This has been done because many enlisted but were rejected just because of the colour of their skin. There are several that were rejected due to other reasons such a ‘Medical unfitness’, ‘Unsuitable physique’, ‘Unlikely to make an efficient soldier’, etc. However, they have been included because not only is this a roll about total Indigenous enlistment, but their rejection may, in reality, not have been for the reason given. Some for example, were rejected for ‘Unsuitable physique – Aboriginal’. On checking the records of one man so rejected, it was found he had a body mass index of approximately 20, which is well within the normal range (15 – 25). This roll is not complete and probably never will be. Enlistment papers usually carried no reference to race. Many enlisted under false names and places of birth in order to avoid the provisions of the Defence Act or the unwanted attention of Protectors of Aborigines. There is also the sad fact that Aboriginal communities suffered greatly from the fatal effects of epidemics such as Spanish influenza and many oral histories may have been lost as a result. Every effort has been made to guarantee the accuracy of this nominal roll, either through direct observation of confirmatory evidence, cross referencing from different sources, or evidence from relatives. The great majority of entries are guaranteed correct. However, some entries represent at best an intelligent choice using the available information. It is the nature of history to be self-correcting and to grow by the efforts of others; therefore additions as well as corrections are both invited and very welcome. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This nominal roll is the result of ongoing research by many people. Principal contributions include nominal rolls: supplied by the 1931 and 1932 Reveille journals of the New South Wales branch of the Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airman’s Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA); the State Library of Queensland; The National Indigenous Times; the photographic record by Frances Rhodes; and the Master’s thesis of Rod Pratt. Individual researchers who have made valuable contributions include David Huggonson, Bob Hall, Chris Coulthard-Clark, Doris Kartinyeri, Garth O’Connell, Rod Pratt and Lindsay Watson. Every entry in this roll has been confirmed from files held either at the National Archives of Australia website, or the Australian War Memorial. I would like to thank the following people and organisations for their help in getting this nominal roll to its current stage of completion: Auntie Bonny Costa; Anna Shnukal; Major Murray Nelson; Duncan Johnston, Auntie Ada Simpson and the Cherbourg Aboriginal Council; Ms Janine Schmidt and the University of Queensland Library; Andrew Walker and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy section of the Qld. Department of Communities; Dr Ian Lilley and Michael Williams of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit of the University of Queensland; Frances Rhodes; Sue Summers and the Cape Barren Island Aboriginal Association; staff of the National Archives of Australia; and Garth O’Connell and the Australian War Memorial. Thanks must also go to Kurbingui Youth Development and the Department of Employment and Training for financing and undertaking the printing of this Roll. To all those who provided information on their relatives to allow their names to be included in this nominal roll also goes a very grateful thanks. I would particularly like to thank David Huggonson and Bob Hall who not only provided me with information and advice, but also with the inspiration to begin and continue with this work. I believe that a great debt of gratitude is owed by the Indigenous community to these two men in particular who allowed them to enjoy the pride that is rightly theirs due to the military contribution of their ancestors. If I have forgotten to mention the name of any person or group that has also provided assistance, may I now offer them my thanks and my most humblest apologies. Finally, I am a migaloo; a whitefella. This is my way of saying ‘Sorry’. Regt No. -- Regimental Number – the identification number issued to each enlisted man. Officers at this time did not have one. On enlistment each soldier was given a temporary number prefixed by a letter indicating the state of enlistment, eg Q19670. On posting, they were then given a number by their unit. At first, each unit had their own numbering beginning from zero. In the first AIF, there may have been well over a hundred soldiers holding a regimental number such as 757. If reposted to another unit which already had that number in use, the soldier’s number was appended with a letter, eg 757C. From the formation of GSR in 1917, a single numbering system began that started from 1 and ran consecutively thereafter. Rfts -- Reinforcements. To replace casualties, each unit received more men sent over in batches called reinforcements, eg 20th Reinforcements to the 11 LHR. It also doesn’t include a wound that didn’t receive medical attention, ie, the soldier remained on duty in the trenches after receiving a minor wound. WO -- Warrant Officer. An enlisted man that holds one of either two ranks, WO1 OR WO2, that are above that of the rank of sergeant, but below that of a proper officer. He was one of a fighting patrol of seven and at one stage moved out alone in full view of the enemy and rushed a post and captured three prisoners. His work was consistently good during the whole operation and was a firm example to his comrades”. 