Position Description: SLS 1501 is designed to help first-year students make a successful transition into the university by developing academic, social, and personal skills that contribute to academic success. The SLS Peer Mentors are a valuable component to the SLS program! They serve as peer advisors, resources, and role models for first-year students by representing the Strategies for Success program, the Office of First Year Experience, and the University of Central Florida. Position Benefits: Past mentors take pride in making an impact on their students by helping them navigate successfully through their first year. Through training, SLS Peer Mentors will learn leadership and developmental skills that will benefit not only themselves, but also their SLS students. Such skills and other benefits may include: Teaching experience Public speaking experience A rapport with students Recommendation letters (contingent upon instructor) Assisting in the transition of first-year students Compensation: $200 stipend, with applicable taxes, to be paid at the end of the semester. Failure to uphold the responsibilities and requirements as outlined in the position description could affect your compensation amount, and/or lead to your dismissal from the program. Position Responsibilities: As a member of the SLS staff team: Maintain frequent communication with both the SLS Graduate Assistant and SLS Instructor. Attend all SLS Peer Mentor meetings, trainings, and class sections. Serve as an academic and social role model. Work closely with assigned SLS 1501 Instructor to develop course materials and activities. o Meet with assigned SLS 1501 Instructor regularly. Communicate accurate and timely information to students about academic resources and student services. Become familiar with the needs of first-year students. Be accessible and willing to assist with informational needs of students. Actively participate in SLS assessments, assignments, and evaluations. Adhere to the standards set forth by the Office of First Year Experience, Strategies for Success, and the University of Central Florida. Strategies for Success 2013 – University of Central Florida Minimum Requirements: Must be available to uphold the Peer Mentor position during: o Summer B 2013 term beginning on June 24, 2013 and ending on August 2, 2013. o Fall 2013 beginning on August 19, 2013 and ending on December 2, 2013. Minimum cumulative UCF GPA of 2.5 at time of application. This does not include course credit earned at other institutions. GPA will be verified. Full-time UCF student (no less than 12 undergraduate credit hours) enrolled in the semester. Your record must be free of violations within the Department of Housing and Residence Life and the Office of Student Conduct, including a clear status in regards to disciplinary probation. Conduct record will be verified. Exhibit leadership potential and a strong commitment to the mission of the Strategies for Success program. Agree to abide by professional and ethical standards of conduct, including following all university regulations and civil laws, from the point of selection through the end of employment.
