EDITION 7: JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014
The Barrie Public Library is one of the busiest spots in our city, with
over 3,000 people a day coming through our doors. Patrons visit us
to check out leisure reading materials, participate in programs, use
library services, for help with homework, and more!
For every person who loves libraries, there is a story about what
the library means to them. Here is where we want to collect and
share those stories. We’re introducing our “My BPL Story!”.
If the Barrie Public Library has touched your life in a meaningful
way, please take a moment to let us know about it.

Join us for the following films from the
National Film Board:
Buying Sex by Teresa McInnes &
Kent Nason 2013 1 h 15 min 17 s
Timely and wise, this feature
documentary explores the state of
prostitution laws in Canada. Buying
Sex captures the complexity of the
issue by listening to the frequently
conflicting voices of sex workers,
policy-makers, lawyers and even the
male buyers who make their claim for
why prostitution is good for society.
Examining the realities in Sweden
and New Zealand, and respecting the
differences of ideology as Canada
works its way toward an uneasy
consensus, the film challenges us
to think for ourselves and offers a
gripping and invaluable account of
just what is at stake for all of us.
Warning: This film deals with mature
subject matter. Viewer discretion is
advised.
Mary & Myself by Sam Decoste 2013
6 min 56 s
This short animated documentary
tells the story of 2 Chinese Canadian
women making their theatrical debut
playing “comfort women” in Eve
Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. Jia
Tsu Thompson and Mary Mohammed
spend long hours rehearsing at Mu
Lan Teahouse in Halifax, where they
read their lines over and over, sip tea,
and recount buried stories of war.
As they diligently practice together
and at home, they come to have
their own personal catharses. Fusing
activism and performance, the film
honours the thousands of girls and
women from Korea, China, Japan
and the Philippines who were forced
into sexual slavery—into providing
“comfort” to soldiers in the Imperial
Japanese military during the 1930s
and ’40s.
