THE WALDORF SCHOOL OF BALTIMORE
EDUCATES AND INSPIRES CHILDREN
TO THINK, FEEL AND ACT WITH DEPTH,
IMAGINATION AND PURPOSE.
Last school year was very productive for the Waldorf School of
Baltimore. On behalf of the Board of Trustees I am pleased to share
several new initiatives created to enhance the curriculum, expand
current programming and fulfill the school’s mission to educate
children to think, feel and act with depth, imagination, and purpose.
Under the guidance of Board Member Fredye Gross, the
Development Office introduced “Windows into Waldorf.” These
meticulously planned one-hour tours gave visitors the opportunity
to see firsthand how a Waldorf education instills a lifelong thirst
for learning. To keep abreast of trends in the academic world, an
Information Technology Committee was formed. The Buildings
and Ground Committee was reconstructed to ensure robust
stewardship of our beautiful campus, ensuring that it inspires and
shelters the Waldorf community.
VISION STATEMENT
STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION
The vision of the Waldorf School of Baltimore is to build a foundation
for success and integrity. We seek to send into the world confident
young people who will lead a life of purpose and direction. We are
guided in our work by the pioneering insights of philosopher and
educator Rudolf Steiner.

We accomplish this by:
• Fostering intellectual, artistic and spiritual growth;
•P
roviding a quality comprehensive Waldorf education within a fully
developed campus;
With a sharp and focused eye towards the future, a revised Board of
Trustees nominating committee was formed. The group crafted a
new performance evaluation to foster board member accountability.
Other Board accomplishments include creation of a tripartite
leadership team consisting of Academic, Administrative and
Advancement department heads. The strategic plan titled “Road
Map for the Future” was updated to outline long-term growth and
sustainability goals. Fiduciary responsibility yielded a milestone of
particular note, the school paid off the mortgage.
•M
aintaining a financially secure school with a faculty and staff
committed to professional development and excellence;
Support for the Annual Fund continued to reflect the generosity of
Waldorf families, friends and alumni. For the ninth year in a row
there was 100% participation by the Board of Trustees, Collegium,
faculty and staff. Class participation was high as well. In addition, the
school received restricted gifts supporting scholarships, professional
development, art, music, sports uniforms, green initiatives and other
restricted gifts.
James Denzler
President
The Annual Waldorf Fall Celebration commemorated the school’s
41st year, recognized longtime staff members, and gave a toast to
a bright, productive future. Linda Zandler, Carol Steil, Charlotte
Landgraf, Noris Friedman, and Edna Emmet were honored for
their years of hard work and service.
2012/2013 saw the introduction of new programs and professional
training designed to improve STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) education and bolster the school’s
academic stature. A middle school environmental block was
developed and implemented to increase student understanding
of the human body’s relationship to water, plants and transportation. In the Spring, the school hosted Sensible Science, a teacher
education program that drew attendees from around the country.
For me, the academic year was a reminder of the school’s resiliency
as an institution and the dedication and resolve of our community.
The new structure was lauded by both AIMS (Association of
Maryland Independent Schools) and AWSNA (Association of
Waldorf Schools of North America) when the school achieved
reaccreditation in 2012. The Directors of Academics, Advancement,
and Administration proved themselves effective in responding to
the objectives put forth by the school community and the Board
of Trustees.
As the school year progressed, the critical goals established by the
Board for fund raising, enrollment, and academic excellence
required an increased amount of effort on the part of staff and
volunteers alike. Sadly, some of our leadership team decided to
leave the tripartite. We sincerely appreciate the energy, good will,
and service they gave to the school. They will be greatly missed.
I can say with great pleasure and admiration that the Board did not
hesitate to take action when needed. As a result, the Board was able
to finish the year with an updated, improved organizational
structure and a fresh highly qualified leadership team ready to serve
the Waldorf Community.
It has been a great privilege to have led the Board for the last two
years. I am therefore proud to present to you the 2012/2013 Waldorf
School of Baltimore Annual Report.

James Denzler

roviding a quality comprehensive Waldorf education within a fully

With a sharp and focused eye towards the future, a revised Board of
Trustees nominating committee was formed. The group crafted a
new performance evaluation to foster board member accountability.
Other Board accomplishments include creation of a tripartite
leadership team consisting of Academic, Administrative and
Advancement department heads. The strategic plan titled “Road
Map for the Future” was updated to outline long-term growth and
sustainability goals. Fiduciary responsibility yielded a milestone of
particular note, the school paid off the mortgage.
•M
aintaining a financially secure school with a faculty and staff
committed to professional development and excellence;
Support for the Annual Fund continued to reflect the generosity of
Waldorf families, friends and alumni. For the ninth year in a row
there was 100% participation by the Board of Trustees, Collegium,
faculty and staff. Class participation was high as well. In addition, the
school received restricted gifts supporting scholarships, professional
development, art, music, sports uniforms, green initiatives and other
restricted gifts.
