A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
Lora Eichner
Justin Frese
With the guidance of the ever present Strategic Plan, dedicated Board and Committee volunteers, and committed, competent staff,
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley completed its 48th year of serving the youth of Sonoma with quality afterschool, athletic,
and summer programs. Designed to create positive opportunities for our youth to learn and succeed, the Boys & Girls Club is a
place that provides enrichment and academic support that, for many of our members, exists nowhere else in their lives.
The Boys & Girls Club continued a growth trend by opening new school sites at Dunbar Elementary and Altimira Middle School.
This expansion meets the increased need for after school programs, and is made possible primarily with increased grant funding
from California’s After School Education and Safety (ASES) program. With five sites operational at year end, the Boys & Girls Club
now serves more than 500 Sonoma youth each day, and in excess of 2,000 annually. Perhaps most importantly, it is not that the
scope of reach is so great, but that the quality of our programs continue to improve and meet the specific needs of our children
and the community.
The depth of our teen services grew significantly in 2010. College Bound, our program aimed at helping teens navigate the
obstacles that exist between them and their dream of continued education, grew significantly. Our goal in the 2010 – 2011 school
year was to have 40 teens enrolled in College Bound, each receiving individual case management and guidance. At the end of
December there were 60 teens enrolled and active in College Bound, a clear indication that another need in the Valley was being
filled by the Club. The impact is evident in what the teens tell us, here are a few:

Patti Peters
“I meet with my College Bound counselors regarding many topics. Through their hard work and dedication in helping their
students, I am on the right track in order to fulfill my goal of being ‘college bound.’” (Jeremiah, 12th grade)
E. Michele Samson
“This is my first year as a member of the College Bound Program and so far I love it. The program has assisted in helping me sign
up for SATs, sign-up for scholarships and EOP, but most importantly the program has helped me sign up for the right colleges.”
(Jeanette, 12th grade)
STAFF
The fact that, even during an incredibly challenging economic climate, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley manages to
not only remain viable, but to provide additional services to more youth is a testament to this community that believes in the
Boys & Girls Club’s ability to make a difference in the lives of so many children and their families.
We are grateful for your investment in the youth of Sonoma by supporting the work of the Boys & Girls Club. It is what allows
the Club to be a better place; for the kids, each of us, and the community.
Sincerely,
Dave Pier, Executive Director

“I think what
you guys are doing
is great. 25

students go to
the Club.”
— [Dave Neubacher,
El Verano 5th grade
teacher and BGC
Basketball coach.]
The Boys & Girls Club is the only place in the Valley that offers kids ages 6 to 18 safe, supervised,
state-of-the-art facilities where, every day after school, they can learn the skills they need to get
ahead in the world. The Club serves 500 kids each day of the week at five sites. That’s more than 2,000 kids
a year – 40% of the school age population here in Sonoma Valley.
While we provide unprecedented access to technology and training, we also cater to the most basic of needs.
We serve 5,500 meals and 50,000 snacks a year to kids who often won’t see another meal that day. Such is the
need: half the kids we serve are from families with household incomes below $28,000.
Because of all this, Club kids do better in school, are less likely to drop out, have improved social relationships
and lead healthier lives.

“We strongly
believe that the
Boys & Girls Club
helps shape the
future of Sonoma
Valley through
its many programs
that help our
youth learn,
succeed and
grow. The staff
and volunteers
provide an outstanding framework for our
young people to
build upon. We
are honored to
contribute to the
Club’s ongoing
development.”
