President’s Piece
It was an honour to lay the rotary wreath at the war memorial last
Sunday, the "new" service worked well, the reading of the rolls of
honour never fails to affect all present.
I now look forward to the festive season beginning with the 28th
November switch on, I'm sure the club will support all events.

Club Service
The Membership recruitment evening went very well (thanks
once again to Phil) and it was great to see one of the ladies,
who attended, pay a second visit to the Club last Thursday
(12th).
At that meeting it was also a delight to be raided by Romney
Marsh Club, who as always were on great form.
We are also looking forward to our visit to the Railway
next week (19th) and the talk from the new General Manager.
It will be interesting to see what is said about one of
Tenterden's tourist jewels.
Thanks to Callum and Kelvin for making the arrangements.
December sees a shortened month due to the festive break,
but we finish the calendar year with the Christmas party, a
chance to let our hair down and have a bit of fun - more on
that nearer the time.

Tales from Waterside Oast
I am sure you all realized last month’s article was written in Cockney Rhyming Slang.
A cockney is a person born within the sound of Bow Bell’s. However, whilst it is mostly spoken in the east end
of London a variation can also be heard in south London.
True Cockney’s call these people, and others, (such as Jamie Oliver who was born in Essex) Muckneys.

Christmas Tree
A suitable tree has now been agreed with Hole Park and arrangements are in place for erecting the tree
on Saturday 28th November. The Christmas Tree Lights will be ceremonially switched on at
approximately 5pm by the Mayor after a short Church Service and a procession of Mayors to and from
the Church. We will be running our Mulled Wine Stand to support this event.
Mulled Wine
In addition to running the Mulled Wine Stand outside the Town Hall on Saturday 28th November to
support the Christmas Tree Lights Switch On, we will be running the Mulled Wine Stand in Sayers
Lane on Saturday 5th December and Saturday 19th December. Volunteers are required to support these
events please.
Street Collection
Volunteers are also sought for street collecting next to the Christmas Tree and at the top of Sayers Lane
on Saturday 5th December, Saturday 12th December, Friday 18th December, Saturday 19th December,
Monday 21st December, Tuesday 22nd December, Wednesday 23rd December, Thursday 24th
December.
Carol Service
Arrangements are being made with St Mildreds Church for the Carol Service to take place on
Wednesday 16th December. We will require ushers to support this event please.
Hi-Viz Tabards
Chris Milne is currently holding the Club's stock of Hi Viz Jackets in preparation for the Christmas
Actvities but a significant number are missing. Hence, if you have a Hi-Viz Tabard in your possession
then please return it to Chris.

Rotary Burns Night – Thursday 28th January 2016 – Little Silver Country Hotel
The Club Service Committee is hoping to arrange a traditional Burns’ Night dinner with haggis, roast beef
and a dessert, plus piper and master of ceremonies. The price for the evening would be £30 per person.
I do, however, need a commitment from sufficient members and guests for me to firm up the booking. I
should be grateful for an indication of numbers as soon as possible.
If the evening looks viable in terms of club numbers, the Club Service Committee plans to invite other local
Rotary clubs also. Colin

Rotary Global Swimarathon on Sunday 31st January 2016
Maidstone Rotary are counting the funds raised from their recent
Swimarathon and expect the total to be in the region of £10,000 –
from 24 teams.
Whilst we may not achieve either that amount of money or that
number of teams, the more that take part the more fun it is for
everyone as well as increasing the amount raised for various
charities - without a great deal of effort from the majority of the
Club.
So – please put in some effort at this stage and encourage as many
of your contacts amongst the local organisations, businesses,
schools to sign up to enter a team. (50% of each team’s
sponsorship goes to its nominated charity.)
Forms have been circulated electronically to all members and are
also available on the club website.
Chris Mason has done an excellent job in setting up an account
with BT Mydonate and Phil Auden has put a link to this on the
Club website. The Swimarathon has been listed as an event so
now any team/participant can set up their own fund-raising link to
this event. This enables participants to raise sponsorship on-line
as well as by the more traditional method of cash and a
sponsorship form.

My colleague in MAF, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Mt
Hagen, Papua New Guinea, has told me that he is still preparing
and selling the water filter buckets to which we made a small
contribution a couple of months ago. Our national staff are
reporting that they have lost all their garden vegetable crops to the
drought and everyone is being affected by the higher prices at the
market. MAF is flying food aid to some areas (having had to fly
fuel into different bases because the river was too low for the
barge to carry the fuel to a central depot) but there has now been
some rain in the Highlands. I’m flying out there this weekend so
will see the situation for myself – though I shan’t see my
colleague as part of the purpose of the trip is to cover for his
absence!

Charity Fund Raising
Continuing with the series on information concerning charity fund raising.
Snippet 7: there is an obligation to the public to demonstrate exactly what
a charitable collection is for and whether it is the proceeds or surplus
after expenses that will go to the chosen cause.
Snippet 8: once money has been collected from a charitable event there is an
obligation to the donors to disburse it in accordance with the publicised
information and not change our minds.

Rotary Christmas Card News.
Many thanks to those Rotarians who ordered the Rotary sponsored Christmas Cards.
This year thanks to those who are regular 'customers' and to two of our recent members the total value of the purchases
was £90. This is a higher total than before.
The profit on the cards purchased will go to The Rotary Foundation and will be credited as a contribution to Foundation by
the our club.
Only 12 Rotarians bought cards, well under 50% 0f the club. It would be encouraging if a few more decided to buy one of
two of the cards.
If you have comments on the cards available let me know, verbally or by email, and I will pass on the comments

Programme
September 2015
Please remember to pass any details of potential Speakers – or volunteer yourselves or loved ones if you are prepared to
entertain a small but appreciative audience.
If every Member arranged 1 talk per year, or introduced a Speaker, the Sarah’s job would be much easier ! Please
consider it.
Mike
I am now compiling an ideas list for 2016 to start approaching speakers. If you have any ideas, suggestions or
requests please let me know. I hope you are enjoying the variety of speakers thus far.
It has also been suggested that all members enter a pool to talk should a speaker be unavailable last minute.
Each member who agrees to go on the list may then be called upon to speak on a randomly selected
subject/phrase or memory for 5 minutes, and then another name is drawn. A board to sign up for this will be
circulated shortly.
