Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society

What is Pi Gamma Mu?

Pi Gamma Mu is an international honor society that recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the social sciences. The honor society was founded in 1924 by Dean

Leroy Allen of Southwestern College in Kansas and Dean William A. Hamilton of the College of William and

Mary in Virginia. Today the honor society has chapters at 170 colleges and universities and has over 200,000 members.

Does SHS have a Pi Gamma Mu chapter?

Yes! Springfield College’s School of Human Services has established a chapter of Pi Gamma Mu. The purpose of the chapter is to recognize undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence in the social sciences, specifically in the field of human services. Each campus will hold an event, during the 2008-2009 academic year, to recognize new members of the honor society. Students should check with the Campus Director at their campus regarding detailed information on the recognition event.

What are the qualifications for membership?

Any student of good moral character may be elected to membership by a majority vote of Springfield College

School of Human Services’ chapter of Pi Gamma Mu by current members, with approval of faculty sponsors provided that:

 Undergraduate students have accumulated at least eighty-four (84) credits, including at least twelve (12) credits in social science courses and have a grade point average of at least a 3.90.

 Graduate students within the Organization Management and Leadership (OML) and the Community

Counseling Psychology (CCP) concentrations must have accumulated at least twenty-four (24) credits in social science courses and have a grade point average of at least a 3.90.

 Graduate students within the Mental Health Counseling (MHC) concentration must have accumulated at least forty-two (42) credits in social science courses and have a grade point average of at least a 3.90.

 Students are not eligible who have any academic failure in coursework within the disciplines described in the paragraph below.

 The present requirement of social science courses for both undergraduate and graduate students is defined to include studies in the disciplines of history, political science, sociology, anthropology, economics, international relations, criminal justice, social work, psychology, social philosophy, history of education, and human/cultural geography (all courses with prefixes of ADST, CJWB, CYDL, ECED, HUSB, SHSE,

MCCP, MGER, MMHC, and MOML).

Membership is contingent on fulfillment of all qualifications, submission of a membership application, a payment of a $40.00 lifetime membership fee, and continued support of and commitment to the goals and activities of the honor society chapter. What are the benefits of joining the Pi Gamma Mu honor society?

Members receive lifetime membership in both the Springfield College School of Human Services chapter and the national organization of Pi Gamma Mu. Members will receive a one-year subscription to the International

Social Science Review and the Pi Gamma Mu Newsletter , a membership card, a gold-plated key pin, and a certification of membership. Other benefits include invitations to regional meetings, triennial conventions, and the opportunity for graduate students to compete for scholarships. Honor cords are available for purchase at

$15.00 each. Students may choose to wear honor regalia (cords) during graduation ceremonies.

How is the SHS Pi Gamma Mu chapter governed?

Springfield College School of Human Services’ chapter of Pi Gamma Mu shall elect eleven student members to the Student Chapter Council (SCC), one from each of the campuses of the School. From among the eleven elected individuals, the campus representatives shall annually select a President, Vice President, and Secretary.

Two faculty members appointed by the Dean of the School shall oversee the society. Each SCC student member shall serve a two-year term, with one-half of the representatives elected each year. Elections for campus representatives and officer positions to SCC shall be held during the January term. Officers shall be elected by a simple majority, using a secret ballot system. The two faculty advisors, in conjunction with the

SCC, shall supervise and manage the business of Springfield College School of Human Services’ chapter of Pi

Gamma Mu.

IMPORTANT NOTES

If you are planning to hand in a portfolio:

To graduate in May, it must be in by January 1 st

To graduate in August, it must be in by May 1 st

To graduate in December, it must be in by September 1 st

If a student misses more than one class session, she/he must withdraw from the course or subsequently will be given an F for the course.

If a student is unable to attend a class session for any reason, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor.

Reminder

The deadline to adjust your summer 2009 schedule online is April 20, 2009.

After this date you will need to speak with your advisor and receive an add/drop or withdraw form.

Financial Aid

You must take at least six credits (undergrad) & five credits (grad) to receive any financial aid.

EARN COLLEGE CREDITS

FROM YOUR LIFE/WORK EXPERIENCES!

If your advisor recommends a course that you think you could write about (claim), do not take that class. Wait until you take HSPD and make an informed decision. For example, if you know a lot about computers, do not take a computer class.

What does ―experiential learning‖ mean?

