Physics 198 (Physics & Mathematics Review) Syllabus, Fall 2013 Instructor: Branton J. Campbell, N261 ESC, 422-5758, branton_campbell@byu.edu Course Description: Review of mathematics and introductory physics for returning missionaries and others returning after a significant break. The focus will be the introductory physics from Physics 121. Because math is the language of physics, we will also review the required math as needed. Learning Outcomes: Recall and apply the fundamental mathematical concepts and techniques up to the level of differential and beginning integral calculus that are necessary for Physics 121. Recall and apply fundamental physics concepts at the level of Physics 121. Prerequisites: Phscs 121 or equivalent. Math 113 or concurrent enrollment. Times/Locations: We meet for two hours each Tuesday (9:00-11:00 AM) in C285 ESC during the first block of Fall semester. See the class schedule below. Textbook: Physics for Science and Engineers, by Serway (7th-9th editions are all acceptable). You will also need an iClicker (available in the BYU bookstore) to participate in in-class quizzes. Reading Assignments: You will be expected to read the assigned chapters before each class. Lectures: Each week, we will first review basic concepts, and then practice applying them to both simple and complex problems. Homework: There will be a homework assignment given at the end of each class period, which will be due at the beginning of the next class period. Exams: We will have an in-class final exam during the last class period (see schedule below). Grades: An overall Pass/Fail grade will be determined based your homework grades, classroom participation and final exam score. Students come to the university not only to improve their minds, gain knowledge, and develop skills that will assist them in their life's work, but also to build character. President David O.
