Taking Off the Mask at Georgian ~ Barrie Campus ~ November 2014
Monday Nov 17
Masks:
Many of us “put on a mask” in an
effort to put our best face forward
while hiding our true emotions,
thoughts and negative past
experiences.
View a moving video, produce your
own mask and observe the masks
that others admit to wearing, in
this stigma smashing cross campus
event. Stop and chat with peer
mentors, other students and staff
as you experience taking off your
mask.
Photo Booth:
Take a moment to capture your
mask making skills for a great
keepsake!
Therapy Dogs:
Make your day a little less stressful
with the support of the St John’s
Ambulance Therapy Dogs. Take a
moment to enjoy these
companions around the campus.
SafeTALK:
An excellent first step in providing
assistance to someone at risk of
self-harm or suicide.
TALK – Tell, Ask, Listen and
KeepSafe.
Tuesday Nov 18
Opening Ceremonies: Orillia
Campus
Join Georgian College
administration and special guests
at the official launch to Mental
Health and Wellness Week.
Students and an alumnus share
their lived experience of recovery.
Psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Ozersky from
FeelingBetterNow will also join the
discussion about mental health on
campus.
Yoga:
Join Michele McConney, Manager,
Athletics and Fitness for a stress
busting yoga session.
STACD:
Start talking about your struggles;
promote coping strategies for
stress; develop skills and resources
to avoid illicit and prescription
drugs.
Drink Smart:
DrinkSmart has connected with
campuses across Ontario, to
promote responsible drinking to
college and university students.
Wednesday Nov 19
I am a Kind Man:
Join Craig Brochmann, Program
Facilitator, Enaahtig Healing Lodge
and Learning Centre as he talks
about the I am a Kind Man program.
Men and women who want to learn
about this unique program that
impacts partners, families, friends,
and communities are welcome to
attend.
Mental Health from an Aboriginal
Perspective:
John Rice, Aboriginal Services
Counsellor, Canadian Mental Health
Association talks about traditional
Aboriginal teachings in relation to
health and well-being. He will speak
about the spirit’s journey through
this physical realm and the minds’
adjustments to physiological and
experiential events.
Appy Hour:
Health apps; organizing apps; apps
to help reduce stress, stabilize
mood, improve nutrition and
increase fitness. Come over and take
them for a test drive!
Thursday Nov 20
Considering Your Bucket List:
Is it some exotic vacation spot or
engaging in an extreme sport?
Maybe it’s picking up a hobby such
as golf, tennis, cooking, art lessons
or learning another language? It’s
never too early or too late to realize
your desires!
Please share your ideas in the
catwalk area between buildings C &
E (just past the cafeteria).
Caregiver Wellness:
Presented by Hospice Simcoe
My Wellness:
Here at Georgian College, we have a
central resource providing all
students (international included)
access to mental health and
wellness information, which is
broken down into three categories on campus, in the community, and
online.
