Here is our tentative line-up: 12:30 Photographers show their camera mods and how it enhances their art. Among the highlights: Checko Salgado will do a light painting demonstration. Julian Kilker, who was just named Best Local Photographer by KNPR’s Desert Companion, will also be there talking about camera mods and/or data journalism. Markus Houy is showing an external camera device help focus an anamorphic lens attachment. “Sergio “Checko” Salgado was born and raised in Las Vegas. He is freelance photographer, UNLV photo instructor, musician and family man. Checko’s interest as an artist concentrates in the area of light painting photography and art photojournalism. He is also an activists who has always been involved in his community promoting art and culture through his photography, organizing events and education. “ 1:30 Teachers who are curious about free and low cost local resources to foster a “Maker Mindset” and encourage students who are self-starters in STEAM courses can talk to a panel of local educators doing fantastic work with sometimes minimal resources. Some topics: creating Maker spaces in schools; school Maker Faires, producing Maker summer camps; Next Generation Science Standards-based professional development for teachers, and more! 2:30 Drones! Since there will be a big drone arena at the Maker Faire with anything from toys to prosumer drones to racing drones, we needed to have a panel. Come meet our local drone experts! 3:30 “Balloons in Space, or There and Back Again”: Somewhere in the middle of the Mojave desert, a group of engineers try to launch a JavaScript-powered weather balloon to the edge of space. Along the way they learn about ham radios, explosions, and THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. 4:30 Making “Making” a Business: Doing what you love takes financial security. Meet a panel of locals who have been there, done that, and have special insights into making Making into a business, patents, and kickstarters. Maker Details 3D Hubs 3D Hubs is the world’s largest network of 3D printers. We’d like to enable our community of local maker Hubs to run a stand offering 3DP demonstrations and 3D Printed give aways. We are offering demonstrations and giving away keychain 3D prints to attendees. Nikki Finnemore www.3dhubs.com Adelson Campus Young Makers Adelson Campus students, from various grades, are excited to showcase several hands on STEAM projects conducted within the classroom throughout the school year. The Adelson Campus recently announced a multi-million dollar technology initiative launching for the 2016-2017 school year. This game-changing initiative features a 5,000 sq ft Startup Incubator Lab. Adelson students will have access to state-of-the-art technology and expert mentors to design, engineer, create, code, and develop real world projects. We will have activities in digital media creation for all ages, programming microcontrollers for teens, programming BeeBots for little kids. Matt Boland Adelson Campus www.adelsoncampus.org Making “Aesthetic Evidence”: exploring technology in photography “Aesthetic Evidence” is a multimedia exhibit designed to raise the public’s awareness about data and research. Parts of the exhibit were shown at UNLV’s Donna Beam Gallery and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities at the Nevada Humanities Gallery. Demonstrating that photographers and artists are some of the earliest Makers, this exhibit/ presentation explores the technology behind the exhibit, including the lighting, camera control, and audio system. Julian Kilker UNLV School of Journalism www.kilker.com 5 Arduino SNES Trinity This exhibit, with three interactive projects, explores the possibilities afforded by integrating Arduino microcontrollers with SNES gaming consoles. Modular SNES is a circuit bent SNES in which all the bends are controlled with a modularsynth style patch-bay built into the console. SNES Multiplayer Modes allows two people to play single player games with the aid of an Arduino Mega. The booth’s centerpiece project, 1 to 4, explores divergence between four SNES consoles that are all receiving the same controller input data from one pair of controllers. Faire goers are welcome to play games on the hacked consoles, try out their own patch on the Modular SNES, or simply watch the games from afar. Nathan Villicaña-Shaw http://bitdeph.com/game-console-bending/ Auto Drummer 9000 A drum kit that plays itself. An Arduino, a few car door lock actuators, and some custom circuitry and software allow this drum set to play midi drum sequences all by itself. Perfect for jamming out on your own, or a great replacement for that drummer who never shows up for band practice. I also have a refined version of the Guntroller that I displayed at LVMMF 2013. It is a handheld VR device for playing first person video games. The Guntroller is very hands on and lots of fun. At the ‘13 maker faire the prototype was very popular and lots of visitors enjoyed playing with it.
