It spent $763 million on social gaming specialist Playdom in 2011 as part of a gambit to tap the popularity of online gaming communities to help it diversify beyond console-based games. Despite its invesments in new games, including a major title for Nintendo's Wii platform, Epic Mickey (launched in 2010), Disney Interactive is struggling to correct its money-losing trajectory. While the division was counting on brisk sales of Epic Mickey to give it a much needed shot in the arm in terms of revenue, widespread adoption of the game may be limited by the fact that it is only available for the Wii. In a 2011 move to refocus on core products, the division closed down its Canada-based Propaganda Games studio, which developed Turok (2008), Tron: Evolution (2010), and the cancelled action-roleplaying game Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned. Further efforts to restructure the business and cut costs included layoffs that year. Disney Interactives titles are sold in more than 30 countries worldwide, and the company has offices in more than 10 countries. It also licenses properties for games, such as Cars, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille to third-party publishers, and has a licensing agreement with THQ, Inc. that includes an upcoming Pixar title. So far, Disney Interactive hasn't published any games based on properties from ABC-branded television shows. The other company that makes up the Interactive Media Group is Disney Online, which publishes the Web properties Disney.com and DisneyFamily.com. 866-541-3770 • HOOVERS.COM May 24, 2012 • PAGE 4 Historical Events Date Event Details 2007-02-08 Name Change The company changed its name from Buena Vista Games, Inc. to Disney Interactive Studios. 866-541-3770 • HOOVERS.COM May 24, 2012 • PAGE 5
