Ottawa City Council in 2006 by a wide margin.
The veteran Councillor won praise as an effective Acting Mayor last year, leading Ottawa City
Council to approve an impressive number of policies and projects in a short period. Among
these, a downtown transit tunnel for east-west light rail, a plan Bellemare has been pushing
for years and ultimately became a successful alternative to the previous and controversial
north-south proposal. Two light rail stations will connect Beacon Hill-Cyrville to downtown.
As Acting Mayor, Bellemare made sure a $3 million expansion of the Splash Wave Pool in
Beacon Hill-Cyrville was funded by all levels of government.
Bellemare also initiated new recreation activities for youths and seniors, and successfully
completed a $2.5 million makeover of neighbourhood parks, with more improvements on the
way.
