The VTV meeting at CJ’s Restaurant in Arroyo
Grande was called to order at 6:35 pm by Gale
Haugen. In attendance were: Gale Haugen
and Hector Paz; Cliff and Bev Erickson; Bill
Santmyer; Doug Nicoll; John and Debra Mahoney; Larry Wright; Barry and Judy Fitzjarrell; Jan Webb and Dave Schultz; Brian Weber
and Roberta Haylock; Charlie and Joan Perry;
Mike Williamson; Gerry White; Chuck Robertson; and Clay Beck. We also had a Corvette
guest – Bruce Potter.
Treasurer’s Report – Hector Paz. Our expenses for the two months were the monthly website
charge of $12.95 for each month. Postage expense was $4.40. Autocross expenses were
$208.22 and $238.31 which included $191.88 for
the autocross portable johns, gas, ice and other
miscellaneous expenses. We also paid $105.54
for the car decals and $30.00 and $20.00 for TSA
security badges. At this time we have a
$7,400.56 balance. Hector also updated the VTV
autocross income and expenses report for 2013,
2014 and 2015. We are still not having the income that we normally made on the events. The
July 11th autocross brought in $1,320.03 but that
is only $198.83 more that the May 2nd autocross.
Bill made the motion to approve the budget with
Mike seconding the motion. Budget was approved by all present
Minutes - There were no minutes for the July
4th meeting due to the fact that we were at
Patty and Bill Santmyer’s home with the Model
A Club enjoying a great BBQ. The minutes
from the June 4th meeting were approved by
all present.
New Business – Gale thanked Joan and
Charlie Perry for sending flowers for Cindy Orrico’s service. Joe Orrico sent a thank you
note to VTV that Gale read to the members.
Gale wished happy birthday to the July and
August VTV members: Dan Miller (7-3), Brian
Weber (7-5), Charlie Bishop (7-11), Al Ferguson (7-22), Debbie Chase (7-23), Dave
Schultz (7-24), John Mahoney (8-1), Nathan
Griffin (8-3), Mark Miller (8-11), Bee Jay Jones
(8-19), Cliff Erickson (8-28) and Roberta Haylock (8-31)
Old Business – Car Decals. Since Michele
was unable to attend this meeting, she gave
Judy the car decals and Judy gave the decals
to members that had not received them yet.
Gale suggested that we just mail them to the
VTV members, however, the question came up
with which decal should be mailed. There are
two types of decals for placement on the inside or the outside window. So this item was
put on hold until we make a decision.
Treasurer’s Report – Hector Paz. Hector
reviewed the current budget changes that occurred in June and July with members. VTV
received $1,058.00 in June and $1,218.60 in
July from Motorsports Reg from the autocross.
We have also received $480.00 from the Annual Blast registrations – four in July. We
have received three more registrations and
expect more in August.
NCCC Governor – Charlie Perry. Charlie and
Joan went to Cindy Orrico’s services. Cindy was a
great lady and will be missed by all. Charlie did
attend the NCCC Governor meeting and has voted
yes that VTV will help support the West Coast Regional Convention in Las Vegas in 2017. We are
not committed to do the convention just that we
will assist/support as needed.
Vice President’s Report – Clay Beck. Clay
reported about all the events VTV members attended in the last two months. They included:
June 6th – Run to the Nethercutt Museum and
Collection.
June 20th – Porsche Club Autocross.
June 26th to 28th – 33rd Annual Big Bear Bash.

Then Clay updated the members regarding upcoming events: August 7th – Allan Hancock Car
Show. Gale will bring flyers, Blast flyers and

Gale introduced our visitor – Bruce Potter – to the
group. Bruce lives in Nipomo and is not married
but he does have two dogs he rescued that he
enjoys. Bruce owns two Corvettes. He is restoring his 1968 Bronze four speed with 114,000
miles so it will be awhile before he will be showing it. His other Corvette is a 1989 C4 Coupe
that is an automatic. However, he is looking for a
1996 Corvette Grand Sport to buy in the future.
He was referred to our club by a friend at Allan
Hancock, so he found our website and checked
the calendar and decided to come to the meeting.
He did state that his schedule is busy right now
but hopes to be able to attend the October meeting.
Gale called a break at 7:00 pm so members
could enjoy their dinners. The meeting resumed at 7:25 pm.
Gale went through the VTV September 2015
Annual Blast Schedule with members. She explained each task and asked members who
would take the responsibility that the task
would be completed by the time of the Blast.
Gale will be sending an email to members with
a new schedule that will show what task the
members signed up for. So look for the email
and if you have any questions, please call
Gale.
Judy – Thanked Patty and Bill for the great July
4th BBQ at their home. The space was great, the
potluck BBQ was excellent and it was fun to meet
the Model A club members.
Barry – Barry bought Judy a used 1980 Corvette
automatic – she does not drive stick – in a deep
burgundy color. It needs work – seats recovered,
carpeting and some other stuff.
Bev – Bev shared her first roller coaster ride.
She was asked if she would be skydiving next.
We received a very large smile and she told us,
she would think about it.
Bill – Thanked everyone that came to the July 4th
BBQ. He and Patty really enjoyed hosting the
event.
Brian – Thanked Bill for showing him his Model
A.
Mike – Mike told the members about a simulator
that you can buy for $185,000 that lets you experience the G-forces.
Clay – Clay had a four items that he wanted to
discuss with the members.
Clay asked members if they had any problems
with lending our blower to the Porsche groups
for their autocrosses.

