Course Description: MAT 1033, Intermediate Algebra, is a 3 semester-hour college credit course that may be
applied towards a degree as elective credit. Since it is considered a “bridge” course, MAT 1033 cannot be
applied towards the 6 hours of general education or Gordon Rule requirements in mathematics. MAT1033 is a
prerequisite to MAC 1105, College Algebra. The purpose of the course is reinforcement and development of
algebra skills needed for further study in mathematics. Topics include operations with polynomials and rational
expressions, radicals, rational expressions, rational exponents, linear and quadratic equations, linear
inequalities, and applications.
Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Factor positive integers
into products of primes. 2. Simplify algebraic expressions. 3. Recognize the order of operations in algebraic
expressions and equations. 4. Manipulate rational expressions. 5. Convert between standard and scientific
notation. 6. Add, multiply, and divide polynomials. 7. Factor monomials from polynomials, factor trinomials,
and use the special factoring formulas. 8. Simplify expressions involving radicals, rational exponents, and
absolute value. 9. Set up and solve word problems. 10. Solve linear, quadratic, and radical equations. 11. Solve
linear inequalities. 12. Complex numbers.
Required Material: Intermediate Algebra, by Carson fourth edition with MyLabsPlus access code, a total of
four 8.5”X11” blue books for each test and the final exam. The electronic version of this textbook is included
with the MyLabsPlus access code. Non-graphing calculator for use in the MALL.
Note: Only TI-30XA will be supplied on tests.
Academic Honesty: All students are required to abide by the Academic Honesty Guidelines. We must develop,
sustain and protect an academic environment of honesty, trust, and respect. Please read and understand all
policies listed in http://integrity.sdes.ucf.edu/, http://www.goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu *. The Z Designation will
be used in cases of academic dishonesty. Please see: http://www.z.ucf.edu/ for complete details.
Homework and Quizzes: All assignments will have posted due dates and these due dates will not be
extended, so please plan accordingly. 24 hour a day Pearson technical support is at 1-888-561-9110.
MALL Hours: The MALL is an integral part of your learning experience that requires minimum of 3 hours of
MALL time during the week. Students with >=80% on the weekly quiz will need only 2 hours of MALL time per
week. MALL grades are 100 or 0. Note: Be proactive and reach 80% mastery early otherwise complete
minimum 3 hours for full credit. Rule: 15 minute-rule: You earn 0 minutes if your visit is less than 15 minutes.
iClicker Policy & Procedures: iClicker 2 response system is used in class. Please have your iClicker 2 in class
and registered at www.iclicker.com/registration by the second class meeting. Use your NID (two letters and six
numbers, not PID) as your student ID number. Any zeros earned after the first class will not be retroactively
changed.
Test Dates**: There will be three tests throughout the semester and a comprehensive final exam. They will be
administered in the MALL and it well be your responsibility to register for them through
www.ucf.mylabsplus.com
Test 1: 2/8-2/12
Test 2: 2/29-3/4
Test 3: 4/4-4/8
Final Exam: 4/28-5/4
**Dates and times will vary based on course enrollment.
• Imperative: All tests are scheduled through the online scheduling system. It is imperative that you
register for all tests. Registration window open and close dates are as follows:
• Test 1: 2/1-2/7
Test 2: 2/22-2/28
Test 3: 3/28-4/3
Final Exam: 3/28-4/27
• It is recommended you make your test reservations as soon as possible. After the close dates,
scheduling can be done on a space-available basis only, SUBJECT TO LIMITED AVAILABILITY.
***Withdrawal Deadline: Wednesday, March 23, 2016
Required Academic Activity: As of fall 2014, all faculty members are required to document students' academic
activity at the beginning of each course. In order to document that you began this course, please complete the
following academic activity by the end of the first week of classes, one hour MALL orientation in MSB241, or
as soon as possible after adding the course, but no later than Friday, January 15, 2016 5:00 pm EDT. Failure to do
so may result in a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid. We also use your required academic activity
score as class activity 1 score.

The official method of contact is Knights
email, always include your full name,
NID, Math section number (not class
meeting time). Grade discussion must
be in person (per UCF policy grades
cannot be emailed).
The student’s grade average will be calculated using all
three options (a, b and c) and the highest average will be
used to determine the students’ final grade.
- Homework and quiz assignments are posted in MyLabsPlus www.ucf.mylabsplus.com. You must earn
75% on a homework to access related quiz (75% or better on hw1 to access quiz 1…etc).
- Class activity will be your iClicker2 responses in class. Note: Responses on paper will not be graded. The
Students must take the final exam and the
final is comprehensive.
use of more than 1 iClicker2 by one student is cheating.
-MALL is the required 3 hours per week.
Note: At least your lowest Homework grade, lowest quiz grade, lowest MALL activity grade, and lowest class
activity grade will be dropped prior to calculating your course average.
Accessibility Related Accommodations: It is my goal that this class be an accessible and welcoming experience
for all students, including those with disabilities that may impact learning in this class. If anyone believes the
design of this course poses barriers to effectively participating and/or demonstrating learning in this course,
please meet with me (with or without a Student Accessibility Services (SAS) accommodation letter) to discuss
reasonable options or adjustments. During our discussion, I may suggest the possibility/necessity of your
contacting SDS (Ferrell Commons 185; 407-823-2371; sds@ucf.edu) to talk about academic accommodations.
You are welcome to talk to me at any point in the semester about course design concerns, but it is always best
if we can talk at least one week prior to the need for any modifications.
Make-up Policy: Make-up tests will be given for legitimate reasons recognized by the university. To take a
make-up exam, you have to obtain permission from your instructor ahead of time.
Mathematics Assistance and Learning Lab (MALL) Policies and Procedures, http://mall.cos.ucf.edu/ It is the
student’s responsibility to read, understand and follow policies.
