26 July 2012 - Term 3 Week 2
Life Education Program Launch
It as such a delight to be part of the North Coast Life Education Launch yesterday. Centaur hosted this
special event and we were very pleased to showcase some of the great aspects of our school at the same
time. Special thanks to the tremendous students who took part and a huge well done to Mrs Jenny Foster
for all of her organisation.
Regional Director’s Awards for Excellence
I am very proud to announce that Mrs Mel Renshaw has been successful in receiving a Regional Director’s
Award for excellence. Mrs Renshaw will receive the award next week at an awards night to be held at
Banora Point High School next Thursday.
As a further success story, Centaur School has won an award for excellence in school culture. We too will receive the award on the same night. This school award has come about as a result of our entire
community embracing the challenge to develop a sense of community and nurture strong relationships between all stakeholders. Well done to everyone. It is great to be acknowledged for the work we are
doing. All are welcome to attend the night to be held at Banora Point High School from 5.00pm.
School Tour
It was such a treat to be able to show some new families around our school today. We had a lovely group
of parents and their children come along to see what Centaur has to offer. They all left being exceptionally enthused and were incredibly impressed with how well our students engage in every classroom.
We will be hosting another tour on Tuesday 4 September for any other interested families.
Class Congestion
I wish to apologise for the fact that all but two classes in our school are at absolute capacity. This is great
news but also means that the classes are full and very busy. We are very close to having enough students to
actually appoint a new staff member so here’s hoping we can cross that line very shortly.
Huge Savings
Make sure you take advantage of the huge saving on school jumpers at the moment (see accompanying note).
They are less than 1/2 price and well below the cost price to the school. We really appreciate every student
wearing the correct school jumper. Make sure you get your orders in asap - I am aware that sizes and stock are
quite limited.
CAC FM
I had the pleasure of listening to 92.5 this week and caught some of our very own CAC FM broadcast. Mr Rod
McLeod from 92.5FM has been working with our CAC class and is assisting to develop our very own Radio
Broadcast. CAC FM will be broadcast at school over the weeks ahead.

Upcoming Events
Life Education
Over the past two weeks many students have been to the Life Education van for a great educational experience. A huge thank you to Ms Nicole Ward the teacher for Life Education who
has presented some engaging and thought provoking lessons to the children.
Yesterday was the launch of the new Life Education sign and the introduction of Wheels for
Life in the Tweed.
Many visitors who are involved with Life Ed came to Centaur for this service and unveiling. A
huge congratulations to the choir and the three classes who were the audience for this
event. These students were extremely well behaved and many comments were made by our
guests as to how wonderful the children were. Well done also to the rest of the school who
were at recess whilst the service took place and one would never have known that there
were 400 children out playing. CONGRATULATIONS CENTAUR.
Salvation Army Seniors Day
On Wednesday 1 August a number of groups and classes will be performing for the senior
members of our community at the Salvation Army hall. The students will begin the performance at 10am. This is an opportunity for us to showcase Centaur but also to give back to the
community.
Lockdown Drill
As part of OH and S we are required to have a lock down practice twice a year. This will be
happening one day next week. Please talk to your child about this and that reiterate it is a
practice only to ensure that we are all safe. If you are on school grounds when this happens
you will also be in lockdown.
Know what’s happening at Centaur!
Keep a check on the website also.

CAC Radio
As part of our CAC media program, the CAC class are launching a radio station called CAC FM.
The students will 'broadcast' a couple of times a week by setting up some speakers on the
playground and reading from their prepared scripts and playing music for all to enjoy. To
launch this exciting program the CAC students visited the studios of 92.5 Gold Fm and 90.9
Sea Fm and toured the offices and studios. Students recorded themselves and were able to
see first hand all that is involved in this exciting industry. A massive thank you must go to
Bradley McLeod's father, Mr
Rod McLeod who showed us
throughout his workplace and
taught us all about the world
of radio.

Farewell to Aboriginal Elder
We held a farewell tribute last Thursday at our NAIDOC celebration for one of our favourite scripture teachers, Aunty Kath
Lena. Mrs Lena has been an integral part of the school and its
community since the opening in 1994. She has been and is a
favourite amongst the students and said it would be difficult
saying goodbye to her ‘babies’. “I think it is important to be able
to nurture the children through their young years and for the
elders to take their positions and look after them” said Mrs Lena
of her valued role in the school.

KW also enjoyed Aboriginal dreamtime stories on the interactive

Students reverently raised the Indigenous flag, sadly farewelled
their beloved 'nan' then enjoyed painting boomerangs. Ms Latoya Williams visited various classrooms to assist with dot painting.
Mrs Lena reminisced over morning tea with teachers and parents. She has recently self-published her first book, ‘My Life’
which took four years to write and is currently writing her second with the goal of passing down her history with the community.
Aunty Kath will be missed by all at Centaur.

Position
Mark the four major compass directions on
the ground. Ask your child to face north. Then
ask them to turn left or right in quarter turns
and ask them to state in which direction they
face.
Practice this a few times.
Students are then asked to face a place in the
playground and name the direction they are
facing.
P&A
To deepen understanding encourage your
child to build number relationships by relating
multiplication and division facts. Eg
