Textbooks
• Farlow, Hall, McDill, West, “Differential Equations & Linear Algebra, 2nd Ed.”
Course Description
The course is an introduction to differential equations and linear algebra. The first half
will deal with ordinary differential equations (ODEs). We’ll discuss qualitative methods as
well as learn how to solve specific types of ODEs. The second half will be the rudiments of
linear algebra (algebra dealing with lines, planes, etc) with an eye toward applications to
ODEs.
Please note that I won’t always strictly follow the textbook, so it is important to try to
attend every class, despite the crummy time. Having said that, I’ll try to update the course
website (http://www.math.ucsb.edu/∼casteels/math3c) with a description of the material
covered.
