Welcome to UC Santa Cruz
Welcome and Congratulations! This is a very exciting time in your life as you
begin your new journey of learning. Every year students tell us that a key factor
to their success is getting involved on campus and making a difference in their
community. We expect you to take advantage of this week to learn as much as
possible about your new environment.
Fall Welcome Week has been planned for you to learn about academic resources,
to become familiar with the campus, and to learn about the Santa Cruz
community. Use this guide to learn about the many workshops & events taking
place on campus.
Notice that some events are MANDATORY. Your academic and social transition
to UC Santa Cruz is extremely important to us. We consider you a partner in
your academic and social success here at UCSC. Therefore we expect you to
actively participate in the many programs and services this first week and well
beyond. So, start now and begin making connections!

Tour the newly renovated McHenry Library. Attractions include the Global
Village Café, the Information Commons, group study rooms, and more. Or get
a tour of the Science & Engineering Library. You will learn about the library’s
services and collections, such as borrowing course textbooks, online research
databases, the Media Center and the video game room. Tours run approximately
30 minutes.
Drop-In Shot Clinic

Students may receive immunization shots for the following: Hepatitis B ($121
each-series of 3 required), meningitis ($146) , MMR ($87), tetanus/pertussis
(Tdap) ($77), HPV (Gardasil) ($150 each-series of 3 required), and Varicella
(Chicken Pox) ($128). All are 100% covered by the UC health insurance plan.
Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination for students younger than 19 years of age on
9/22/12 is the only vaccination required for enrollment. All others are highly
recommended by the CDC and the American College Health Association. To
take full advantage of this clinic, please have immunization records with you.

Are we on Campus or in a Forest? An Introduction to the Campus Natural
Reserve Lands

Interdisciplinary Sciences Building, Room 221
The UCSC Campus is unique within the University of California in that over
400 acres of the campus have been set aside as a Natural Reserve. These lands
are home to 1000’s of plants and animals including bobcat, deer, and the pacific
giant salamander. This event will discuss the animals and plants found on the
Campus Natural Reserve, highlight ways you can get involved in research and
educational activities at our Natural Reserves and the Natural History Museum,
learn about appropriate use of the reserve, and see some of the animals and
plants that occur on campus. For more information contact the Campus Reserve

all Cowell residents. All new Cowell students are welcome, even those who live

This make-up exam is available to incoming frosh who did not take the
systemwide exam in May 2012. A passing score (8 or above out of a possible
12) on the AWPE may be used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement
(ELWR) and a score of 10 will satisfy the C1 requirement. See “Make-Up

New International Student MANDATORY Visa Check-in Meetings; open to
ALL international Students

Classroom Unit 1
For all new F-1 and J-1 international students, attend only one. Information will
be presented to help you stay legally in the U.S. This includes information about
SEVIS registrations, immigration regulations, enrollment requirements, and
other related matters. International Student Advisers will also complete a final
review of your visa documents, so that your SEVIS record will be activated in
the government database. (Also available: Tuesday, 9/25 and Wednesday, 9/26.)

Were you involved in Leadership at your high school? Do you enjoy meeting
new people? Want to learn about the issues facing students today? Want to be a
part of a historic non-partisan voter registration effort? Are you ready to learn
how to organize and advocate real progressive change? Well just like high
school, UCSC has a leadership organization called the Student Union Assembly.
We’re the official voice of all undergraduate students. Come meet the elected
student body officers and find out how you can get involved in campus, local,
statewide, and national politics. Your officers hire other students for credit and
paid internships. Start your college experience off in the world of student power.

Transportation to and from the Boardwalk Frolic
5 - 10:30 pm
Free transportation with your student ID or temporary bus pass. At bus stops,
look for UCSC shuttles with special signs to go directly to the Boardwalk. Rides
open at 6: 30 but go early to avoid bus lines and enjoy the beach or wharf! Buses
drop off and pick up on Cliff St. in front of the arcade. Be sure to get a bus back
from here, don’t walk to the downtown bus station. Buses run until everyone has
a ride back to campus!
Boardwalk Frolic

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
Rides, dancing, and exclusive use of Neptune’s Kingdom
Arcade. With ticket, you get free parking, and special bus
transportation with UCSC ID. Free tickets for laser tag,
bowling, miniature golf, one return ride ticket and $3 in
Boardwalk Bucks for food! Tickets are $20 and are available at the Bay Tree
Bookstore. Rides open 6:30-9:30: Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Pirate’s Ship,
Merry-Go-Round, Rock & Roll, Sea Swings, Haunted Castle, Sky Glider,
Riptide, Cliff Hanger. Rides open 6:30-10: Double Shot, Bumper Cars.

The Fall Festival is a great opportunity to see how you can be active
and involved in student life at UCSC. Come visit the tables and talk to
representatives from student groups and organizations, recreation and sports
clubs, fraternities and sororities, health and wellness classes and services,
academic resource offices, environmental groups, student media, ethnic resource
centers, and more! UCSC Dining Services provides BBQ dinner on the field (all
dining halls will be closed); live music, student performances, a portable rockclimbing wall, and the best view of the Monterey Bay! This is a ZERO WASTE
event. All plates, utensils and food are composted. You are encouraged to bring