Clay—
 They have agreed to lend VTV their blower
when we have autocrosses. Gale pointed
out that Tom Dobyns was the person who
donated our blower to the club. So it is
okay for the Porsche and VTV borrow each
other’s blower for autocrosses.
John -


Then Clay brought up that the Porsche
Club has helmets that they rent out at their
autocrosses. Since we cannot afford this
expense, Clay suggested that maybe we
could borrow the Porsche Club’s helmets
and rent them at our autocrosses. Since
these are the Porsche Club’s helmet, the
$5.00 rental fee should go to the Porsche
Club. Gale asked Clay to work with the
Porsche group and see how this could work
and bring the results back to the members.
The next item was regarding the Axware
program. He thought it would be good to
have a day that we set up a mini course at
his home and cross train members on the
Axware program. We would need Gale and
the laptop for the training. But this would
give the club more members that could
work the timing table in case anyone could
not make it to the autocross. He suggested we have a training in the fall and
Doug – Doug attended a two day autocross in
Santa Clara this past weekend and he was
very impressed with how they did the autocross and the racing results. He also suggested that we drop low speed from our autocrosses. This will have to be researched to see if
the NCCC regulations allow us to drop the
term low speed for our autocrosses.
John – John and Deb are going to Monterey
next weekend. He also told members about
the next SLO Derelict run is going to be to
Mendenhall. Since they are not having a BBQ,
it will be a day tour only.
The regular price of admission is $15 but if you
go with the SLO Derelicts the price will be $10.00.
He was not sure of the date and would let everyone know later.
Larry – Larry told the group to check their current Blue Bars magazine – page 26 - regarding
the discount that Eckler’s is giving to NCCC members. If you order online, you get a 12% discount
and the NCCC gets a 5% rebate. You have to use
a specific code, but it is in the sponsorship article.
So please check it out.
Charlie – Charlie asked members if everyone is
receiving their Blue Bars magazine. If anyone is
not getting their Blue Bars, let Charlie know so he
can check it out for them.
Hector – All members that knew Cindy Orrico will
miss her greatly. Hector suggested that at the
Blast event, we have a minute of silent to honor
Cindy’s memory. We discussed having her picture or something at the Blast that everyone
could sign, etc. but we did not decide on any one
thing yet. But all members thought this was an
excellent suggestion and we all felt that we do
need to do something at the Blast.
50/50 Drawing of $45.50 was won by Barry
Fitzjarrell.
Name Tag Drawing of $5.00 was Allison but she
was not present so the money goes to the next
meeting.
Door Prize Drawing was won by Gerry White.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.
Minutes submitted by: Judy Fitzjarrell, VTV Secretary.
The next meeting will be held in Santa Maria at
a location to be determined.

