 The purpose of this document is to provide you with an overview of and answers to our most frequently asked questions about the Jenny Craig weight loss program offered at Cleveland Clinic. Overview With Jenny Craig, you get a comprehensive, simple, and proven approach to weight loss*. We give you everything you need to succeed. Plus you have options for accessing the program to best fit your preferences and lifestyle. With either option, you receive unlimited access to your own dedicated one-­‐on-­‐one consultant. Jenny Craig In Center – When you join Jenny Craig and choose our In-­‐Center program, you’re taking advantage of our in-­‐person consultant/member experience. Jenny Craig Anywhere – When you join and choose our Jenny Craig Anywhere program, you’ll get the same great one-­‐on-­‐one support for when you’re on the go. Available 7 days a week throughout North America, your personal one-­‐on-­‐one consultant is there to talk by phone or through chat. Jenny Craig Anywhere also has extended hours for more flexibility, including evenings. And face-­‐to-­‐face interaction is available through video chat. How It Works The Jenny Craig program is designed to provide structure and support to help members lose weight and learn how to keep it off. One-­‐on-­‐one consultations provide personal support and education on portion control and strategies such as the Volumetrics® Approach, which helps with satiety. Dedicated Jenny Craig consultants work with each member individually to identify their strengths, challenges and personal goals in order to create unique weekly meal and activity plans that fit personal needs. Consultants also help members implement behavioral strategies to support their success. The Jenny Craig program provides nutritionally-­‐balanced menus, which include approximately 80 delicious entrees, desserts and snacks developed by dietitians, nutritionists, and food technologists. Jenny Craig’s comprehensive approach to weight loss is available to members either in person in centers or by phone with Jenny Craig Anywhere. At Jenny Craig, we've made personal support the cornerstone of what we do for 30 years. Members can meet with their dedicated consultant face-­‐to-­‐face at approximately 600 centers worldwide, or connect by phone or video chat with a consultant who will be there throughout their program. One-­‐on-­‐one consultations provide personal support and education on portion control, healthy eating, physical activity and the behavioral skills to achieve a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Jenny Craig consultants work with each member individually to identify their strengths, challenges and personal goals and motivators in order to create unique weekly meal and activity plans that fit their needs. Consultants also help members implement behavioral strategies for lifestyle change such as self-­‐monitoring, goal setting, planning for rewards to help members maintain the motivation to reach and maintain their weight and health goals. Through the personalized consultation, Jenny Craig addresses key challenges members might face, like managing stress eating, planning for dining out/social events, and incorporating more physical activity into their daily lives. What can I expect with Jenny Craig Food? During the initial phase, incorporate Jenny Craig Food into 3 main meals and 3 snacks while following a personally-­‐customized menu. Members can still eat their favorite foods while losing weight and do not need to eliminate any food groups. The Jenny Craig menu is a model for balance, variety and moderation in food choices and demonstrates that no food groups are off limits. Jenny Craig consultants work with each member individually to identify their strengths, challenges and personal goals in order to create unique weekly meal and activity plans that fit individual needs. Jenny Craig frequently introduces new menu items, like the Turkey Bacon & Egg White Sandwich, the Southwest-­‐Style Chicken Fajita Bowl and also shakes which were all launched in early 2015. The menu items are healthier versions of favorites, such as Chicken Fettuccini, and also feature fan favorites including the Red Velvet Cupcake, Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Potato and Chicken Pesto Pasta. The Jenny Craig food is designed to help members learn portion control, maintain calorie consistency for weight loss and enable one to safely indulge in favorite foods. The program helps members “retrain their palate” to recognize healthy choices as delicious ones. The structure of a pre-­‐planned menu with portion-­‐controlled cuisine can help one feel more in control of their eating while teaching how to plan their own healthy menus in the future. New 2015 Jenny Craig packaging is designed to help Jenny Craig members make informed eating decisions and offers ideas to spark member creativity to use meals for a variety of recipes. What is Jenny Craig’s approach to physical activity? Jenny Craig takes a lifestyle approach to physical activity. Consultants work with members to create plans tailored to each individual, with a goal to get up to 10,000 steps a day to support consistent weight loss. Strength training is also encouraged, depending on the member. What is the average weight loss for a Jenny Craig member? Standard program: Jenny Craig members may expect an average of 1-­‐2 pounds of weight loss a week, which is a healthy range of weight loss. Jenny Craig for Type 2: Participants following the lower carbohydrate Type 2 diabetes menu over a twelve (12) month period, on average, had weight loss of 9% and maintained a lower hemoglobin A1C of 6.6% as compared to usual care. Our expert panel provides ongoing, cutting-­‐edge counsel that helps us keep our program strategies current and up-­‐to-­‐date. They play a pivotal role in the development of the nutritional, behavioral and physical activity components of our clinically proven program. Our Registered Dietitian and team of nutritionists develop all of Jenny Craig’s menus to ensure every meal is nutritionally balanced and delicious. They also develop the behavioral strategies and coaching approach to support weight management success. The program is backed by hard science as demonstrated by a 2010 independent two-­‐year clinical trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showing that participants on the Jenny Craig program lost three times more weight than dieting on their own.