Welcome to the Wheaton College community; we are glad you are here and look forward
to getting to know you! Since transitions can be difficult, it is our prayer that God will
give you a special measure of His peace and joy during this time. We hope that you will
quickly feel at home in the area.
This booklet has been compiled to help you become oriented to various facets of life at Wheaton
College as well as to life in and around Wheaton. Although the booklet is updated periodically,
details may change, so please double-check specifics ahead of time.
As you discover more about Wheaton, we encourage you to get involved in the Wheaton College
Women's Club (WCWC). Open to all faculty and staff women, and faculty and staff wives, the
Club has a long, rich history of service to others as well as self-enrichment activities. In addition
to Fall, Winter, and Spring events, the WCWC also provides a wide range of interest groups.

Places to Visit
Anderson Commons: Lovingly called "Saga" by students, the dining hall provides excellent food for very
reasonable prices with a faculty/staff ID (when the employee is present). “FOHTY” or “From Our House To
Yours” allows the college community to order a pre-cooked meal (for four to six people) by Tuesday and carry it
out on Wednesday (to reheat). Check the website for weekly menus for SAGA and for FOHTY.

Todd M. Beamer Center: Located in the lower level of Anderson Commons, it houses Sam's and the Stupe
(two campus dining locations also available to families of faculty and staff), the Campus Post Office (CPO), a
convenience store, student organization offices, a prayer chapel, and the Phelps Room (multi-purpose room).
The Stupe: Located in the lower level of the Todd M. Beamer Center, watch for an email announcing the $3.10
Burger Bundle deal offered to faculty and staff families on Thursday nights throughout the year.
Billy Graham Center Museum: Located in the Billy Graham Center, the museum presents a terrific display of the
history of Christian evangelism and its influence on American society and of the Billy Graham ministry in

Buswell Library: There are rich resources available, as well as numerous special collections. Take

Chapel: Chapel services convene each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:35 am in Edman Chapel. Visitors
are welcome to sit in the balcony. The chapel schedule is posted just prior to each semester. Services are broadcast
on the radio live and rebroadcast at 6:00 pm the same day (88.1 FM). Grad Chapel is on Wednesdays 10:30 -11:15

Perry Mastodon: Perry Mastodon was discovered in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and is housed in the Meyer Science
Center.
Wade Center: Located near Edman Chapel at 351 Lincoln, this international study center contains a special
collection of books and papers from seven British authors: C.S. Lewis, Barfield, Chesterton, Mac Donald,
Sayers, Tolkien and Williams. It also hosts C.S. Lewis's wardrobe. www.wadecenter.com
Wheaton College Women’s Club: Open to all female faculty, female staff, and faculty and staff wives.
Offering Fall and Winter brunches, a Spring Soup Supper for everyone, and smaller interest groups. Check

Corinthian Co-op: The Women’s Club operates our own Wheaton College bargain basement! Items
are free to you and your family. You may also drop off used clean clothing, appliances in good
condition, toys, books, etc. Located in the basement of 818 College Ave.

Mon. 1-3, Tues. 10-12, Wed. 3-5, Thurs. 11:30-2:00, and the second and fourth Saturdays 10-12.

Things to Do
Arena Theater: Theater and box office are located in Jenks Hall. Three dramatic productions are featured each year.

Artist Series: See world-renowned musicians and performers in seven performances each year at Edman Chapel.
Highly recommended. Reduced rates are available for faculty/staff/student subscribers at the Ticket Office in the

Athletic Events: The College fields many intercollegiate sports teams and appreciates your support. Free
admission for you and your family with faculty/staff ID card. GO THUNDER!
Community School of the Arts: The CSA offers music classes and other arts programming for children ages 18
months - 7 years (including preparatory and Suzuki programs). This reputable school currently enrolls 1500
students from over 50 communities throughout the greater Chicago area. There is a small discount for

locations and times. Each year various departments sponsor conferences, featuring outstanding speakers.

Cantigny Gardens and War Memorial Museum: Located in Wheaton. Picnic grounds, museum and formal
gardens of Colonel McCormick open to the public from 7 am until dark. Mansion tours--Tues. - Sun. 10 am 5 pm. Concerts Sunday afternoons. Wonderful Sunday brunch. Afternoon tea. Parking fee of $5.00.

