PROGRAM COMPONENTS
1. Tuition Support
 Annual scholarship to help cover tuition & fees at competitive colleges and universities.
2. Mentoring/Social Support
 Each Scholar is paired with a Red Pine Advisor who is his/her primary contact for this program.
 The role of the Advisor is to:
o Provide Scholars with support and helpful advice
o Facilitate problem solving and decision making (support students to access available
resources at their schools and in their communities)
o Provide access to a network of resources that will help Scholars to achieve the goals of
the program:
 Maintain strong academic performance
 Have meaningful summer experiences
 Build strong association as a Red Pine Scholar
 Advisors will proactively reach out to Scholars at least twice annually (beginning of each
semester), and more if desired. Scholars are expected to be in touch at least one more time per
semester or as often as necessary. This communication can be via email, phone, or in person if
possible.
3. Flex Fund
 Scholars who meet all program expectations can apply to the Flex Fund. Requirements include:
o GPA of 3.0 or above
o Consistent contact with Advisor
 The purpose of the Flex Fund is to:
o Help Scholars to take advantage of opportunities, in line with their academic goals, that
otherwise would be financially prohibitive
o Reward initiative and incentivize Scholar success
o Enhance the college experience
 Potential uses of the Flex Fund include:
o Academic expenses
o Travel to and from school
o Stipends for summer internships with non-profits
o Summer class tuition
o Additional costs associated with study abroad (e.g., flight)
o Other urgent financial needs
 Scholars should work directly with their Advisor to make requests to the Flex Fund. Advisors will
assess Scholars’ needs and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
 As a general guideline, qualifying students are eligible to receive up to $2,000 from the Flex
Fund annually.
 Payments CANNOT be made directly to students and CANNOT reimburse for expenses already
incurred. Payments must be paid directly to vendors.
 Please note: Any portion of the total grants and scholarships that exceed the cost of the
student's tuition, fees, books and supplies is considered taxable to the student.
Students should always talk with their Red Pine Advisor regarding any questions.
