The University of Western Ontario in

and applications for the position of Dean
of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
One of Canada’s top ten researchintensive universities, Western is a
diverse and collaborative community of
nationally and internationally celebrated
scholars. Through its twelve Faculties/
Schools and three Affiliated University
Colleges, Western offers approximately
400 undergraduate, graduate and
professional program specializations,
including innovative modular degree
structures that combine multiple
disciplines. Founded in 1878, Western
today has grown to include approximately
5,000 full-time faculty and staff, 35,000
full-time students, and 260,000
alumni in 130 countries. For additional

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is
at the core of the University. Teaching
and research span the vital elements
of the human experience. The Faculty
encompasses
the
Departments
of Classical Studies, English, Film
Studies, French Studies, Modern
Languages and Literatures, Philosophy,
Visual Arts, and Women’s Studies and
Feminist Research, and two programs:
Linguistics, and Writing, Rhetoric, and
Professional Communication. Western
is known for providing the highest
quality of undergraduate and graduate
education in the arts and humanities,
with an extremely vigorous curriculum
across the disciplines. The Faculty has a
strong commitment to interdisciplinarity
and a significant profile of scholarly
accomplishment. The Faculty is relatively
small - approximately 1,300 students
(undergraduates and graduate students)
with a student-to-faculty ratio of 10.5 to 1.

Candidates for Dean should possess both
a strong record of research and scholarly
achievement in areas relevant to the
academic mission of the Faculty, and a
record of achievement in administration
that demonstrates the ability both to
balance fairly the demands of a multidepartmental Faculty and to capitalize on
opportunities for synergy. A commitment
to interdisciplinary scholarship and to
the value of research in and across the
multiple areas represented in the Faculty
is essential. This challenging position
demands superb interpersonal skills and
sound judgment to provide leadership
for the continuing development of the
academic programs, research, and
creative life within the Faculty and within
the University. Financial acumen and
fundraising capabilities are also essential.
