Do you need statistical data? Activities of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia are directed towards providing high-quality statistical data to various user groups. These data are comparable in time, place and internationally. Just as the statistical data that we disseminate are diverse, so are the groups of users these data are intended for. Our main users are various government services, public administration bodies and organisations, economic entities, the general public and the media. The publication was prepared with the intention to enable the users to have a better insight into different ways how to obtain results of national statistics. We wanted to present all information channels by which users can access data and information, data collections and interesting interactive tools for data visualisation available on our website (www.stat.si/eng). We hope that you will use the data in making business and personal decisions or for monitoring the development of Slovenia through the eyes of national statistics. We present in detail all series (electronic and printed) within which publications are issued, regular serial publications and various occasional editions. The description of all types of publications is followed by the presentation of individual titles by fields of statistics. Publications from the series Brochures, Special Publications, Rapid Reports (issued in 2011 and 2012) and most occasional editions are more extensively presented. You will also be able to find information on announced issues of Brochures, occasional editions (for 2012 and partly for 2013) and publications in the Rapid Reports series (to be published in 2012). Thank you very much for expressing interest in our statistical data. We hope you will be able to find in this publication much useful advice how to easily access official statistical data and information. THE STATISTICAL OFFICE PRESENTS ITSELF Photo: Ada Poklač 8 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? MISSION OF THE STATISTICAL OFFICE The mission of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (Office) is to implement the activity of national statistics, which means that the Office provides to public administration bodies and organisations, the economy and the public data on the status and trends in the economic, demographic and social fields, as well as in the field of environment and natural resources. These data are comparable in time, space and internationally. "All the statistics in the world can't measure the warmth of a smile." Chris Hart The Office implements the activity of national statistics together with other authorised producers (Bank of Slovenia, Ministry of Finance, Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Public and Legal Records and Services, Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia, Pension and Disability Insurance Institute and Employment Service of Slovenia) in line with the National Statistics Act. The Office is the main producer and coordinator of carrying out the programmes of statistical surveys. It takes care of the statistical system, actively cooperates in the international environment, determines methodological and classification standards, anticipates user needs, and takes care of data collection, processing and dissemination, and of statistical confidentiality. In its work the Office respects the fundamental principles stipulated by the National Statistics Act, i.e.: Professional and institutional independence Statistical confidentiality Availability, accessibility and clarity of information International comparability Transparency of methodology Rational use of resources In addition to principles stipulated by the Act, in its work the Office respects other internationally recognised principles, such as those in the European Statistics Code of Practice, including: relevance of statistical concepts, accuracy, timeliness, punctuality, coherence, accessibility and clarity in disseminating results. Did you know? The Statistical Office is an independent Government office responsible directly to the Prime Minister. Its Director-General is appointed by the Government for a period of five years. Since 2003 the Office has been led by Ms Irena Križman. The Office’s mission is implemented by 360 employees, two thirds of them women. The average age of employees is 44 years. Almost half of employees have tertiary education. 9 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? DISSEMINATION OF STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC 10 STATISTICAL DATA DISSEMINATION The Office’s main activity is dissemination of statistical data and information, i.e. presenting deliberately and systematically collected data to the public. Dissemination of statistical data and information is implemented through a wide range of information channels: through publishing of various serial publications (printed and electronic), through interactive tools, through databases, through media (press conferences), through phone, telefax and e-mail, and through direct contact with the users (i.e. Information Centre, specialised library). The most important information channel for data publication is the website (www.stat.si/eng). The number of users of official statistics is increasing; therefore, we strive to make seeking and obtaining statistical data as simple, transparent and customised as possible. Users can access data and publications 24/7. Data are available free of charge, except those data that are prepared on users’ request. Almost all publications and data releases are bilingual (SloveneEnglish), or available in two language versions (Slovene and English). Besides data, the Office publishes in different types of publications (electronic and printed) and in databases also metadata (definitions, methodological explanations, etc.). Many data are presented with the help of interactive tools. HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? Frequently, the data are presented in simple tables, charts or thematic maps; in the majority of releases they are also commented. For research and analytical purposes the Office provides access to statistically protected microdata to registered research institutions, registered researchers and researchers in the public administration. When using our microdata these users are obliged to consider legal, ethical and professional statistical criteria. 