―Experiential learning‖ is what you have learned from living your life, not from reading a book or sitting in a classroom. For example, if you are a parent, then you may have learned effective parent/child relationships. If you are a case manager, then you may have learned to do intakes and referrals.

How do I get credit for experiential learning?

You can earn credit by taking the Human Services Portfolio Development (HSPD) course. This course is usually necessary for five- and six- term students to complete the required 120 credits to graduate.

How does experiential learning benefit my college experience?

The experiential learning process saves you time and money. You are able to complete your undergraduate degree in a shorter time frame. Each three college credits that you are awarded saves you the tuition it would cost for taking that course.

How can I get the maximum benefit from the experiential learning option?

Keep track of your course of study with your advisor. Be sure to read the Quick Guide to Advising handbook to understand the advisor/advisee relationship. Make sure that you do not take any courses that you could write about (claim). For example, if you have experienced a loss you could write a claim for Coping with Disease and Death.

CHECKLIST FOR DEGREE CANDIDATES

All degree candidates must meet the following criteria for graduation:

General education requirements have been met

SHS required courses have been taken

Have a minimum of 48 residential credits

Residential credits actually taken at SHS. These are the credits that you pay SHS tuition for

Prior Learning credits and CLEP or DSST credits are NOT residential credits

Have 120 credits

No outstanding incomplete grades

If you have not met ALL the above criteria you may be disqualified from graduation.

Academic Honors

Undergraduate students whose final cumulative grade point average (GPA) is 3.50 or above and who have completed at least 45 graded semester hours (exclusive of pass/fail grades) at

Springfield College are awarded their degrees with honor according to the following criteria:

Summa Cum Laude : 3.90 to 4.00

Magna Cum Laude : 3.70 to 3.899

Cum Laude : 3.50 to 3.699

The qualifying cumulative GPA shall be determined at the close of the spring semester for May commencement and shall only include students who have completed all degree requirements.

Students eligible for academic honors will be recognized at the May commencement ceremony with honor cords. If you walk during commencement and have not completed the required 120 credits to graduate, you will not receive honor cords. To determine if you have made academic honors, please check your transcript via the Campus Web once final grades have been submitted and you have completed all requirements. You can pick up your honor cords at the Registrar’s check-in on the day of commencement. Academic honors shall be noted on diplomas and transcripts. The Dean’s List is published two times a year (January and June). The criteria for selection to the

The student must not have any incompletes or missing grades in the designated term.

The student must have a minimum semester grade average of 3.50 for the term.

If subsequent grade changes qualify a student for Dean’s List honors for a previous term, that designation will be reflected on the student’s transcript.

Book vouchers are available only to students that have money left over once their tuition is deducted .

 Book vouchers can only be used for educational supplies.

 Remember to check the expiration date on your book voucher.

 Remember that refund checks may be sent to you before your bookstore charges have appeared on your account. If that occurs, you are still responsible for paying those charges. Book vouchers can be mailed to your home or picked up in person, but will not be faxed .

The state of Massachusetts requires that you have health insurance coverage .

 Don’t forget to decline the Health Insurance charge as soon as possible, at least three days after your registration has been processed.

 This can be done online. You will need your health insurance card available.

 If you get charged for the insurance, you will not be eligible for a refund. Please direct any questions to the

Business Office.

You must complete paperwork to show proof of immunizations for the Health Center as soon as possible .

 As a courtesy we will forward your paperwork to the Health Center if you drop it off with us. You must still call the Health Center to make sure that the hold was released from your account. Not completing the paperwork can hold up your registration for the next term. Please direct any questions to The Health Center.

Your account must be paid in full, including posting of financial aid funds.

 Request two weeks in advance of the needed date.

 Letters are done on a first come/first serve basis.

 If your employer does not accept the college form, have them supply one for you and send it to the Business

Services Office. Once received it will be mailed or faxed to you within five business days.

 The federal financial aid guidelines require you to inform the Financial Aid Office of how much tuition reimbursement you will receive from your employer.

 A copy of this letter will be sent to you and the Financial Aid Office.

Access the payment center via your Springfield College webmail account :

 Students will receive an e-mail from the Business Office via their campus webmail account.

Access your webmail account through ―mySCweb‖ on the Springfield College homepage. Open the email titled ―You have a bill from Springfield College‖ and click on the link to view your bill.

Login using your Campus Web login information: student ID# (omit zeros) and password.

