Digital Media Lab As part of the second floor redesign last year, the library added a Digital Media Lab. The Digital Media Lab is a soundproof room that makes an excellent home-away-fromhome recording studio, complete with high quality stereo speakers and wall panel sound diffusers. GEPL members can create music and videos, convert VHS to DVD and vinyl records to digital files, and edit digital creations in Garage Band, iMovie, or Audacity. BUILDING A BETTER GEPL: Youth Department The Digital Media Lab is reserved for high school and adult GEPL cardholders using the provided equipment. Societal and technological shifts are changing the way members of the Glen Ellyn community use the library, and the library is designing new spaces to accommodate the community’s evolving needs. Digital Conversion Nights The recently renovated second floor gives adult members a space to meet, create, collaborate, and learn. Now the youngest members of the library will be given a new space that better reflects the way that young people are learning and engaging with their world. Watch demonstrations on how to use the all-new Digital Media Lab to convert your VHS tapes to DVD, your vinyl records to digital, and your old slides to digital images. Thursday, October 8 • 7-8:30 pm • 2nd Floor of Library A New Middle School Room A space dedicated just for Middle Schoolers will be created toward the front of the department. The room will have tables and chairs for studying as well as a large chalkboard surface to encourage creativity and self-expression. Learn how you can record music in the new Digital Media Lab using MacBook Pro, Mixer, and GarageBand software with local musician Eric Lambert. Children's Interactive Play Area The area will feature five interactive play panels for children of all ages, a pinwheel-shaped discovery/ activity table, a walk-up LEGO wall, interactive magnet board, and custom puppet theater for imaginative play. Early Reader Nook The nook will have oversized seating designed to fit both an adult and child comfortably, to create an environment where parents and kids can read together. The Youth Department as a whole will receive a more colorful paint scheme, fresh carpet, and updated lighting. These contributions fund the library’s collections and typically raise more than $15,000 for the library. FOL members, friends, and volunteers fold the solicitation letter and stuff it with a return envelope into another envelope, and a preprinted mailing label is affixed. This is a great oneday service opportunity to undertake with friends while enjoying coffee, snacks, and loads of conversation.