College of DuPage: Located in Glen Ellyn. In addition to a variety of courses available, the McAninch
Arts Center presents a complete calendar of events, including concerts by the New Philharmonic

Cosley Zoo: Located in Wheaton. A small park/zoo with animals, nature and wildlife areas, museum and picnic

Danada Equestrian Center: Located in Wheaton. Horse farm including hayrides in the summer and fall, and

DuPage Historical Museum: Located in Wheaton. Has many local historical artifacts displayed in settings typical
of the times. The building itself has an interesting history. Ask for information about the model railroaders club

French Market: Saturdays, April through November 10 from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. Located in downtown Wheaton at
Main and Liberty. Numerous vendors sell baked goods, jewelry, fruit, vegetables, and flowers.

The Illinois Prairie Path: Lovely and popular walking and biking trail running from Elmhurst through Wheaton
and branching off in two directions, one toward Elgin and one toward Aurora. Pick it up alongside the Chicago and
Northwestern tracks. Runs alongside campus and through downtown Wheaton. www.ipp.org
Kline Creek Farm: Located in Winfield. An 1890's living history museum featuring many seasonal special
events. Open Thurs. - Mon. 9 am - 5 pm. www.dupageforest.com
The Little Popcorn Store: Located in Wheaton. Wedged into what was once an alley; it features terrific
popcorn and a large selection of "penny" candy that kids (and grown-ups) will love.
Memorial Park: Located at Hale St. and Seminary Ave. (downtown), Wheaton. Small park with bandshell
where the Wheaton Municipal Band plays a free concert every Thursday night at 8 pm throughout the

Morton Arboretum: Located in Lisle. A 1700 acre park with 14 miles of trails to enjoy. Offers a wide variety of
trees and shrubs in beautiful settings. Springtime blossoms and brilliant autumn colors are worth seeing. Lovely
arboretum gift shop, café and restaurant open 11 am - 3 pm. A new children's garden is also a must-see for anyone
with young kids - very informative and fun, complete with playgrounds, water play, interpretive centers, and more.

Northside Park: Located in Wheaton. Swimming pool open from June until September, with season passes
available to residents at reduced prices. Picnic tables (reserve for large groups at the Park District office), tennis
courts, baseball diamonds and a sledding hill. The lagoon is used for ice skating in winter.

Rice Pool and Water Park: Located in Wheaton. This facility boasts a large, "zero-depth" pool with separate
diving area and lap lanes. Three large water slides, volleyball and sand play area as well as baby pool with
fountains and a waterfall are available to patrons. Season passes available for purchase by Wheaton Park District

Wheaton Park District: Maintains many parks in Wheaton and offers a wide variety of classes ranging from
ballet and karate to cooking and first aid. Winfield, West Chicago, and other towns also offer an array of courses

Wheaton Public Library: A short walk from campus, this excellent library offers a variety of programs and
services. Ask to have your library card stamped for use in other DuPage County libraries.

Willowbrook Wildlife Center: Located in Glen Ellyn. Shelter for injured or abandoned wildlife; animals are cared
for, treated and released back to the wild when possible. Indoor and outdoor viewing areas on short trails; small

Blackberry Historical Farm and Pioneer Village: Located in Aurora. Features a replica steam train that runs
through a pioneer town. Kids get unlimited pony, train, and carousel rides. Nice picnic area by the lake.

Fermilab: Located in Batavia. Tour the largest nuclear particle accelerator in the U.S. Grounds are also home to

Fox River Trolley Museum: Located in South Elgin. Ride the trolley on an authentic electric railway built in 1896.
Special events are held throughout the year (i.e., trolley ride to a pumpkin patch in October). www.foxtrolley.org
Geneva, Illinois: A quaint historic village along the Fox River with lots of fun shopping and fine eateries
thirteen miles west of Wheaton. Check out The Little Traveler on Third St. for lunch and shopping.

Kane County Flea Market: Located in St. Charles. Open the first Saturday and Sunday of every month year-round
from 7 am – 4 pm. Acres of antiques, collectibles, food and market are available in this large fairground. Admission

Kohl Children’s Museum: Located in Glenview. A hands-on children’s museum with changing exhibits for

Kuipers Family Farm: Located in Maple Grove. Open September-December. Over 220 acres with apple orchards,
thriving pumpkin patch, a wide variety of Christmas trees, two gift shops and on-site bakery.

Long Grove: A restored 19th century village settled by Germans in the 1840's. Shops and restaurants.

Mitchell Museum of the American Indian: Located in Evanston. American Indian art and artifacts on display.

Naper Settlement: Located in Naperville. Special events include a Heritage House Walk and Civil War Days in
the month of May, the Circus in September, and Christmas memories featuring caroling, decorations and Charles

Naperville Riverwalk: Located in downtown Naperville. The Riverwalk follows the DuPage River for quite a

Ravinia Festival Park: Located in Highland Park. The summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Adler Planetarium: A multi-media sky show "transports" audiences through space to visit the solar system and
distant galaxies. Exhibits feature space exploration, telescopes, etc. New shows each year. Special Christmas

Art Institute of Chicago: One of the country's foremost art museums. Internationally renowned collection

Chicago Children's Museum: Three floors of awesome learning adventures for toddlers to 10-year olds.

