Agency Reports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina: Flyer distributed for upcoming haunted house. CAPS: CASA program will be starting in Salina. CASA advocates for abused and neglected children to ensure that their needs do not go unheard. CASA volunteers watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they do not get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. Often their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. Central Kansas Foundation: Red ribbons are available for Red Ribbon Week which serves as a vehicle for communities and individuals to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. Persons to be interviewed for CMCA are needed. Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA) is a community-organizing program that aims to reduce adolescents' access to alcohol through changes in community policies and practices. Central Kansas Mental Health Center: Flyers distributed, Mental Health Overview, Mental Health First Aid and Depression Support. Children’s Mercy Family Health Partners: enrollment and information materials distributed City of Salina: Program work emphasizing safety in emergency situations continues. Flyer distributed. Work continues to overcome language barriers in the area. DVACK: DVACK’s 9th Annual Festival of Trees is Friday, November 18 at the Ramada Inn. A silent and live auction of beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, quilts, holiday and traditional gift items will highlight the evening. Event includes Preview and Social Hour, Buffet Dinner and Benefit Auction. Cost is $40 per person. All proceeds benefit victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Salina and surrounding communities. For more information visit www.dvack.org or call the DVACK office. October is domestic violence month. K-State at Salina sponsored a walk to increase awareness. Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Salina: Worksheets and tools may be found on their website. Salina Area United Way: Invitation to paint a plate at the United Plates of Possibilities distributed. Posters for October 26 choir event distributed. Seven local choirs will showcase their talents in the Salina Area United Way and Stiefel Theatre’s Second Annual Salina Fall Choir Festival. Choirs participating this year 1 include: Trinity United Methodist Choir, Salina Gospel Choir, Redeemer Lutheran Church Choir, University United Methodist Church Choir, University Methodist Praise Band, Salina Chorale, Salemsborg Quartet and Salina South New Dawn Singers. The concert is free to the public, although donations will be accepted to help reach the 2011 Salina Area United Way Campaign Goal of 1.15 million dollars and help support Stiefel Theatre. Campaign DVDs are available to use at employee meetings. Community Resource Guides distributed. Salina Housing Authority: Working on updating web site. Potential clients of SHA are users of technology thus working to better serve their population. New brochure distributed. Circles (Out of Poverty) to increase the capacity of communities to address poverty, is in its beginning planning for Salina area. Salina Parks and Recreation: Flyer distributed for Fall Festival at KWU, in conjunction with Salina Parks and Rec, and for Smoky Hill Museum Haunted House. Salina Public Library: Users and borrowers numbers compared on items which were previously not thought of being associated with a library; historically libraries have been known for their books. Friends of the Library Sale announced. Special events and activities noted for youth services, including the annual Halloween Party. December 5 e-book collections management will see a positive change. Patrons will be able to download e-books using their Salina Public Library Card. The Volunteer Connection: Fall Fix Up report given. Thanks expressed to volunteers and sponsors. Youth Council working to address childhood hunger in Salina report given. YMCA: Fall sports saw over 700 kids participating. Winter sports starting. The Pound Plunge has over 1200 participants. Competitive Cheer will be a new offering at the YMCA. Tuesday rec. night at Cottonwood School is going well. Salina Community Services Council Meetings are held the third Friday of each month. The meeting location is the Salina Senior Center, 245 N Ninth, Second Floor Board Room. Attendees may purchase a meal for $3.50 or bring their own lunches. Please arrive by 11:50 a.m. if you are purchasing a meal to allow you time to get to the meeting upstairs by noon.
