Hag Ha-o-da-yah is the Hebrew equivalent for the Thanksgiving holiday. Though an all American holiday, it might very well be that the Pilgrins who instituted the Thanksgiving holiday derived its rationale from the Jewish festival of Sukkot that we celebrated last month. When we leave the comfort and familiarity of our home, and spend some time or eat our meals in the beautiful, yet sin pie, fragile and exposed-to-the-elements sukkah, we experience a sense of gratitude. It is almost inpossible to sit in the sukkah even when the air is cold and damp without feeling haN sheltering horne next to the sukkah. Even having a mere humble sukkah does remind inperfact wortd many people do not have as much as a hut, lice us that In our Or in the words of the Yiddish saying: When a Jew breaks one leg, he thanks God he did not break both . Still, Judaism provides us many more opportunities on a daily basis to offer our gratitude for so many parts of our lives; we need not wait for Sukkot or Thanksgiving to understand haN lucky we are just to wake up every morning. Indeed, our rabbis equipped us with a blessing to be recited upon awakening: "I give thanks to You, Etemal God who has , mercifully restored my soul within me. Your faithfulness is great. " That is why, I have come to understand the word- THANKSGIVING- as embodying and embracing two Jewish i'nperatives: To offer THANKS To carry out acts of GIVING and I am proud to say that at Temple Emanuel I we strive to fulfill both and on a daily basis. , Thanksgiving Basket Sorting Night Monday, November 19 at 7 pm We are collecting the following items Thanksf!iving Food Drive now. SAVE THE DATE: JEWISH GENETIC SCREENING AT TEMPLE EMANUEL On Sunday, December 2, we are hosting, in partnership with the Victor Center in Philadelphia, a day for Jewish Genetic screening. This event is open to the community and we encourage you to share this information with friends and family so they can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. The Victor Centers provide full service genetic counseling and screening for all individuals and couples interested in getting screened for Jewish genetic diseases. Genetic screening is a process in which, through a simple blood test, a person's genes are examined for changes, called mutations, in specific genes. A person who is found to carry a mutation in one or more Ashkenazi Jewish genetic disease genes is a healthy individual and is not at risk to develop the disease. Genetic screening is used to determine whether an individual or couple is at increased risk to have a baby with a hereditary disorder by passing on a gene mutation to their offspring. It Is strongly recommended that genetic screening be performed prior to pregnancy to afford the couple the most reproductive options. As was promised, Sarah becomes pregnant. Abraham and Sarah have a son whom they name Isaac and on the eighth day of his life he is circumcised. Sarah wants Hagar and Ishmael thrown out of their home so that Ishmael will not have any part of Isaac's inheritance. Hagar and Ishmael are cast out into the wilderness. Ishmael nearly dies but h is cry is heard and an angel of God reassures Hagar that Ishmael will live to become a great nation. God decides to test Abraham and commands him to sacrifice his son , Isaac. Because of Abraham's willingness to obey God's command, the promise of a great nation described as numerous as the stars in heaven and the sands of the seashore is repeated. November 10 Chayei Sarah Genesis 23:1 - 25:18 In Chayei Sarah, we have another opportunity to learn about the original Jewish family. Sarah, Abraham's wife, dies and Abraham seeks to insure that the next generation will continue the Jewish traditions, which he and Sarah have established. Abraham sends his servant Eliezer to find a wife for his son Isaac from among his kin. Eliezer travels to the land of Abraham's birth and returns with Rebecca, kin to Abraham and considered an appropriate wife. At the close of this portion, Abraham dies. November 17 Toledot Genesis 25:19 - 28:9 I n parasha Toledot, meaning generations, we learn about the generations which begin with Isaac. Isaac's wife, Rebecca is pregnant with twins, Jacob and Esau. Even before the twins are born, they fight in their mother's womb, a struggle that will continue throughout most of their lives. November 24 Vayetze Genesis 28:10 - 32:3 Vayetze (meaning "and he went oun, tells the story of Jacob leaving his home and traveling to the place where his mother Rebecca was born. Jacob stops for the night and falls asleep and has a dream. In the dream, angels are going up and down a stairway that reaches from the earth to the sky. God stands beside Jacob and tells h im that the ground he is lying on will one day belong to him and his descendants and that God will bless them.