11 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? Statistical data and information are always published at 10.30. All releases are announced at the Office’s website www.stat.si/ eng in the column Release dates. On the Office website www.stat.si/eng there is a link to free Eurostat data as well as access to websites of other statistical institutes of EU Member States. Monitoring of latest releases (today's and tomorrow's) and of announced releases for the current week and current month is enabled. Advance Release Calendar enables monitoring of announced releases of individual publications and dates of web releases. There is also a link to the Release calendar of national statistical institutes (EU). The Office clearly, understandably and transparently deals with data revisions and corrections of erroneously published data. Users are informed about all data revisions in the same way as about regular data releases. The Office is one of the 27 authorised providers of free user support in finding data on the Eurostat website. We offer user support in finding, using and understanding statistical data. During the office hours you can call us or visit us in our Information Centre. In addition to user support in finding statistical data and information, with clear, understandable and interesting releases and many interactive tools the Office strives to improve statistical literacy of its users. Two friends are talking. The first one says: ˝I have read that statistically speaking every fourth person in the world is a Chinese.˝ The second looks around: ˝Hm, strange! This is not apparent here.˝ 12 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? INTERACTIVE TOOLS Population clock The population clock shows the estimate of the current number of population in Slovenia and in the world. www.stat.si/eng/interaktivno.asp For more rapid, content-focused and user-friendly data access, the Office prepared several interactive tools that enable dynamic data inquiries. First names and family names of Slovenia’s population This interactive tool enables you to find out how common a name, family name or a name/family name combination is, how fashionable certain names were in different periods and which names and family names are characteristic of statistical regions in Slovenia. Population pyramid The population pyramid enables interactive graphic presentation of the age structure of the population through time by gender. Did you know? The most common family name in Slovenia is Novak, the most common name is Marija. Birthdays The tool enables you to make inquiries in the birthdays database. It helps you to find out how many people in Slovenia were born on a certain date or day. Inquiries are possible also by days, months or years alone. The interactive population pyramid enables the presentation of the age structure of Slovenia's population by gender from 1971 to 2061. Dynamic recalculations In addition to key indicators available on our website, you can find interesting tools for recalculation of monetary values, recalculation of inflation and recalculation of output price indices of the domestic market. 14 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? GEOSTATISTICS PORTAL www.stat.si/eng/geostatistike.asp With different interactive tools the geostatistics portal presents in one place selected regional statistics and indicators. The tools enable presentation of regional data and indicators in hierarchical grids, by statistical regions, municipalities and settlements. KASPeR – Mapping application of statistical data e-dimensions KASPeR is a web cartographic application. Users can browse statistical data by selected spatial units in combination with various maps from the Google Maps tool. The selected thematic map and spatial layer with data can be stored in shp format for using with GIS tools. Interactive statistical atlas of Slovenia The Interactive statistical atlas offers the possibility of browsing and printing statistical data by statistical regions and municipalities. A presentation for longer time series is enabled. The territorial level and the reference year can be selected. Slovene Municipalities in Figures After the 2009 printed version of Slovene Municipalities in Figures the Office prepared the electronic version with the latest data. This electronic publication presents differences and similarities among Slovene municipalities and their position in the country. Statistical data in this publication are updated annually, usually in June. GIS data – Database of georeferenced statistical data GIS data are georeferenced statistical data in vector format used for further processing with GIS tools. Data are presented in hierarchical grids, by settlements, municipalities, statistical and cohesion regions. Data in shp format cover selected population data. " Good ideas have no age, they only have a future." Robert Mallet 15 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? Thematic cartography Code lists of basic spatial units The pre-prepared thematic maps listed by fields of statistics show a variety of regional indicators. In addition to viewing the map on screen, a useful format for printing is also available. For most phenomena presented in the map tables with data in xls format are added. With spatial code lists users are informed in one place about basic spatial units (regions, municipalities, administrative units). Tables and maps show names and official codes of units. When the boundaries of spatial units do not match perfectly, relevant explanations are added. Place names The tool enables browsing of the database with the names of Slovenian settlements. The map shows the location of the selected settlement, how many settlements with the same name there are and where they are located. In the same manner browsing of streets is enabled. The most common settlement names in Slovenia are Gradišče and Pristava. The most common street name is Šolska ulica. Did you know? Slovenia is divided into two cohesion regions, 12 statistical regions, 58 administrative units, 211 municipalities and 6,031 settlements. (as of 1 January 2012) 16 SI-STAT DATA PORTAL pxweb.stat.si The data portal provides one-stop access to statistical data from different fields of statistics and different sources. HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? On the first page of the SI-STAT data portal the users select the desired field of statistics from which they want to obtain data, metadata or information. The portal offers different statistical products and links. Data in tables are available in PC-Axis format. Tables enable direct access to data via the web interface, selection of categories to view, storing in different formats and subscription for notification about updates. PRINTED PUBLICATIONS Statistical Yearbook Slovenia in Figures The Statistical Yearbook is the central and the most comprehensive regular annual serial publication of the Office. It is usually published in mid-December. Slovenia in Figures is a handy booklet containing all essential data on our country and is basically a small yearbook. It is published annually, usually at the end of September. It contains the widest set of statistical data and indicators collected for the previous year and also longer time series – data are mainly presented at the territorial level of Slovenia, and partly at lower territorial levels. For