GET UP! (Your Chair Is Killing You)
The good news: Your chair is not trying to kill you.
The bad news: Sitting all day is not natural and can
be blamed for all sorts of ailments, including
obesity, says Dr. James Levine, author,
medical doctor and researcher. Even a little
movement done frequently will provide you
with much benefit. If you have a desk job,
just standing up every 15 minutes will do more good
than sitting all day and then doing 30 minutes of exercise later. Of course, both would be ideal.
How else can your family be active ?
Go on a Scavenger Hunt—
Hunt—Make a list of challenges: find
an orange colored leaf, get a neighbor’s business card or
signature, etc. You can do a photo hunt by snapping
photos of specific things, like a gecko, a blue house, a
child on a swing, etc.) Go in teams, set a time limit,
boundaries and decide where you will meet.
Use Pedometers—
Pedometers—Set goals of mileage or number of
steps for the week. Then, find out what each person did
to reach their goal.
Do Home Improvements—
Improvements—Wash windows,
sweep floors, weed the garden, and even
do laundry to work your muscles. Crank
up the fun and calorie burning by turning on
music. As an added bonus, everyone lear n s about
shared responsibility.
Play Together—
Together—Dancing in the kitchen or outside
(inspire the neighbors), tag, hide-and-seek, hop scotch,
goofy relay games are so much fun you won’t even realize it is exercise in disguise.

Parents Guide to the 5Rs
Responsibility
Know it! We are each accountable for our own
actions. Live it! As responsible people, we do
not blame others for our decisions or behaviors.
Teach it! Example: A child pushes his younger sibling because she pushed him first. He claims, “She made me do it.”
Explain that we are all in charge of ourselves. So, no matter
what another child does, he is still responsible for his actions.
When emotions have calmed, ask your child what can he do
better, the next time someone makes him angry.

One size does not fit all when it comes to nurturing children to
be well-behaved. Take a short quiz (one quiz for each child) and
get customized discipline strategies for your child.
http://hawaiiquitline.org/
People who stop smoking by using Hawaii Tobacco Quitline
may be 14 times more likely to quit permanently. Support to
help you quit on your own terms is free online. The site also has
a phone number to talk directly with someone: 1-800-784-8669.
Free Educational App: Read Me Stories
A new eBook for kids is added every day. Each
word is highlighted as the voice tells the story so
that kids can learn to read along. Reluctant and
avid readers will benefit. Find it online at

Cucumber Ribbon Salad
Trim the ends from a medium cucumber. Cut it
in half crosswise and peel into strips. Whisk 2
tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil,
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil, 1/2 teaspoon
honey, salt, and pepper. Toss the dressing with
the cucumber and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.
Guess what? Cucumbers are anti-inflammatory,
anti-carcinogenic and contain antioxidants!
2 Tips to Beat Procrastination
1. Start anywhere. Have you ever heard of
the Zeigarnik effect? That is the fact that people
tend to remember unfinished tasks much better
than completed ones. Here is how you can use
this to your advantage. Start any part of your
project. Until you complete it, you will feel a
need to keep going. Keep your ongoing tasks to
a reasonable number, so it does not lead to feeling overwhelmed.
2. Be kind to yourself. Procrastination is a
common problem; you are not alone. Forgiving
yourself is more helpful to get you moving than
criticizing.
