provide an initial A-Z reference source to all Residential

Choosing a care home
Step one: Understand your
needs
There are many different types
of care homes, ranging from
homes which provide
specialised nursing or dementia
care to others which simply
offer a safe and comfortable
new home for people who may
need a little assistance with
everyday life.
Which one you choose will
obviously depend on the level
of care required. Most homes
will work with the person
entering care to undertake a
full care assessment, often with
input from family or friends,
social workers, care managers
or GPs.
Understanding the type of
care you need is an
important first step in
finding a care home that is
right for you.
Searching for the right care
home is not something any of
us do every day. Often when
the time does come it can be
quite stressful for all involved.
Here is some guidance on the
factors you might want to
consider in your search for a
care home.

care required and the location
you can start to develop a
shortlist of homes.
Step three: Check on quality
standards
At this stage you should also
take some time to check third
party reviews of some of the
care homes you may be
considering. The established
independent regulator for care
homes in England is called the
Care Quality Commission. They
undertake regular inspections
of all care homes to ensure they
meet government standards
and help identify any areas of
concern.

Once you have shortlisted a
number of homes, it is well
worth the time to visit each of
them to look around, meet the
manager, speak to staff and
residents and get a feel for life
within that home.
Just like family homes, care
homes differ considerably in
character and atmosphere and
it is important to find an
environment in which you or

your loved one feels
comfortable. This is about
personal choice and a visit to
the home will enable you to get
a feel about everything from
the care home team and how
they approach care to the
general buzz and atmosphere
of a home.
When you do find the right
care home, moving in can be a
start of a positive new life.
Many Residents take up new
hobbies or are able to rekindle
interests that weren't possible
without the help of friendly and
supportive staff. They make
new friends and learn new skills
which enable them to live
happy and fulfilling lives.

Broomy Hill Nursing Home
40 Bedroom care community, supporting elderly
people who are cognitively and physically compromised.
Broomy Hill is situated in a pleasant residential area in
the historic City of Hereford. Broomy Hill caters for elderly people living with Dementia and Mental Health
Issues. You are welcome to call or visit at any time for
viewing or support.
Person Centred Care
All Residents, with their families and Key Workers are
encouraged to develop a plan of care which reflects
their needs and wants. This enables the staff to support
the Resident in all their activities of daily living and
enhance their quality of life.
Facilities
We have a well-equipped Hairdressing Salon which
operates two days a week.
Social Therapists who work both with small groups and
individuals. They also plan activities and home entertainment which can be enjoyed by a few or many.
The Garden, though small, is accessible.
All religious denominations can be catered for.
Meals are freshly prepared and much of the cooking is
homemade. A variety of diets can be catered for. We
also have a good laundry service.
We also arrange regular visits from other Health Professionals, including the optician, dentists and chiropodist. The GP visits every week.
Aim
Broomy Hill aims to create an environment in which both
residents and staff share a sense of community and ownership. Standards of care and humanness are reflected in
the atmosphere and willingness for each to support the
other, creating an environment of friendship trust and
openness.
Supporting those living with Dementia and
Mental illness
Registered nurses and care assistants, selected for their
skills, offer a twenty-four hour service of care to all residents, based on the individual needs of each Resident.
