Frog Dissection Pre-Lab Dissection • Respect for living things and the environment is considered essential for meaningful work in science and technology. Making Incisions • Rinse the frog in water • Place the frog in the dissection tray on its back. Pin (or tie) the limbs to the tray. Making Incisions • Lift the frog’s skin between the rear legs with the forceps • Use the scalpel to cut through the lifted skin, making the incision shown. Be careful to cut only the skin. Making Incisions • Repeat the incisions cutting through the muscle and bone layers • Be careful not to cut too deep or you may damage the organs underneath. Internal Examination • Identify all of the organs in the frog – – – – – A = Heart B = Liver C = Stomach D = Intestine E = Ventral Vein • Draw and label these organs on the frog diagram provided. Respiratory System • Use the labelled diagram to identify all of the organs. Circulatory System • Lift the liver gently to reveal the heart below • Remove the liver to reveal the gall bladder and pancreas. Digestive System • The heart and liver cover the digestive organs below them • Remove the liver to reveal the gall bladder, stomach and pancreas. Digestive System • Remove the stomach to reveal the other parts of the digestive system • The spleen, the large and small intestines Reproductive System • Identify if your frog is male or female Excretory System • Try to identify the kidneys – Long narrows organs lying against the dorsal wall