Access the payment center via the Springfield College website :

Taxes

April is a month when plants start growing, the weather turns warmer, and we can start looking forward to summer! We just need to get past March winds, spring showers, final papers, presentations and reports – and taxes.

While the Library cannot help you do your taxes (we are not lawyers or tax advisors), we can point you towards tax forms and places where you can get assistance.

For Federal taxes the place to start is the IRS’s website at http://www.irs.gov/. There, you will find any forms you need, answers to questions you may have, and some tools that may assist you in filing your taxes online for free. If you have a question about your taxes, or just need to get in touch with the IRS, follow the Contact IRS link at the top corner of the page.

For state taxes, start at your state’s tax website. The Massachusetts agency is the Department of Revenue located online at http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=dorhomepage&L=1&L0=Home

Note : If you cannot access your Webmail account at your personal computer (PC)

at home, or at another PC that you use, complete the steps on a PC at your

SHS Campus. If you still cannot access your account, notify the SHS Tech Help

After you have created your password, click the Submit button .

Go back to the Springfield College home page and wait about 10 to 15 minutes . Then follow the steps below in Phase 2 .

You may have several messages sent to you from Springfield College departments that all persons at Springfield College receive. Read through the messages and print important notices before you delete them.

PHASE 1 – Obtain Your Campus Web Login Credentials

Instructions for New Students

1. Activate your Springfield College Webmail account by following all the instructions in the handout called: “Webmail Activation Process.”

2. Access your Springfield College Webmail inbox and look for a document from admincomputing with the subject: “Welcome to Campus Web.”

If you see this document, continue with Step 3 . If you do not see this document, skip to Step 4 .

3. After you receive our “Welcome to Campus Web” email, open it and you will see that it contains your ID number and temporary password. It is best to print the document and store it in a safe place for future reference.

Continue with Phase 2 below.

4. Follow these steps if you did not receive a “Welcome to Campus Web” email notice.

Send an email containing the following information to admincomputing@spfldcol.edu

 Your Springfield College 9-digit ID number

 Your full name, date of birth, current address and phone number

 Your Springfield College Webmail address

NOTE: For your protection and the College ’s , if information is missing or can not be verified,

admincomputing will not create your Campus Web account.

Continue with Phase 2 below.

PHASE 2 – Accessing Your Campus Web Account For the First Time

Instructions

1. Go to http://www.spfldcol.edu and click the mySCweb link at the top right of the screen under

“Information for:.” Then, click the “ Enter Campus Web ” link to display the login form.

2. Enter your SC ID number (with or without the leading zeros) as the username and your temporary password in the boxes shown. Then click the Login button to display the Change

Password form.

3. Follow the instructions to create a new password. If you wish, you may use your Springfield

College Webmail account password.

4. After you see the message that says your password was successfully changed, click the

“ continue here ” link below the message .

5. Click the “ My Grades ” tab to see your grades, or click another tab such as “My Schedule” to view additional information. Don’t forget to logo ut when you are done.

**IMPORTANT NOTE** You will not be able to access Manhattan if your instructor has not been setup for a classroom. Check your syllabi first to determine if you will need to use Manhattan.

To access Manhattan, you will need to know your SC ID number. It is a nine-digit number. If you do not know your SC ID number, get it from Admissions personnel at your Campus. http://www.spfldcol.edu/

Access the Springfield College website from any PC that has active Internet access.

Click the mySCweb link that appears at the top right of the Springfield College home page under ―Information for.‖

Click the ― Enter Manhattan ‖ link.

On the next screen in the ― SHS Campus ‖ login field, enter your initials in lower case and the last 4 digits of your 9-digit SC ID number as your username. Do not consider the number after the dash. Your username will never change. Then enter the same thing as your password. If you enter it correctly, the next screen will prompt you to change your password. If this does not work for you after three tries, contact any one of your

Manhattan instructors or the SHS Tech Help contact person at your campus. Ask them to reset your password so that you can start over and create a new password.

On the next screen, enter the same password one more time on the first row, then enter a new password in lower case on t he second and third rows and click ― Change My

Password.‖

As long as you remember your password, you can keep it for your entire stay at SHS. If you forget it, ask your instructor to reset it back to its original format, which is your initials and last 4 digits of your SC ID number, so that you can re-create another password.

The next screen will list your Manhattan courses. To access a course, click the course title highlighted in blue.
