PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Brothers & Sisters;
Our Annual Mass and Brunch held on February 7, 2010 was a beautiful
uplifting and spiritual day. It was a festive celebration of Fr. John’s birthday
and a fitting tribute to our departed members. Thank you to Fr. Richard,
Fr. Joseph and Fr. Mario from the Immaculate Conception Monastery for
celebrating the Mass and to Nick Papallo for making the Mass preparations.
The children and grandchildren of Dora Manna were honored to light the
candle for the memorial ceremony during the Mass.

Anastastia and Alexandra Ambrosio did a beautiful job with the Mass
music. Anastasia played the Cello and Alexandra was the Cantor. Together
they added a special quality to our celebration of the Eucharist. Also,
thank you to the Ambrosio family for helping to set up the chapel the night
before the Mass.
After Mass, we had a delicious brunch and enjoyed entertainment provided
by violinist, James Graseck. Thank you to Camille and Rick Annichiarico
and Nick Papallo for preparing such an enjoyable day for our members
and guests.

ANDIAMO AL CINEMA
Join us on March 22nd for Ciao Professore. It is an
unforgettable, candid story of children growing up in a poor and
harsh environment in the southern Italian town, Corzano. Their
bleak situation presents a serious challenge for the new teacher from the north, Marco Sperelli (Paolo Villaggio) who has been
assigned to their school by mistake.
Waiting for his transfer, Marco decides to do what he can in what appears to him a foreign culture. Fascinating events and
interactions unfold, with both humorous and tragic overtones, which lead to meaningful changes for the teacher as well as his
students. He develops understanding and respect, while they learn to trust and to try. If only for a short time, Marco Sperelli
becomes an agent of hope for the children and their families.
Ciao Professore and our next film,Travolti, were both directed by Lina Wertmuller, the first female to be nominated for the
Academy Award for Best Director (1976). Lina studied at the Academy of Theatre in Rome and spent a few years with theatrical
projects before moving on to film. She was assistant director to Fellini for the movie, 8 ½, wrote and directed her debut feature
film, The Lizards, in l963 and swiftly assumed prominence as director in Italy and internationally. Her productions, especially in
the 70’s, were regarded as bold and controversial, yet humorous and entertaining. With a neo-realistic nuance, she typically
portrayed political, social and sexual inequities. In addition to the ones we are presenting, two other of her many masterpieces are,
Love and Anarchy, and Seven Beauties.
Our next film is: Swept Away Monday, April, 26, 2010

Italian Culture & Heritage
Brush Up on Your Italian
The Italian Giovanni da Verrazzano was the first
European explorer to pass New York Harbor. Other
Italians played an important role in early United States
history, as Filippo Mazzei, an important Italian physician
and a promoter of liberty, close friend of Thomas
Jefferson. He acted as an agent to purchase arms for
Virginia during the American Revolutionary War.
Throughout the 1800s, Italians arrived in the US in small
numbers, though most immigration from Italy occurred
in the 20th century between 1880 and 1960. Most Italian
Americans came from Southern Italy, Naples at first, and
Sicily, many as rural peasants with very little education.
Smaller but significant numbers came from the northern
regions of Liguria and Veneto. From 1890 to 1900,
655,888 immigrants arrived in the United States, of
which 2/3 were men. The main reasons for Italian
immigration were the poor economic conditions in Italy
during this period, particularly in the southern regions. In
the United States, Italians settled in and dominated
specific neighborhoods (often called "Little Italy") where
they could interact with one another, establish a familiar
cultural presence, and find favorite foods. Many Italian
immigrants arrived with very little cash or cultural capital
(that is, they were not educated or intellectually
sophisticated) and generally performed manual labor.
Their neighborhoods were typically slums with
overcrowded tenements and poor sanitation. Tuberculosis
was rampant. Italian immigration peaked from 1900 until
1914, when WWI made such intercontinental movement
impossible. In many cases, the Italian immigrants were
subjected to severe anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant
discrimination and even violence such as lynching. By
1978, 5.3 million Italians had immigrated to the United
States; two million arrived between 1900 and 1914.
About a 1/3 of these immigrants intended to stay only
briefly, in order to make money and return to Italy, and
were commonly referred to as "Birds of Passage." While
one in four did return home, the rest either decided to
stay or were prevented from returning by the war.

INGREDIENTS

2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped finely
1 garlic clove, chopped
½ red bell pepper, diced
¾ cup risotto rice, washed
1 tsp dried oregano
1 2/3 cups hot vegetable or chicken stock
Scant ½ cup dry white wine
2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
2 ¼ oz / 75g mozzarella cheese
Oil, for frying
Fresh basil sprig, to garnish
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat the oil in a skillet and cook the onion and garlic for
3-4 minutes or until just softened.
2. Add the bell peppers, rice and oregano to the skillet.
Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring to coat the rice in the oil.
3. Mix the stock together with the wine and add to the skillet
a ladleful at a time, waiting for the liquid to be absorbed by
the rice before adding the next ladleful.
4. Once all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is
tender (it should take about 15 min in total), remove the
skillet from the heat, mix in grated Parmesan cheese and
leave until the mixture is cool enough to handle.
5. Cut the cheese into 12 pieces. Taking about 1 tablespoon
of risotto, shape the mixture around the cheese pieces to
make 12 balls.
6. Heat the oil until a cube of bread browns in 30 seconds.
Cook the risotto balls, in batches of 4, for 2 minutes or until
golden.
7. Remove the risotto balls with a slotted spoon and drain
thoroughly on absorbent kitchen paper. Garnish with a sprig
of basil and serve the risotto balls hot.
