Remember that the council is offering a pre-paid WSPTA convention registration to the local unit that has the most members attend the council meetings through March. We have collected $6230 in donations since the start of the school year. LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED Thank you to everyone who participated in the Legislative Assembly scholarship drawing as announced in last week’s Leadership News. We had 15 entries. The following local units won the lottery for two registrations: • Shoreline Special Needs PTSA 6.12.215 • • Totem Middle School 9.4.92 Rainier Beach PTSA 6.15.490 • Eastside Homeschool PTSA 2.3.40 BRONZE MEMBERSHIP AWARD WINNERS Congratulations to all the local units that won a bronze membership award by enrolling 50% of last year’s membership total by September 30. The WSPTA has 547 local units receiving this distinction this year, which is the most the WSPTA has seen since 2010-11 when the award was started! PROPOSED BYLAW AMMENDMENTS Proposed bylaw amendments, due November 1, 2013, form is available here. OCTOBER ISSUE OF WSPTA’S THE CHILD ADVOCATE NOW AVAILABLE The October 2013 issue focuses on effective family engagement in raising successful students. As always, feel free to cut and paste articles or portions of articles as handouts at PTA events or to reprint in PTA newsletters. To read this month’s issue, click here. STATE PTA OFFICER RECOMMENDATIONS State PTA Officer Nominations are due on November 8, 2013. The form is available here. Delegates to the 2014 WSPTA Convention will elect the following WSPTA officers: Secretary, Finance Officer, Leadership Director, Program Director and Outreach Director. In addition, three at-large members of the nominating committee will be selected at the 2014 convention. Please review the eligibility requirements listed on the recommendation form for each of the positions. PROGRAMS UPDATE Applegate Grant: Does your PTA have a special project it needs a little extra help funding? Is your PTSA trying to purchase some supplies that will benefit the whole school? The Applegate Grant is to provide opportunities to supplement funding. Everyone is welcome to apply. Please note that the deadline for submission is November 1st APPLEGATE GRANT APPLICATION Does your PTA follow Best Practices? Best Practices Checklist If so, then you are already meeting most of the requirements for Standards of Excellence. If your PTA has submitted for the Standards of Excellence Award in the past, take a look at the new award form. There have been substantial changes made to improve the application process (application & judging form are all-in-one). If your PTA has never submitted for this award, download the form today. It’s a great opportunity to show your membership all the great things you are doing. 2013-2014 Local Unit Standards of Excellence Award application ADVOCACY UPDATE AND SURVEY RESULTS Legislative Assembly: Legislative Assembly is Oct 18-19, 2013. This event is an important opportunity for your membership to have a voice in choosing the issues WA State PTA will adopt as its legislative priorities. Make sure the interests of your membership are represented. Having your PTA leaders attend is not only good for your membership it is recognized in the WSPTA Standards of Excellence Award and WSPTA Honor Unit Award. Legislative Assembly registration To view legislative survey results EVERETT SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE FORUMS The Everett PTSA Council is hosting two Everett School Board Candidate Forums. The purpose of these forums is to provide the candidates an opportunity to publicly address important issues that affect our students, our schools, and our community. The forums will also allow voters an opportunity to become better informed about their choices for elected officials. Candidates will be given an opportunity for opening and closing statements, as well as equal time to respond to questions. The forums will be moderated by Frank Ordway, Government Relations Director for the League of Education Voters. You can now integrate your 'planner' with teacher assignment calendars (really helpful if you have students at different schools)! IRS/CORPORATION RENEWAL REMINDERS Your IRS Form 990 is due on November 15, 2013, this is a receive date not a postmark date. If your average income is under $50,000, you will complete the IRS Form 990-N (e-postcard). If your average income is over $50,000 but under $200,000, you will complete the IRS Form 990-EZ. If your average income is over $200,000, you will complete out the IRS Form 990. Was your PTA Incorporated in October? If so, then your annual Corporation Renewal is due on 10/30/13, the annual corporation is due regardless of the income you bring in and is separate from the Charitable Organization Registration/ Renewal (due on May, 31, 2014.)
