SERVING
COMMUNITIES
Becoming a sustainable company requires
more than decreasing our environmental
impacts. It also means being a good social
steward, and taking care of our various
stakeholders, from our employees, our
investors, our residents and the communities
where our properties exist. Giving back is
an important piece of doing well by doing
good, and each year we look for new ways to
contribute our resources to improving the lives
of others.

Who
We are committed to ensuring our Grove
properties add value to the communities
we serve. On Arbor Day 2012, we kickedoff The Grove Urban Forest Initiative, a
program which engages local tenants to
help plant one native or adaptive tree,
shrub, or groundcover for every resident
(17,000 residents) in a twelve month span.
The goal of this program is to create a
diverse urban ecology at every Grove
location, increasing property aesthetic
and asset value.

Creating an urban forest at each location
is no small feat. Phase one of this
program began this spring, when we
installed 25% of the program. Based on
the data gathered, we are implementing
irrigation and improved placement for the
remaining 75% to be installed at strategic
intervals this spring.
This initiative will continue to grow each
year, beginning on Arbor Day, at each
new development.

“The Urban Forest project generated a great deal of excitement for our residents and staff. It is well known that the land The
Grove at Fort Wayne is built on was once saturated with pine trees. By replanting trees on property there was a sense of
giving back to the land. The warm weather on April 24th lured residents out as we planted the trees and provided a picnic
lunch to all volunteers.
While promoting The Urban Forest project, we incorporated a Grove tee shirt contest; if we spotted you rocking out a Grove
Tee we took your picture and created a Facebook album for our friends to “like” your photo. The best Grove Tee picture won,
and the best picture coincidently was from The Urban Forest project! We had Grove tees hugging trees and shoveling dirt.
The energy created that morning was unlike anything else we have ever done. We all came together to give back to our
environment, and had a blast doing it. The day ended with our team singing “Look at us now, we plantin’ trees.”
It’s amazing how one simple act of giving back can bring a community together. On April 24th, the Grove staff and
residents came together within the community for The Urban Forest project. The bond that was created between us all
will forever stay strong, and the memories will last with us for a lifetime, while making a lasting impact within the our local
environment by planting 15 trees.”
