Introduction to
Math, Second
Language,
and Writing
Placement at UA
The UA Math, Second Language, and Writing Placement process is described in this guide. Each of these areas has a strict
set of rules that are used to place students. The overall purpose of our placement processes is to determine, based on your
background and current demonstrated ability, which Math, Second Language, and Writing courses are appropriate for you.
All students greatly benefit by review, either through a course or on their own. We want students to do well in our courses.
College courses are different from high school courses for many reasons, and placement is an important part of helping them
start out with the right foundation. Please note that placement into a particular course does not guarantee a passing grade.
Welcome to the Pre-Pharmacy Program!
“Pre-pharmacy” is the designation given to the period of study before a student’s admission to the PharmD, Doctor of
Pharmacy, or professional program at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. To be eligible for admission to the
PharmD program, you must complete required pre-pharmacy coursework with a competitive GPA.
Some students can complete these required units in two to three years as well as other admission requirements. Usually one
half of each admitted class has their undergraduate degrees. Candidates for the doctor of pharmacy program are selected on
a competitive basis. Students admitted to the UA College of Pharmacy spend four years completing the PharmD program.

Math Test:
Pre-Pharmacy Math Requirements:
All incoming freshmen students are required to take the UA Math
Placement test. If you did not take the UA ALEKS Online Math Placement
test, please do so as soon as possible through your Next Steps Center.
If you do not have an appropriate math placement test percentage, you
will not be able to register for Math or Science courses. Please consult
your Orientation schedule for Math advising times and locations. If you
did test, your test percentage is available in the back of your student
calendar on your Student Advising and Information Form.
Math courses at or below the Calculus I level require specific math
placement test scores for enrollment. Your major requires MATH 113
OR Calculus I (MATH 122A/B or 125). You can also use Calculus II
(MATH 129) if you prefer.
Retesting:
»» Chemistry 151, 152, 241a/243a, 241b/243b
Students who wish to retake the placement test will need to take a
proctored test by appointment through the UA Testing Office (520-6217589) or through an online proctoring service called ProctorU. There is a
retesting fee; see the Math website for more information. Retesting for
Fall 2012 registration must be done by August 28, 2012.
Transfer Credit:
Students with college-level math credits like AP, CLEP, or CC dual
enrollment credit should see a Math advisor. Out-of-state courses
must be evaluated through an online form available through
math.arizona.edu/placement/credits
Please note that students often repeat courses for which they already
have credit in order to be more successful at the UA. To speak with a Math
advisor please consult your orientation schedule for times and locations.
Science Requirements:
Eleven science lectures with lab courses are required for admission to
the College of Pharmacy:
»» MCB 181 R & L
»» ECOL 182 R & L
»» Physics 102/181 or calculus-based physics
»» MIC 205A & L
»» PSOI 201 & 202
»» additional science with lab.
Success in Mathematics at UA:
The placement process does not guarantee a passing grade in any
particular course. Many students can greatly increase their chances of
success in UA Math by taking a review course in order to build a stronger
foundation of fundamental skills. College math is different from high
school math, even though some topics are similar.
College math classes meet less often, incorporate little or no review, are
faster paced, and your overall grade is primarily based on exams. Most
of the learning is done by the student outside of class. Students need to
attend class, actively participate in class, keep up with homework, attend
instructor’s office hours and tutoring, and should expect to spend at least
two hours working outside of class for each hour spent in class.
Please Note:
and keep in mind–
Admission to the UA does not guarantee placement into a UA Math
course. Some students will need review through ALEKS learning mode,
Pre-Health Professions and Pre-Law are NOT
majors. For more information visit:
or a review course. All students are encouraged to review before

Second Language Placement
The Pre-Pharmacy program is not a
degree granting program, does not
require a second language, nor is
a language required for admission
to the College of Pharmacy. We DO
recommend however that students

College of Humanities 520.621.1048
pursue an undergraduate degree in
whatever area they are passionate about
while completing courses required for
admission to the College. For that reason
it’s wise to take the language placement
exam and complete a foreign language as
required by degree programs. For more
information speak with your advisor.
Writing Placement: Writing Program Overview
UA REQUIREMENTS: All students must complete a first-year composition
sequence. This will involve between three and seven (3-7) units, depending
on your placement.

How Students Are Placed Into English:
»» Writing placement scores are automatically
calculated when SAT/ACT scores AND overall
GPA are in the system, resulting in the vast
majority of incoming students being placed in
advance. Placements available by this score
calculation include ENGL 100, 101, and 109H.
Placement cannot be calculated if one of the
pieces of information is missing.
»» If the method above does not place students
into Honors English (ENGL 109H), an AP
score of 4 or 5, or IB score of 5, 6, or 7 can
replace the automatic score calculation.
Students must contact the Writing Program
to make the change.
»» Unofficial copy of college transcripts for
dual enrollment OR other college credit may
provide placement into 101, 102, or may

if any of the following apply to you
fulfill the writing requirement altogether.
Students must contact the Writing Program
to make the change.
»» Students missing a placement score who
are unable to produce any of the required
pieces of information above are required
to take the on-line placement exam:

Did you notify us about Dual Enrollment/
Transfer Credit or AP/IB Scores?
Although you may have sent this information to the University, there
is nothing in the system that triggers an automatic writing placement
update for registration. If you did not notify our office, now is the time
to speak to a Writing Placement Advisor.
Is this placement right for you?
If you believe that you have been placed in a course that does not reflect
your writing abilities, see a Writing Placement Advisor TODAY for information
regarding our placement diagnostic.

tape, or large print) please contact Stefanie Basij, (520) 621-1270.
