William Shakespeare Birthplace ● ● William Shakespeare was born on 23rd April 1564 in Stratford upon Avon. Shakespeare's birthplace is a half-timbered house turned into a museum. Shakespeare's Family ● ● His father, John Shakespeare, was a merchant and a glove maker. The family had eight children, William was the third child and the oldest surviving son. ● The Shakespeare Coat of Arms Education ● ● Shakespeare was probably educated at King's New School, a grammar school in Stratford. The school was free and the students learnt Latin, grammar, literature etc. ● Stratford Grammar School Anne Hathaway ● ● At the age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was 26 at that time and pregnant with their daughter Susanna. Twins Judith and Hamnet were born two years later. Unfortunately, Shakespeare's only son Hamnet died at the age of 11. Lost Years ● The years between 1585 (the birth of the twins) and 1592 are called Shakespeare's lost years, because there are no historical traces about Shakespeare's life in that period. London ● By 1592, Shakespeare was well established as a playwright in London. ● Several of his plays were on the London stage. Lord Chamberlain's Men ● ● ● Lord Chamberlain's Men was a theatre company owned by a group of actors. Shakespeare was one of them. They performed his plays. The Globe Theatre ● ● ● In 1599, Lord Chamberlain's Men built their own theatre, called the Globe. It burnt down a few years later. In 1599 a replica was built. ● The Globe Theatre New Place ● ● In 1597, Shakespeare bought the second largest house in Stratford, called New Place. The house no longer exists and it was Shakespeare's last residence in Stratford. ● New Place, sketch by George Vertue, 1737 Plays ● ● Shakespeare wrote 36 plays: comedies, historical plays and tragedies. His most popular comedies are, for example The Merchant of Venice (Kupec benátský), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Sen noci svatojánské) or The Taming of the Shrew (Zkrocení zlé ženy). Plays ● ● His tragedies could be represented by Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear or Macbeth. The subjects of the poems are the Fair Youth, the Rival Poet and the Dark Lady. Death ● ● Shakespeare died in his hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon, on the 23rd April 1616.
