to congratulate you on your graduation!
All graduates from the Brooklyn Campus will gather on Saturday, May
23, 2015 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge for the
Ninety-sixth Annual Commencement Exercises.
I am sure that you are eager to learn more about your graduation
and all of the other Senior events so that you can make plans and
complete any requirements. This booklet provides very important
information about ordering academic attire; confirming your
attendance at the ceremony; hooding by alumni graduates of
SJC; guests with special needs; a graduation checklist; and Senior
Events. Please read carefully and observe deadlines for submitting
forms or requests.
If you have any concerns, or are in need of further information, please

Your graduation attire consists of an academic hood, black cap, black gown, and black tassel.
You can begin ordering online from Herff Jones beginning February 23, 2015
Deadline for ordering online is March 27th (late orders will be charged $75.00 to cover express

If you have your cap and gown from Freshman Investiture, you may wear them for graduation, but you
will need to order your hood. We will order the tassel for you. See page 5.
If you do not have a cap and gown or you want to get new academic attire, you must go online and
order from Herff Jones Company.

ACADEMIC HOOD: Before you receive your diploma, you will have your hood placed on your shoulders by a
previously designated member of the faculty. Hoods are lined in the College colors (gold and white) and
bordered with a color that indicates the wearer’s degree. They are as follows:

ALUMNI HOODING
Placing the academic hood on the graduates’ shoulders is a privilege reserved for the faculty.
This privilege, however, is extended to SJC alumni who are the parents, spouse or children of
the current graduate. If you have a parent, spouse, or child who is a graduate of St. Joseph’s College,
and you would like to be hooded by this person, please complete the form below and return it to the
appropriate office by March 27, 2015. Alumni will be seated on stage in academic attire which will
be paid for by the College.
Other Alumni relatives may participate in the academic procession as a member of the Alumni

You will be directed by the staff in regard to your
appropriate lineup area.
*GRADUATES who arrive after the procession has begun must report to
an usher behind the graduate seating area.
Tickets: At this time, due to the number of students graduating, each graduate will
receive 3 tickets. You may invite 3 people to graduation and each one (including
children) MUST have a ticket. Ushers will not allow anyone into the Grand Ballroom
that does not have a ticket; THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.
There will be over 350 graduates and their guests attending graduation. In order to
make this event as organized as possible, we ask that you please follow the directions
of College employees who will be dispersed throughout the lobby and foyer areas and
outside of the Marriott.
PERSONAL ITEMS: Please leave all personal items with family members—there
will not be a place to secure them. This includes cell phones!
PHOTOGRAPHS:
A professional photographer will be at the ceremony - Island Photography Your picture will be taken as you receive your diploma (and a commencement
portrait). The company will contact you sometime after graduation about purchasing
finished prints.

Parking in the area around the Marriott is very limited. We encourage you to use
public transportation. There is a municipal garage available.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
NO DIPLOMAS WILL BE AWARDED UNLESS ALL FINANCIAL
OBLIGATIONS TO THE COLLEGE HAVE BEEN MET. THIS INCLUDES:
tuition payments, parking fines, graduation fee, video-course tapes, team uniforms, or
any other outstanding college debts.
Distribution of diplomas will take place following the ceremony.
**You must have your SJC ID card in order to pick up your diploma.
FINANCIAL AID EXIT INFORMATION: If you have received one or more Federal
Stafford Loans Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans as an undergraduate/graduate
student, you must have an exit interview before graduation. This is a federal
regulation and you must comply. St. Joseph’s has provided you with the opportunity to
satisfy the interview requirement on your own time on your computer. This address is
www.studentloans.gov. Financial Aid will receive an electronic confirmation that you
have successfully completed the interview. Exit interviews should be completed no
later than May 15, 2015. You can also schedule an in person exit interview session
here on campus.

5700.
GUESTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Reserved seating will be available for
individuals in wheelchairs or other assistive devices, and one guest. Please call Grisel
Goldman (718-940-5818) by May 14th to reserve a space, obtain additional
information, or arrange for other special needs. (Seating in these areas requires a
ticket.)
FAMILY HOODERS
By long standing tradition, this privilege is extended to Alumni parents, spouses, and
children. (Please see “Alumni Hooding” on page 6 of this booklet.)
DEGREE DISTRIBUTION: Those graduating in August 2014, January 2015 are
invited to pick up their degrees at the Registrar’s office which is located in Tuohy Hall
Room 209 beginning February 17th, 2015. All degrees will be distributed by the
Registrar’s Office. You must have your I.D.
PICKING UP DIPLOMAS AT COMMENCEMENT: Diplomas will be distributed
in the Legends Ballroom, for a half an hour, immediately following Commencement.
You will need to have proper photo identification available to pick up your degree.
You will not receive your degree if you do not have a college ID or driver’s license
available.
