IB/AP Biology Summer Assignment Please Read EVERYTHING (consider it a grade) Hello Future AP/IB Biology Class, How’s it going? I know you have a lot to think about at the end of this year, with finals and all that stuff. But I wanted to give you your summer assignment. As I’m sure you have heard this class intense, but if you put in the work you will succeed, that is a promise… the flip side of that is if you don’t do the work you will not succeed. This is a college level course so expect college level responsibility and work. To help you guys gear up for next year and to get your brains on track, I wanted to let you know a couple of things; st th 1 - The textbook we will be using is called Biology by Campbell (9 edition) in addition to HL Biology for the IB Diploma by Damion. Please check out both of these books from the book room before you leave for summer break. Remember to bring your ID (cover them and treat them nicely as they are both very pricey to replace). nd 2 - You will cover our ECOLOGYunit by yourself this summer. All the assignments that I have given you are designed to help you learn and understand the major concepts of Ecology. There will be questions for you to answer and videos for you to watch and take CORNELL style notes on. You will be tested on the information you REVIEWED over the summer nd on the 2 day of class, and we will be spending the first 2 weeks of class performing labs and investigations using the knowledge you will gain WITH THIS SUMMER ASSIGNMENT. Please realize that you will need to READ the chapters assigned to you. YOU MUST BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INFORMATION and skimming just doesn’t do it. rd 3 - You are ALL REQUIRED TO TAKE A TEST AT THE END OF THE YEAR! IB or AP… there is a reson you are here, and those tests are our goal. If you don’t sign up for a test, I will give you a final that is an AP/IB Test…exactly what everyone else is getting out of school to take, and that grade will count (Financial problems? There are all sorts of scholarships to help so don’t use that as an excuse). th 4 - STOP PROCRASTINATING NOW… it steals your opportunities for success and robs you of your potential. So try and break those bad habits this summer, and don’t get too lazy on me. I want you to know that I expect great things from you all next year and I will do everything I can to help you succeed. But as always the choice lies with you, I can’t make you learn, and I can’t make you succeed, I can only present you with opportunity. So the choice is yours. What are you going to do this year… ADPAT, MIGRATE OR DIE? This summer assignment has been designed to: Introduce you to Ecology through non-classroom methods of learning to prepare you for inquiry based investigations (LABS). We will be performing the first 2 weeks of school. We are going to spend a lot of time together next year, so it’s best if I get a head start on learning a bit about you. Also we will use the Internet and the Web a lot next year for this course, so let’s get you used to communicating with me via e-mail. Your first digital assignment is to successfully send me an e-mail. Due date: Tue., June 29, 2010 Draft an e-mail to me following these rules: a. Use clearly written, full sentences. Do not abbreviate words like you’re texting with a friend. Use spell check! This is a professional communication like you would have with a college professor, so let’s practice for your rapidly nearing future! b. Address it to me at: sspilsbury@hbuhsd.edu c. Make the Subject: “AP Bio: Introduction of <Insert Your Name Here>” (Do not include the quote marks or the brackets, just the words) d. Begin the e-mail with a formal salutation, like “Ms. Spilsbury,” or “Dear Ms. Spilsbury,” e. Now introduce yourself in PARAGRAPH FORMAT (your name) and tell me a little bit about yourself, like: • What do you like to do (hobbies, sports, music, interests, etc.)? • Do you have a job? • Tell me a little bit about your family (Mom? Dad? Guardian? Siblings? Pets?) What do your parents do for a living? • Was there anything that you liked about your earlier biology class? • What was the last book you read for fun? • What are you looking forward to the most in AP Biology? • What are you most anxious about in AP Biology? • Anything else you think I should know…. Anything? f. End the e-mail with a formal closing: “Cordially”, “Sincerely”, “Warm regards”, etc. and add your name as if you signed a letter. THIS SHOULD BE A FORMAL LETTER, WITH ALL THE FORMAL FORMATTING THAT GOES ALONG WITH A FORMAL LETTER! ASSIGNMENT #2 Sign up for Remind 101 texting service.
