Definitions: Briefly define the following terms:
1. chunked text – break webpage text into small sections
2. primary colors – red, yellow, blue

6. complementary colors – those directly opposite on the color wheel

8. Bandwidth – quantity of data transmitted in a specific time frame, measured in bits per second
9. monitor resolution – measure of a display device’s sharpness and clarity
10. pixel – picture element; a single point in an electronic image
11. liquid layout – webpages that resize as the browser window resizes for any monitor resolution
12. copyright – ownership right to an image
13. encryption – process that encodes data into illegible content
14. decryption – remove the encryption and return data to its original form
15. SSL – Secure Socket Layer – protocol safeguards and encrypts information over the internet
16. Cookies – small text files stored on a visitor’s hard drive

1. List and describe four advantages of web publishing.
Currency – ability to quickly and inexpensively update webpages.
Connectivity – ability to instantaneously distribute and share content.
Interactivity – allows for data and resource sharing
Delivery – enables fast and inexpensive distribution of published information over the Internet.
2. What are several components that contribute to a company’s “brand”?
Branding specifications – color, images, and text applied to all of the entity’s media
Tag line – concise statement that a consumer readily associates with a business
3. List and describe three guidelines for effective writing for the web.
Accuracy and Currency – must be accurate and information current
Scannability – visitors prefer to quickly scan a webpage; use small sections to cover a topic
Organization – using te inverted pyramid style to provide summary, details, then background info.
4. Why should you avoid underlining text in a web page? What can you do instead of underlining to
emphasize text on a web page?
Visitors will most likely think it is a link. You could bold or capitalize the word or text.
5. What is the “web-safe palette” and how many colors are in it?

Colors that are recognized universally by all browsers and systems. There are 216 colors in the palette.
6. Go to WIKIPEDIA (English) and look up Web Colors to answer these questions about the hex triplet color
numbering system.
1. What is the hex triplet color system? a six-digit, three-byte hexadecimal number used in HTML, CSS,
SVG, and other computing applications, to represent colors. The bytes represent the red, green and blue
components of the color.
2. How is the hex triplet formed (describe each byte)? One byte represents a number in the range 00 to FF.
The decimal numbers 36, 104 and 160 are equivalent to the hexadecimal numbers 24, 68 and A0
respectively and when put together make #2468a0.
3. What is the 6-digit hexadecimal number for black? #000000
4. What is the 6-digit hexadecimal number for white? #ffffff
5. What is the 6-digit hexadecimal number for a dark green? #006400
6. What is the 6-digit hexadecimal number for a light green? #90ee90
7. What is the 6-digit hexadecimal number for a medium shade of gray? #808080

events, achievements and people. Their colors are a common representation of the intended
celebration.
b. Look through some of the Google Doodles, then enter your birthday in the search box to see any
doodles that appeared on your birthday. Save the doodle you liked best, then insert it here (if there are no
doodles for your birthday, find a doodle you particularly liked).

8. What are some legal issues involved in web publishing?
Copyright ownership of images/content could lead to penalties and prosecution if used on a page
without permission.
9. What are some privacy issues involved in web publishing?
Collecting SSN, credit cards, names, addresses, and other personal information needs to be kept private
and encrypted.
10. What are some accessibility and usability issues involved in web publishing?
People have various types of special needs such as lost or impaired vision or color blindness.