selected basic data international comparison is also enabled. The Yearbook also brings methodological explanations and statistical definitions for each field of statistics. It contains a basic presentation of data on our country, important data on Slovenian territory and climate, basic data on population, education, social security, important data on economy as well as a review by statistical regions and international comparisons. Brochures Rapid Reports Brochures belong among the popular and promotional Office’s publications and are due to many graphical presentations also more attractive for users. They are intended for the widest circle of users – the general and professional public. They deal with topical subjects and phenomena with the intention to support or encourage public discussion about them. This series is divided into as many subseries as there are fields of statistics. Subseries can have several content-related titles. The content relatedness of individual subseries is shown by the same colour in the title part of the publication. It is characteristic of brochures that brief, clear and understandable comments are intertwined with charts, tables and maps. For better understanding of the situation in Slovenia, European comparisons are often shown. Publications in this series mostly present annual results of statistical surveys. In addition to data and charts, each publication contains a comment, short methodological explanations, basic statistical definitions and the survey description. As of 1 April 2012 the series ceased to be printed; since then the publications are available in pdf format on Office’s website only. Our objective was that presentations included would be as interesting, understandable and clear as possible. Municipalities follow one another in alphabetical order. To each municipality one page is devoted. In tables municipalities are presented with the same set of data. For several years the Office has been disseminating regional statistics in various statistical publications. Every year (usually at the end of March) the publication Slovene Regions in Figures brings the latest available statistical data referring exclusively to twelve statistical and two cohesion regions. It shows which were the most common names of people on the first day of 2010, when they were the most popular and which were more widespread than others in different parts of the country. Improving health and health care of the population is one of the major priorities of Slovenia and the EU. The basis for any such strategy is good knowledge of the health status of the population. Following this aim the Office has, together with the Institute of Public Health, prepared a handy publication which describes the health situation in Slovenia and in the EU. According to World Health Organisation estimates about a million people die every year due to suicide and intentional self-harm. 34 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? Data and information on environment, energy and transport are combined in a statistical story. To effectively tackle environmental problems, an effective environmental policy is important. The basis for successful implementation of such a policy is comprehensive monitoring of the environment, collecting environmental data and reporting about its changes. Environmental indicators are due to their simplicity and the message they convey very useful as a tool for monitoring the situation and changes in the environment. Appropriately selected indicators based on time series which are long enough can show the key development trends, they help to describe the causes and effects of environmental conditions and to track and evaluate the implementation of environmental policies. For each objective key indicators that could measure the progress or indicate what is changing in the particular field were defined. The brochure brings the indicators that were calculated from the latest available data. Data mainly refer to 2008. Each indicator is presented in time series covering the last four years and a starting year in the past (1995, 2000, etc.). The first issue of this brochure was released in May 2010. At that time data were generally available for 2008. But the global financial crisis has affected the situation in the world as well as in Slovenia. Therefore, 2009 was in many ways different from the previous years. This was the reason why we released the second updated issue with newer data. To mark this anniversary a special publication was prepared. The publication presents a selection of events surrounding the development of national statistics in Slovenia and its cooperation with the international environment. On 19 August 1944 the Slovene National Liberation Council established the Statistical Office of Slovenia. The brochure was prepared on the occasion of the 20th Statistical Days conference. In it we wanted to evaluate the importance of statistical conferences for the official statistics in Slovenia. This was done in three ways: with an expert overview and a substantive analysis of conferences, with documents and with memories and impressions of some of the participants. 51 HOW TO OBTAIN STATISTICAL DATA AND INFORMATION? Površina naselij v polovici slovenskih občin je bila manjša od tega povprečja. Večja naselja so po večini značilna za večje občine z manjšim številom naselij; te občine imajo običajno razgiban relief in so redkeje poseljene. In 2010 the average area of settlements in Slovenia was 3.4 km2. The size of settlements was in a half of Slovenian municipalities below the average. Larger settlements are more typical for larger municipalities with a smaller number of settlements; these municipalities usually have rugged relief and are less densely populated. On average, municipalities with larger settlements (e.g. Jezersko) were up to ten times larger in size than an average settlement in Slovenia in 2010, while the smallest settlements (e.g. in Kostel) were up to three times smaller. Settlements in Slovenia are regarded as dispersed, which is expressed also in diverse arrangement of settlements throughout municipalities. While only 10 municipalities hade more than 100 settlements in 2010, 50 municipalities incorporated fewer than 10 settlements. As regards the number of settlements, the municipality Krško ranked first with 158 settlements and Trebnje second with 153 settlements. Municipalities Kobilje, Odranci and Trzin each had one settlement only. In 2010 Ljubljana was the only municipality in Slovenia with more than 1,000 streets; it comprised 15% of all streets in Slovenia and was far ahead of Maribor with 8.7% of streets in Slovenia. Only five other municipalities had more than 200 streets. The lowest number of streets (4) was registered in the municipality Sveti Jurij. As many as 64 municipalities were composed of settlements with no street systems. Did you know?
