Course Objective : this course gives an overview of how accounting information is used in the
management of an organization. The course focuses on three areas: (1) product costing; (2) use of
accounting information in decision making; and (3) use of accounting information in management
performance evaluation.
Prerequisite: ACG 2021C
Required Materials: Demski, Joel, Managerial Uses of Accounting Information (Kluwer Academic
Publishers, 1997 or 2001, paperback); ISBN: 0-7923-9847-5. All other materials will be made available
on the class website.
Laptop: To facilitate your study, a laptop is strongly recommended for the course. Laptops will be
allowed during both exams.
Course Routine : Lectures are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are readings and problems
assigned for each lecture. Both readings and problems should be completed prior to the respective lecture.
Evaluation: The course grade is based on homework, midterm exam, and final exam. Your final grade
will be approximately determined as follows:
Homework:
15%
Midterm exam: 35%
Final Exam:
50%
Total
100%
A subset of the assignment will be randomly collected every week as indicated in the schedule . You are
required to prepare your answer to each problem in separate sheet. No late submission will be accepted.
Both midterm and final exams are scheduled at times and locations set aside by the University, and have
priority over regular classes and exams scheduled at the same times. There should be little, if any, reason
for a valid conflict with these times. Each student is responsible to be present at these exams. If you feel
you have a valid conflict, notify Professor Lin, in person and in writing, at least 10 days before the exam
date.
Both exams are closed-book and closed-note exams. There will be no make-up midterm exam. If you
miss the midterm and if you notify Professor Lin based on the “10-day”rule and get permission, the
weight on the midterm would be transferred to the final exam. Otherwise, zero will be properly given as
the midterm score.
At the discretion of the instructor , an incomplete grade of “I” may be recorded for a student who (1)
misses the final exam; (2) is in good standing prior to the final exam; and (3) provides a valid and welldocumented excuse for missing the final exam 10 days before the exam date . Any such incomplete can be
1
resolved only by taking the make-up exam under Professor Lin’s administration. Failure to so will lead to
a zero on the final exam and a failing grade for the course.
The official University of Florida all-in-one photo identification card must be presented at both exams
with no exception.
Getting Assistance: The course is fast-paced and serious. Attending lectures is necessary. Keeping up
with assigned readings and assigned problems are essential. Your primary contact for assistant on the
course is the TA, Ms. Liang Fu (liang.fu@cba.ufl.edu). Ms. Fu’s office hour will be announced (in class).
The primary grader for the course is Mr. Michael Pensky (heypensk@ufl.edu). If you have difficulty with
the material, you should seek help during the office hours or before/after the lectures.
Academic Integrity: A scholarly community such as the University of Florida depends on openness,
mutual respect and honesty. The University’s Honor Code applies in all matters, and will be enforced
without limit or exception. Those who cannot abide by the Honor Code are simply not welcome. See
http://itl.chem.ufl.edu/honor.html.
Tentative schedule: Professor Lin reserves the discretion to change the schedule when it is appropriate.
