The college has been affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since its inception, yet has remained a nonsectarian school welcoming students of all religious affiliations. A typical day for the Christian College students started at 6 a.m. with a morning walk before gathering for chapel. Students attended classes until late afternoon, then wrote a daily composition. They studied arithmetic, ancient history, grammar, ancient geography, philosophy, the Five Books of Moses and composition. After they studied and completed chores, the students attended a Bible lecture every evening. *revised January 2016 1851 Christian Female College receives charter from Missouri Legislature 1856 150 students enroll, including 85 boarders 1861 Civil War begins; college remains open thanks to faculty who stayed on knowing they may go unpaid 1862 Only three students graduate; four more graduate the following year 1893 Luella St. Clair, a “steam engine in petticoats,” serves three terms as the president and is one of the country’s first female college presidents 1890s St. Clair leads construction of four new buildings — St. Clair Hall, Dorsey Hall, Launer Auditorium and Missouri Hall, all of which are still in use today 1866 Largest enrollment to date with 182 students taught by nine faculty members 1865 Civil War ends with Christian Female College never missing a day of classes 1900 First traditional Ivy Chain ceremony is held 1970 Christian Female College changes from two-year, all-female college to four-year, coeducational college and changes name to Columbia College 1973 Columbia College becomes one of the first colleges in the country with extended campuses on military bases 1996 Columbia College offers its first graduate degree, the Master of Arts in Teaching, followed by the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Science in Criminal Justice 2014 Scott Dalrymple, Ph.D., is inaugurated as the 17th president of Columbia College 1959 1961 2011 Columbia College launches new branch to articulate dedication to the private college experience for engaged students of all ages and backgrounds 1963 1970 COLUMBIA, MISSOURI COLUMBIA SINCE • MISSOURI 1851 1996 2000 Columbia College launches its Online Education Program 2011 By the Numbers 3,180 Students who took courses at the Columbia, Missouri, campus in academic year 2014-15 (registered in Day or Evening courses) 21,264 Students who took an online class in academic year 2014-15 846 Number of fans needed to pack Southwell Complex 51 Number given to the Columbia College mascot Scooter the Cougar in honor of the college founding in 1851 838 Adjunct faculty members at nationwide and online campuses Number of undergraduate classes offered through the Online Education Program 800 80,000 396 Number of parking spaces available for on-campus housing 3 Number of residence halls at the main campus 1 Number of apartment complexes 10 Number of associate degrees 59 Number of bachelor’s degrees 4 Number of master’s degrees 72 Number of full-time faculty members at the Day campus 495 Number of full-time staff members 119 Number of part-time staff members 15 Number of NAIA competitive sports offered: men’s and women’s basketball, women’s softball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and baseball Number of proud Columbia College alumni worldwide 8:1 Ratio of students to faculty at the Day campus *revised January 2016 Service and honor Columbia College is a military-friendly school.
