Summer 2011 at 118th Commencement There was a nervous excitement in the air as columns of red and white filed into the auditorium. No one looked more proud than Superintendent Dr. Kishore Kuncham and Principal Ernest Kight as they led the processional of graduates to their seats. This year’s class won accolades in academics, on the field and in the arts. Class President Kiana Burra-Anderson spoke about the events that make high school so memorable. Valedictorian Kayla Cruz and Salutatorian Rachel Lalmansingh also addressed their classmates. Kayla humbly stated, “It is the highest honor to be standing here representing us all.” Rachel told her classmates, “Our experience at Freeport High School was priceless.” Dr. Kuncham advised the students to “be fearless.” He reminded them that everyone comes into life the same way. “We have all come into the world with nothing and, when we leave, we do not take anything with us,” said Kuncham. “You have nothing to lose, so think big, don’t be afraid.” He congratulated the Class of 2011 and counseled the graduates to “find your dream and follow it from your heart, for it’s the only path that leads to true happiness.” The message given by Mr. Kight was one of encouragement. “This road you are on was made only for you. Stay strong and keep your head held high…don’t let life bring you down.” Board President Debra McQuillan, who had the honor of presenting the graduates with their diplomas, shared her personal philosophy. “The power of choice lies with you. Life is ten percent what happens to you, but ninety percent of what happens in your life comes from the choices you make.” She implored the graduates to make thoughtful, careful choices. After Mr. Kight formally certified the seniors as graduates and told them to move their tassels from right to left, cheers went up along with their caps. The newly minted alumni of FHS jubilantly filed out with handshakes and hugs to begin the next chapter of their lives. Freeport Public Schools 235 N. Ocean Avenue Freeport, NY 11520 Nonprofit Org. KISHORE KUNCHAM As the school year ends and we close another chapter in the history of the Freeport Public Schools, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride. I am honored to be your Superintendent of Schools and I am truly grateful for the commitment our community has demonstrated, through its support of our school budget, to providing our children with a quality education. While we continue to face challenges, our students have shown that their dedication to success is unwavering. Whether in the classroom, on the field or on the stage, we are moving forward. I am confident our students will continue to excel as they develop into lifelong learners and achievers. Success does not happen by accident or come without challenges. It is achieved through the efforts of many people working together toward a common goal. As your Superintendent of Schools, I feel very privileged to work with a dedicated Board of Education and a professional, caring staff whose number one priority is to provide a quality and nurturing learning environment designed for success. Together with our community, our mutual goal continues to be to provide all children in Freeport with the best education possible. Our children deserve nothing less. What we plan to do: $5 million from the Qualified School Construction Program (Less than $9 per year for the average household) • Columbus Avenue School – Upgrade public address system; upgrade multiple and single use toilets • Archer Street School – ADA elevator; upgrade security cameras and exterior lights; cafeteria HVAC • Bayview Avenue School – Classrooms sink and counter replacement; auditorium HVAC; upgrade multiple and single use toilets • Leo F. Giblyn School – Upgrade multiple and single use toilets; upgrade security cameras and exterior lights; cafeteria HVAC; upgrade playground; asbestos abatement • New Visions School – Playground expansion; upgrade wireless infrastructure; enhance window shades in the gymnasium • Caroline G. Atkinson School – Upgrade multiple and single use toilets; upgrade security cameras and exterior lights; sidewalk repair and replacement; repave parking lot and bus circle • J. W. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kishore Kuncham recently announced that Freeport Public Schools has an opportunity to borrow $5 million under special legislation. The section is known as the Qualified School Construction Program (QSCP). Qualified School Construction Bonds are administered by the state and provide state and local governments, including school districts, with interest-free financing for much-needed public school improvements. “This program provides a wonderful opportunity for our District to address muchneeded capital construction work while saving $1 million for taxpayers,” stated Board of Education President Debra McQuillan. Freeport Public Schools’ registered voters will be asked to vote on one resolution that includes both the Proposed Bond and the use of $1.9 million from Capital Reserve Funds to install a synthetic turf field with lighting and markings for •3• multiple sports at the high school. This synthetic turf field project will result in no additional costs to taxpayers because the funds have already been set aside. Items addressed in the proposed bond include security and safety upgrades, multiple and single use toilet upgrades, floor tile replacements, lighting, playground upgrades as needed, and window and ceiling replacements, among others. When compared to financing $5 million of highpriority instructional related capital projects through a normal bond at 4% annual interest, the District will save approximately $1 million in bond payments. The annual impact of this bond on the average homeowner will be less than $9 per year. For more in-depth details of both the Proposed Bond and the Capital Reserve Fund Project, please visit the District’s website at www.freeportschools.org. Updated information will be posted regularly, so be sure to visit the website often. Remember to save the date Tuesday, September 20, 2011 and vote. SUMMER 2011 FHS Gates Scholarship Winner “Those who are willing to face the music may some day lead the band.” When you speak with Dominique McLaughlin, you see that she is focused, poised and articulate and has her goals in place. Winning the Gates Scholarship wasn’t an easy process; Dominique had to write eight different essays. “[The process and the topics] helped me discover who I was,” she said. “I found the inner me. I realized you go through things in life and then you really can accomplish.” The Gates Foundation is comprised of very astute people. The essays required by the Foundation give judges the insight needed to assess the applicants and reward students like Dominique for turning their lives around. When you read all that she has accomplished - such as National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Orchestra, volunteer work in the community, and a job as an assistant to a lawyer, you have to ask what she means by “turning her life around.” She is willing and open to talk about her early troubles in high school. Dominique explained how she started her freshman year on the “wrong track.”“I was hanging out with the wrong people and even got suspended. Then one of my so-called friends stole something from me, and I realized they weren’t my friends.” After taking a long, hard look at the direction in which she was headed, she decided to turn herself around. She credits Mr. Nelson Holland, Freeport High School Assistant Principal, with helping her. “I have younger sisters and I didn’t want them to take the wrong path, so I had to straighten out. “ To her credit, Dominique ranked sixth in the graduating class with a weighted average of 101.34. She began school in Freeport in pre-K at Columbus Avenue School and went on to Bayview Avenue School, Dodd Middle School and finally Freeport High School. She has chosen to pursue a career in nursing as a nurse anesthetist and will use her scholarship towards attending New York University. “I want to help people and give back,” she said. We are sure she will.