33rd Annual Big Bear Bash
By Judy Fitzjarrell
On June 26th, Clay Beck, Dave Schultz, Jan
Webb, Barry and Judy Fitzjarrell drove to Big
Bear for the Corvettes West annual bash. Since
some of the roads were closed due to the fire
east of Big Bear, we took the stop and go route
through Los Angeles to the 18. Luckily we found
an In ‘n Out Burger restaurant for lunch that
helped everyone’s patience. Once you are on
18, the scenery up the mountains was totally
awesome and worth the traffic. (Warning – if
you have motion sickness problems, take your
meds before going there!)
We got to the host hotel – Robinhood Resort –
around 3:30 pm. We registered and got our information packets. We found out that the airport had called Corvette West on Wednesday to
cancel the autocross on Saturday because they
were using it for the fire suppression unit. However, there was second autocross event scheduled for Sunday at the airport that was cancelled
too. Since that group’s autocross was being set
up at Snow Summit, they allowed the Corvette
West to have our autocross on Saturday. (God
loves autocrosses!)
I asked if we could put out flyers for our autocross and upcoming Blast and learned something
new. We were told that if we had called the
number on the flyer, we could requested them to
add our flyers to their information packets and then
everyone would have received them. You just have
to send them the flyers early. (I will be remembering this for next year.) We then went to the
parking lot and checked out the car show. They
did have some really nice Corvettes on display.
We then went to the motel that we were booked
in – Honey Bear Lodge. It turned out to be only
four blocks from where the bash was being held.
Honey Bear Lodge was a nice motel and the
room were large with an open living room, kitchen and dining area and the bedroom was a separate room. Barry and Clay went back to the
Robinhood Resort and got their Corvettes teched
for the autocross.
33rd Annual Big Bear Bash
By Judy Fitzjarrell
Before dinner, we toured Big Bear and went over
the land bridge to drive around Big Bear Lake.
The drought really was apparent when we were
crossing the lake. The east side of the lake was
dry and on the west side of the lake, the water
was down but you could still go boating, etc.
There were some really beautiful homes and great
views of the lake. We all really enjoyed the drive.
We had a good dinner at the Cowboy Steakhouse
and Saloon and then it was back to the motel.
On Saturday, Barry, Clay and Dave went to the
autocross and had their fun. Jan went shopping
and Judy slept in. Since Clay, Dave and Jan were
going to leave after the autocross, we all had
lunch at the Bear Belly Deli. They had great sandwiches, etc. One interesting thing at the deli was
that they also had a wall of pictures that was customers’ bear bellies. No – none of use volunteered to pose for a picture. Then Clay, Dave and
Jan were on the road to go back home and Barry
and Judy went shopping. We also drove around
the complete Big Bear Lake but opposite of how
we drove it on Friday.
Barry and Judy went to the awards presentation
where Barry received his autocross 2nd in class
award and Judy forgot to take pictures – sorry.
On Sunday morning, we drove home and slept in
our own beds again. Would I go again – yes! It
was fun, the people are great but next time we
will get there earlier and leave later so we can
participate in more events and meet more of the
Corvette groups.
Tech Corner—2015 Corvette Z06
Move over Lamborghinis, McLarens and Ferraris...
the 2015 Z06 has the horsepower to keep up or
even beat the higher priced production sports cars
on the market. With 650 horsepower that can run
zero to 60 in 2.95 seconds the Z06 ranks right up
there with the more expensive sports cars without
the high price. The base price of a Z06 is $79,995.
Fully loaded it costs $110,000. A convertible top is
available for the first time along with an aluminum
frame, optional eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

VTV Members Haul in the Trophy’s
Did You Know
By Judy Fitzjarrell
Vapor Trail Vette members have been cleaning up
at the car shows lately. On July 12th both Gerry
White & Jim Carson were in the Mad Bomerz car
show at the Nipomo Regional Park and both received a trophy for 1st in their category. The Arroyo Grande Cars Sho (that's the way they spell it)
was July 25th. Jim won 2nd in his class and won
the Police Chief's choice trophy! Gerry won a 1st
place at the Texas Blowout, July 31st. Yesterday,
there were four VTV cars (Gerry, Jim, Larry, and
Bill) in the show at Lompoc. Bill's car came in first
place for the overall car show winning the People's
Choice Award! Jim got 1st place in the older Corvettes category. So, it was great to see the trophy's for so many events!!! Great job to all of
you!
Did You Know
By Judy Fitzjarrell
This month I interviewed Chuck Robertson at his
first VTV autocross on July 11th. He was born in
Germany were his father was stationed in the Air
Force. He has traveled the world including Japan
with his family and also when he joined the Air
Force. Chuck was stationed Turkey and he loved
the opportunity to explore different cultures. He is
an avid reader, volunteers at the Veteran’s Clinic
in Santa Maria, and is partial to wine tasting tours.
He is in the processes of updating his kitchen.
Once that project is done, Chuck wants to visit all
50 states.
Chuck always liked Corvettes and in 2000 in
bought his 1998 Silver Corvette Coupe. Chuck
joined VTV last year and was interested in meeting
other Corvette owners and doing autocross. He
has participated in various runs and events and
decided that it was time to try the autocross. He
assisted in getting the autocross set up on Friday
to get a feel of the track and what all goes on behind the scene. Bright and early on Saturday,
Chuck was at the track ready to try his first autocross. He had his Corvette teched, walked the
course and was ready to autocross. Chuck did all
ten runs, did not hit one cone and steadily improved his run times.
When I asked him how he liked his first autocross,
he stated that he couldn’t wait for the next one.
So another new autocross enthusiast has been
born!
Tech Corner—2015 Corvette Z06
Cont’d
This years Z06 is powered by an all-new 6.2 liter
supercharged V-8 engine. The 650 horsepower
and 650 pound-feet of torque is a jump of 145
horsepower and 180 pound-fee from the outgoing
model’s 7.0 liter V-8.
The automatic puts the Z-6 at a potential disadvantage since nearly all competitors offer a dualclutch gearbox. But on the track the automatic
proved its worth. On the track at Spring Mountain
Motorsports Ranch the fastest laps of the day
were in cars with the self-shifting gearbox.
There are a few flaws in the Z06 such as the
steering could use more feedback from the road
and the non-carbon ceramic brakes on the car
that was tested faded during hard driving.
A fact I didn’t know was how the Z06 got its
name. In 1963 GM first used Z06 as a code wellinformed buyers could specify on their order sheet
to buy a race-ready Corvette. This got GM around
a ban by the Sports Car Club of America against
factory-sponsored auto racing. A buyer could
simply check a box on the order sheet and get a
Corvette fitted with all race parts that a factory
sponsored car would have if it wasn’t for the ban.
A few decades later Chevrolet resurrected the Z06
name for a track-oriented (but street legal) version of the 5th generation Corvette in 2001.
According to David Undercoffler this vehicle is
mean, visceral and thrilling. Maybe $80,000 is a
good place to start for the fun of driving an amazing car.