792 Pte William Allan Irwin DCM London Gazette No 31186; 14th February 1919, p 2422 Commonwealth of Australia Gazette; No 75, 17th June, 1919, “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations at Road Wood on 31st Aug, 1916. Singlehanded, and in the face of heavy fire, he rushed three separate machine gun nests, capturing guns and crews. While rushing a fourth, he was severely wounded. His irresistible dash inspired the whole of his company.” 2101 Pte William James Albert Jonas MID Mentioned in General Sir Douglas Haig’s despatches of 16th March,1919 London Gazette No. 31448; 11th July 1919, p8831. During an attack on the village of Bony, on the 30th September, 1918, several bombing parties were held up by heavy Machine Gun and Trench Mortar fire. Corporal Knight handled his Lewis Gun Section with great skill and worked forward to a suitable position, he then placed his gun in position, handed over to No. 1 and proceeded M.G.C. to push forward and reconnoitre the enemy position. This necessitated moving over country which afforded no cover, other than shell holes. for a distance of 200 yards. This was carried out in broad daylight and in full view of the enemy lines and under Heavy Machine Gun, Trench Mortar and Artillery fire. In spite of difficulties he succeeded in reaching a position from which he located several Machine Guns and Trench Mortars, which were at the time playing on our position. He then returned to our lines with the valuable information which he had obtained and artillery assistance was brought to bear with success on the positions indicated.” 105 LCpl William Albert Knight MM London Gazette No. 30498; 28th January, 1918, p1403. These men were continually moving to and from Company and Battalion Headquarters under intense H.E. artillery barrage. The telephone lines were being continually broken, and the only method of communication was then by messenger. They showed an utter disregard of their own safety, and an admirable contempt for danger, and it was entirely owing to their self-sacrifice the operations were so well supported by our own artillery and that Battalion and Brigade HQ were so closely in touch with progress of operations. Our losses in messengers were very heavy. There were several instances of these messengers being blown up by H.E. shells exploding near them, and some of them were rendered semi-unconscious from shell shock, but after a short rest returned to their dangerous work.” 3603 Pte William Reginald Rawlings MM London Gazette No 31061; 11th December, 1918, p14669 Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No 36; 14th March, 1919, p427. “At Morlancourt on night 28/29th July, 1918, During the attack on enemy system this soldier had the responsible position of first bayonet man in a bombing team which worked down the enemy C.T, routed the enemy and established a block in the trenches. Pte Rawlings displayed rare bravery in the performance of his duty killing many of the enemy, brushing aside all opposition and cleared the way effectively for the bombers of his team. His irresistible dash and courage set a wonderful example to the remainder of the team.” 5476 Raymond Charles Runga MM London Gazette No 31338; 13th May, 1919, p6060. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette, No 109; 15th September, 1919, p1368. “For conspicuous gallantry on 23rd August, 1918 at Herleville Wood near Poucaucourt. When the left portion of his Company came under exceptionally heavy machine gun fire from a wood in front, Pte Runga, taking charge of a small party dashed forward to the wood and succeeded in capturing two hostile machine guns and the crews of 16 men. On another occasion he rushed forward alone over 70 yards of ground without cover and despite point blank machine gun fire succeeded in bombing the enemy from the communication trench, thus enabling the remainder of the platoon to continue their advance. This latter feat was a heroic example of utter disregard of personal safety and the desire at all costs to worst the enemy, any man of whom with one shot calmly aimed would have killed him.” 5459 LCpl Harry Thorpe MM London Gazette No. 30431; 14th December, 1917, p13200. Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 2nd May, 1918, p1038. “Near Ypres on 4/5th October, 1917, L/Cpl Thorpe displayed great courage and initiative in mopping up enemy dugouts and pill boxes. In the capture of battalion objectives, he was conspicuous for his courage and leadership, handling his men with skill and materially assisting his company commander. By his splendid example and disregard for all danger he inspired those under him.” 4911 Pte Frank Stewart MID Mentioned In General Sir Douglas Haig’s despatches of 16th March, 1919. This could be because: a search has been made and no records found; the surname is fairly common and it has proven impossible to locate the required record; the soldier concerned may have enlisted under a false name; or the name has been incorrectly reported. The latter is quite common. Some histories have entered in their World War One roll the names of World War Two soldiers by mistake. The list given by the Qld Protector of Aborigines in the 1931 Reveille article appears to have several repetitions and misspelled names. This list is provided in the hope that others might come along and solve the mystery of these entries.