Chicago Historical Society: This is the city's oldest cultural institution. Exhibition highlights are Lincoln and the

Field Museum of Natural History: One of the world's four greatest natural history museums. Exhibits include
Ancient Egypt, dinosaurs, pre-historic man, and cultures of North, Middle, and South Americas.

Garfield Park Conservatory: 4 ½ acres of horticultural exhibits. More than 5,000 species and varieties.

Grant Park: 319 acre park on Lake Michigan; formal gardens and free public programs.

John Hancock Center: Visit one of the tallest buildings in Chicago. The Observatory and the Signature Room
(restaurant) on the 95th floor afford great views of the city by the lake. Then promenade 1000 feet down to
Hancock's basement to the Cheesecake Factory for a fine meal or delicious dessert.

Lake Michigan Beaches: Several attractive beaches are located right in Chicago. The one at Fullerton Rd. across
from Lincoln Park Zoo is particularly nice, but doesn't have good parking. North Ave. beach is crowded but has
bathrooms, a restaurant, and parking. Foster has free parking and bathrooms, but is furthest north. Oak Street near

Lincoln Park Conservatory: Provides a fine array of ever-changing floral exhibits plus a permanent collection of

Lincoln Park Zoo: Free and open 365 days a year. www.lpz.org
Millennium Park: This 24.5 acre park is an unprecedented center for world-class art, music, and architecture
where you can experience everything from interactive public art and ice skating to al fresco dining and free

Museum of Science and Industry: Chicago's great tourist attraction, bringing in nearly four million visitors each
year. Thousands of exhibits demonstrate scientific principles, technological advances and industrial applications.
Some highlights are an underground coal mine, the Apollo 8 Command Module, and an Omni-max Theater with

Navy Pier: Located on Lake Michigan, just east of downtown, the pier has been a landmark since it first opened
in 1916 as a shipping facility and is now Illinois' #1 tourist attraction. It showcases a unique collection of
restaurants and shops in addition to unequaled recreational and exhibition facilities. Attractions include ferris
wheel, carousel, mini-golf, wave swinger, ropes course, boats/cruises, IMAX theater, and more. Seasonal

John G. Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium: The world's largest indoor aquarium houses more than 8,000
aquatic animals of 819 species. Daily dolphin training presentations in the auditorium and hand feeding by

Oriental Institute Museum of the University of Chicago: Located in Chicago. World-renowned for its
collection focusing on the history, art and archeology of the ancient Near East. Admission is free, donati ons

Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower): One of the world's tallest buildings, it stands 1,454 feet high. The 103rd
floor enclosed observation Skydeck, 1,353 feet above ground, offers a spectacular view. A moving wall sculpture,
"Universe," by American sculptor Alexander Calder, is located in the Wacker Lobby. www.willistower.com

Chuck E Cheese: Located in Naperville. Features pizza and games (and some rides) in a carnival
atmosphere. Eating area includes animated animal show.
McDonalds: The McDonalds at 445 Roosevelt Rd. in Glen Ellyn has a soft play area ideal for toddlers. The
McDonalds at 2175 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Wheaton has a terrific indoor playland.
Pilot Pete's: Located in Schaumburg at the Schaumburg Airport. This restaurant overlooks the runway at the
Schaumburg Airport. Watch small planes take off and land during your meal. Be sure to request a table near the

Children's Gardens at the Morton Arboretum: A premiere destination and a must-see for young children
in Chicagoland. Tip: bring an extra change of clothes for kids as they often get wet while splashing in small

Door County, Wisconsin: Five hours north on the peninsula bordered by Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay
to the west. Wisconsin's premiere destination - natural beauty, quaint shops, bed-and-breakfasts, camping,

the way. There's an indoor water park in Sheboygan and Green Bay boasts Bay Beach - picnicking, carnival rides

Galena, Illinois: Two-and-a-half hours west. A quaint town on the Mississippi - there's something to do for
everyone from splendid shopping, to trolley rides through the historic town, to cruises on the Mississippi or

Indiana Dunes State Park/Michigan Dunes State Park: One-and-a-half to three hours depending on traffic and
destination - Indiana dunes are a half hour closer, but Michigan dunes offer beauty unobstructed by the Gary,
Indiana steel industry. Great places to spend the day or to camp overnight - impressive dunes and Great Lake
