This list contains Russian words with their English
translations. The words included here are those that
you are likely to find in genealogical sources. If the
word (or some form of it) that you are looking for is
not on this list, please consult a Russian-English
dictionary. (See the "Additional Resources" section
below.)
Russian is a Slavic language. The Slavic languages
are divided into three groups. Russian, Belorussian,
and Ukrainian are East Slavic languages. The West
Slavic languages are Polish. Czech, and Slovak. The
South Slavic languages include Bulgarian, SerboCroatian, Slovenian, and Macedonian.
Russian is the language of the Russian Republic, and
was the official language of the Soviet Union. It was
also used in official recordsin parts of Poland,
Finland, and Alaska.
LA.'iGU'AGE CHARACTERISTICS
Variant Forms of Words
In Russian, the endings of most words vary
according to how the words are used in a sentence.
Who- whose-whom, or marry-marries-married
are examples of words in English with variant forms.
This word list gives the most commonly seen forms
of each Russian word. As vou read Russian records,
be aware that almost all words vary with usage.
Gender. Russian words for persons, places, and
things (nouns) are classified as masculine, feminine,
or neuter. For example, 6paT (brother) is a
masculine word, ~Oq}) (daughter) is a feminine
word, and cBH~eTe.n!lCTBO (certificate) is a neuter
word.
Words that describe persons, places, or things
(adjectives) will have either masculine, feminine, or
neuter endings. For example, in Russian you would
write CTap&lit 6paT (old brother), crapas ~Oq})
(old daughter), and crapoe CB~eTe.n~O (old
certificate).
This list gives only the masculine form of Gdjectives.
For example:
CTapbdt, crapas, crapoe (old) is listed only as
crapsra,
rayxoa, rnyxaa (deaf) is listed only as rJIyxoA.
Plurals. Plural forms of Russian words usually end
in bI, II, a, or g. Thus xeHa (wife) becomes
xeHbI (wives), EHHra (book) becomes EHBrH
(books), Mecro (place) becomes MeCTa (places) and
(remark) becomes 3aMeqa}{HJ{
(remarks). However, these same endings may also
indicate other grammatical changes besides plurality.

Gr:unmaticall'se. The endings of Russian words
can also vary depending on the grammatical useof
the words. Russian grammar requires a specific type
of ending for a word used as the subject of the
sentence, used in the possessive, used as the object of
a verb, or used with a preposition. Russian words
fall into several classes. each with its own set of
grammatical endings.

same ending as the word in your Russian document,
find a similar ending in the examples below to see
how the word in your document is used:

Spelling
In 1918 the Russian Academy of Sciences made some
changes to official spelling rules (orthography). This
word list, as well as most available Russian language
references, are written according to these new rules.
On the other hand, most of the documents you read
in your genealogical research are written according to
the spelling rules used before 1911. The spelling
changes you will be most likely to see include:

Russian dictionaries, indexes, and this word list use
the following alphabetical order. The first two
columns show the upper and lower case letter as it
appears in printed material; the second and third
columns show the upper and lower case letter much
as it appears in handwritten material; and the fifth
column shows the letter as it is usually written when
a name containing that letter is "transliterated.. into
the English alphabet.
