke up
to Dally at the movies?
I think he spoke up to him, because
he appreciated that Cherry was willing
to treat him with respect. He also
probably knew that Dally would let him
get away with it, but wouldn’t have let
Pony.
22. What does Cherry learn about
the Greasers while she is at the
movies with Ponyboy and Johnny?
Cherry learns that not all
Greasers are alike. Pony for
example is thoughtful and smart.
23. What does Ponyboy learn
about the Socs while he is talking
to Cherry?
Pony also learns that not all
Socs are alike. Cherry is willing to
associate with him when most Socs
probably wouldn’t. Cherry also
tells him that Socs have problems
too, but Pony finds that hard to
believe. (You can add to this
answer after reading Chapter 3.)
24. The last two sentences of Chapter Two
are an example of foreshadowing. What is
the definition of foreshadowing, and what
do you predict will happen in the story
based upon the sentences from Chapter
Two?
Foreshadowing is a hint or clue
about what is going to happen
later in the story. These lines
indicate that Ponyboy will find out
about some of the problems Socs
face.

Chapter 3 and 4 Review
1. What does Cherry tell Ponyboy is the “real”
difference between the Socs and the Greasers?
The real difference is that Socs are always
putting on a show and pretending to be something
they’re not. They don’t let their true selves or feelings
show through. Cherry says Socs don’t feel enough,
and Pony says greasers feel too much.
2. Who is Mickey Mouse and why is he so important
to Sodapop?
Mickey Mouse was “Soda’s horse,” but he
actually belonged to someone else. He was so
important, because it was the one thing Soda really
wanted. It’s sad though, because he never really
had what he wanted, because the Curtises couldn’t
afford Mickey Mouse. Then, he lost the horse, and
there was nothing he could do about it.
3. Why does Ponyboy remind Cherry that they
both watch the same sunsets?
This is symbolic connection between the
two characters. Since the both watch sunsets it
shows that they are able to slow down and
appreciate things. Also, it is something
anyone—greaser or Soc can enjoy.
4. Why was Johnny scared when the blue
Mustang pulled up next to them on the street
when they were walking the girls home from
the movies?
Johnny was beaten badly by Socs who
were riding in a blue Mustang. It turns out these
are the same Socs. Johnny can tell by the rings
on Bob’s hand.
5. Name three things Cherry tells Ponyboy
before she gets into the car with Bob (45)?
How do they make Ponyboy feel?
She tell him she won’t be able to talk to
him at school, because they’re not in the same
class, and she says that her parents wouldn’t
want her to be friends with him. This makes
Pony “wish he were dead.” She also tells him
that she could fall in love with Dallas Winston,
and this totally confuses Ponyboy.
6. What happens between Ponyboy and Darry
after Ponyboy falls asleep in the park?
Darry hits Ponyboy. Pony has never been
hit by anyone in his family before. He’s so
upset, he runs out of the house.
7. Why was Darry so upset with Ponyboy?
Darry was worried about Pony. He didn’t
know where he was, but he couldn’t call the
police, because he’s worried they’d put Ponyboy
and Soda in a home.
8. Describe the events that lead up to the death of
the Soc.
Cherry and Marcia’s boyfriends pull up at the
park where Johnny and Ponyboy are watching the
stars. The Socs are with friends and they are drunk.
The Socs remember that Johnny and Pony were
with their girls. They start struggling with them and
one of the Socs holds Pony’s head under the water
of a fountain in the park. Pony feels as though he’s
going to drown. Suddenly he’s let up and sees
that Johnny has stabbed Bob.
9. Who do Ponyboy and Johnny turn to
when they are in trouble and why?
Johnny and Pony go to Dally. I think
they go to him, because he’s had the most
experience with bad situations.
10. What does Dally Winston give the boys to
take with them to Windrixville?
He gives them a loaded gun, his jacket,
and some money.
11. What plan is established to help Ponyboy
and Johnny “lay low”?
They’re going to hop a train to Windrixville
tonight and stay at an abandoned church.
Dally tells them to buy a week’s supply of food
before the story gets out. Then they shouldn’t
leave the church. Dally will be up to see them
in about a week.
12. Describe where Ponyboy and Johnny
hideout?
They hide out at an abandoned Church
on Jay Mountain. Pony says it’s spider-webby
and spooky. It’s surrounded by woods and
there’s a water pump out back.