* What is the Volumetrics® Approach? Jenny Craig incorporates the Volumetrics® Approach based on the research of Dr. Barbara Rolls of PSU to help members feel fuller and more satisfied longer by consuming low-­‐calorie-­‐density foods rich in water, fiber and lean protein. Key strategies include starting meals with broth-­‐based soups and salads, as well as building more non-­‐starchy vegetables and other “free” foods into your meals, entrees and snacks. How much will I spend on food? The daily average food cost is $15-­‐23/day Plus the cost of shipping, if applicable. Shipping is just $29 for 3 weeks of Jenny Craig food. How can I make the program work with my budget? Together, you and your consultant can work together to create a customized menu that works for you. How can I be on the program when I have to cook for my family? Most meals take about 5–10 minutes to prepare, including salads and free foods—so those few extra minutes can be used to prepare your meal along with the family meal. Also many members prepare a dish that is similar to their Jenny Craig entrée and then prepare a salad and side vegetable for everyone to share. This enables you to enjoy eating a healthy meal together as you stay focused on your goals. Is the food good? The Jenny Craig foods are healthier versions of your favorites. In 2015 we’ve introduced a variety of world-­‐
inspired cuisine, including Italian, Mexican, and Asian-­‐style foods, as well as hand-­‐held breakfast items. In fact, Jenny Craig was just awarded as “best tasting” meal delivery diet program according to NextAdvisor. What happens if I reach a plateau? Although plateaus don’t happen to everyone, they’re common occurrences for anyone trying to lose weight—
and your consultant has lots of strategies to help get you back on track. Since a plateau can be caused by a number of factors, your consultant will work closely with you to determine what might be causing your weight loss to temporarily stall. Then you’ll work together to adjust your menu, activity or other behaviors…and get you headed in the right direction. What happens after I reach my goal weight? First, you celebrate a job well done! Then work with your consultant to make the transition to maintenance menus made up of mostly your own foods. Many members choose to continue to include one entrée/snack per day for the convenience, calorie consistency and reminder of moderate portions. Is this weight loss program healthy? The Jenny Craig program reflects the guidelines of major governmental and health organizations, including the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. It is designed to promote a safe, moderate weight loss of 1-­‐2 pounds per week or 1% of current weight after the first week. Does Jenny Craig offer a program for Type 2? Yes! Jenny Craig offers a type 2 diabetes program, Jenny Craig for type 2. A recent clinical trial that included our new type 2 program, whose findings were published in the April 23, 2014 issue of Diabetes Care, found that people with type 2 diabetes who followed the Jenny Craig type 2 diabetes program for one year lost more weight, had significantly lowered HbA1c (blood sugar) levels and reduced heart-­‐related risk factors than people who received the usual standard of care**. How does Jenny Craig help me lose weight without being hungry? There are multiple ways that Jenny Craig can help you stay satisfied as you lose the weight. 1. Each day features 3 meals and 3 snacks. Having frequency and consistency in your eating pattern will help keep you satisfied throughout the day. 2. Our focus on the Volumetrics Approach means you’ll have a variety of options for adding broth-­‐based soups, salads and non-­‐starchy vegetables to your meals that add flavor, volume, and satisfaction for fewer calories. 3. Emotional satisfaction is just as important as physical satisfaction. Having approximately 80 premium foods from which to choose means you don’t have to miss out on your favorite foods – but can enjoy them in healthier versions. 4. If you struggled with food cravings in the past, not to worry. Your Consultant has a variety of behavioral strategies help you manage this essential skill for weight management success. 5. Built-­‐in controls – When you’re not sure what your next meal will be, it’s easy to let cravings take over. That’s when your Jenny Craig menu can be a great asset to your weight loss success. A set framework can stop your mind from wandering to “what would taste great now” and keep you focused on your goal. Which special populations cannot enroll in Jenny Craig? The following conditions are not supported by the Jenny Craig program, and therefore we are not able to enroll participants with the following conditions: • Have a serious allergy to corn, corn products, or gluten due to the number of Jenny Craig food items that contain these food ingredients • Have a serious allergy to milk, soy, wheat, peanuts or tree nuts that result in throat swelling, rash, hives or anaphylactic shock • Have celiac disease • Are being treated with hemodialysis • Are currently being treated for anorexia/bulimia • Require a special diet (vegan, kosher, or halal) • Had a baby within the last 6 weeks • Are pregnant • Are an adolescent (13-­‐17 years old) with any health condition except asthma or seasonal allergies Note: Please check the ingredients for all items prior to purchasing or consuming.