Nethercutt Museum and Collection
By Clay Beck
On Saturday, June 6, 2015, a few of us met at the
Chevron Station in Orcutt and then drove 2.5
hours to the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar. The
museum showcases more than 130 of the world's
greatest antique, vintage, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the
Pebble Beach Contours d'Elegance. Among the
treasures spanning four floors in the collection's
original facility, the antiques and automobiles are
showcased in an exquisite re-creation of an opulent automotive grand salon of the 1920's and
1930's.
An amazing collection of automobile mascots, antique furniture, clocks and watches, and one of the
world’s finest collections of Mechanical Musical Instruments were displayed. After the museum
tour, just steps outside the museum, were a perfectly restored steam locomotive and a private car,
which was owned by the eldest daughter of Santa
Anita Race Track founder, E.J. "Lucky" Baldwin.
Some of us also toured the Merle Norman Cosmetics building next door to the Collection building.
After the tours, we headed towards home and had
dinner at The Outback Restaurant near Santa Barbara. A very good time for all.
VTV Run, Arroyo Grande Car Show
and Newman’s Car Creations Tour

Kyle Newman had their 57 wagon parked out
front so we would not miss the turn off. His dad
Paul introduced himself on our arrival and we
started viewing their projects. Parked out front
was a C2 grand Sport with LS7 and C4 tricked out
suspension. Next we discussed the VW chassis
with C4 suspension and how it was progressing. Next we looked over the almost completed
chassis for a 66 Vette, LS7, 6 speed auto, and
tricked out suspension. Then we discussed the
other frames in the shop being built for C1 and C3
69 corvettes. Lots of interesting discussions and
looked over the 57 wagon ready for next weekend’s autocross. I did discuss the Optima Battery
series and Kyle stated if I watched the show, look
for his 57 Wagon that participated in three of the
events. He was also looking forward to the next
event in October at Fontana. I figured he trailered the 57 to the events but no - it is not a trailer queen - but he drives the wagon to and from
VTV Run, Arroyo Grande Car Show
and Newman’s Car Creations Tour
On Saturday, July 25th, there was a SLO Derelicts
outing to the Arroyo Grande Car Show and a tour
of Kyle Newman’s Car Creations garage. Our
group for the day included Clay, Bee Jay, Dave,
Gerry, Bill, Brian and myself. We did see Tom and
discussed his Z06 at the car show but he could not
join us on the run. We started with a meet at Pismo Derelicts then headed over to the Arroyo
Grande Car Show. The AG Car Show was a different format this year with the main road through
downtown remaining open but the cars were nice
and everyone had fun. There was a fine display of
Corvettes that included Jim and Mary Carson’s C2
that looked very well as always. From there, we
headed for Templeton. We decided to do lunch in
Atascadero at Sylvester’s Burgers and everyone
seemed to enjoy their lunch. After a very filling
lunch, we headed north to Newman’s Car Crea-
each event. The
day ended after lots
of performance discussions and racing
history that included
Pike’s Peak Hill
climb, magazine articles and off road
racing. Excellent
Corvette day with
VTV members.
