This information sheet tells you about a study which is being conducted by the King’s Centre for Military Health Research at King’s College London. If you would like to know more about the study, or have any questions, please call Sarah or one of the researchers on 020 7848 5674. We are a team of researchers based at King’s Centre for Military Health Research at King’s College London. We are conducting a study to look at the impact on children of having a father in the military. We would like to invite you to participate in our study. Before you decide if you would like to take part, please read this information sheet carefully and talk about it with your family and friends if you want to. Your participation is entirely voluntary. What is the purpose of the study? The purpose of this study is to help understand the pluses and minuses of military life on the well-being of the children of UK Service personnel. These data will help policy makers and service providers to provide for the needs of children of military personnel, particularly during and after deployment. We have support from SSAFA, the Army Families Federation and the Royal British Legion. Letters of support from each of these charities can be viewed on our website: www.kidstudy.co.uk Why have I been chosen? We are inviting young people who have a father serving in the military (or whose father has served in the military in the past), to take part in our study, and we hope to have around 1200 young people take part. Do I have to take part? No. It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you decide to take part, you are free to withdraw from the research at any time and without giving a reason. To withdraw from the study you will need to call us on 020 7848 5674 or send an email to kids-study@kcl.ac.uk. What will happen to me if I am happy to take part? If you are happy to take part and are satisfied with the explanations from the research team, you will be asked to confirm you agree to take part in the study (a consent form). We will ask you to answer some questions about your feelings and about your experience of having a father in the military. You can chose how you would like to take part. You can either answer the questions by ticking boxes on an online survey, or one of our team will call you at your home and ask you the questions over the phone at a time that suits you. The questionnaire will take about 20 minutes of your time. You will receive a £5 Amazon voucher to say thank you for your time. If you want to take part using the internet you can do so straight away by going to www.kidstudykids.co.uk. You’ll be asked to enter your Participant Number which is________________. If you decide to have a phone interview, in a small number of phone interviews we will ask permission to tape the interview. This is purely as a means of testing to make sure that all the interviewers are working in the same way during the study. The tape of the interview will not be labelled with any personal information such as your name or date of birth, and it will be listened to only by one other member of our research team. If you are one of the randomly chosen interviews we request to tape we will ask for your consent before we start the interview. You can say no if you don’t want to be taped. If you agree to be taped, you can ask for the tape to be destroyed, at any time after the interview. How do I claim my £5 voucher? After you have completed the questionnaire (online or over the phone) and returned your signed consent form to us, we’ll send you the £5 Amazon voucher code by email or post to say thank you for taking part. What are the possible benefits of taking part? We hope that you will enjoy talking to us or doing the survey on-line. Your contribution is going to help others. This study will help us to find out what it is like to have a Dad in the military. We will be able to use this information to further understand how we might help other young people in the future who also have dads who are in the military. This research project is funded by the United States Department of Defence.
