Orientation Program at a Glance
Our orientation program is designed to assist you—as an
incoming international student—adjust to life in the
United States and at Rutgers. The program covers a
wide range of topics in a variety of different formats
over the period of a week, and provides flexiblyscheduled opportunities every day to help you become
familiar with your new surroundings, to settle academic
and administrative matters, to learn about the many
resources and services available to you at Rutgers, and
—just as important to the adjustment process—to begin
forming friendships with other new and returning
international students.
The personalized environment of our program allows
you to interact closely and regularly with members of
our energetic and enthusiastic team of trained student
volunteers, and to learn from their experiences.
Throughout the week you will also have frequent
contact with Global Services staff members, all of
whom participate in various orientation program
sessions and events.
We hope and expect that by the end of orientation
week you will feel that you have accomplished a great
deal, that you have learned a lot about Rutgers, that
you have made some new friends, and that you are
ready and eager for classes to begin!
For students living on-campus:
Your Residence Life staff wants to meet you!
Please check for information in your rooms and
buildings for details on exciting programs and
opportunities to socialize, meet your Residence
Life staff, get to know more about on-campus
living, and just to unwind at the end of a busy
orientation day!
Welcome from the
Vice President for International
and Global Affairs
Dear Students,
Welcome to Rutgers! We are so happy
that you are joining us as part of the
Rutgers University family during this
exciting time of our global reach. As
our largest class of incoming
international students at Rutgers, you
are a historic group of students for our
university. I know you will do
phenomenal things during your time
with us.
Rutgers’ Centers for Global Advancement and International
Affairs is here to engage you in global conversations, offer
exciting programs and opportunities, and provide you with
assistance when you need it. The GAIA Centers advance the
university’s international mission through four pillars – Global
Education, Global Programs, Global Relations, and Global
Services – as well as Rutgers China Office. As a result, the GAIA
Centers are creating new opportunities for students, including
more types of interesting programming, such as our affiliation
with the United Nations Department of Public Information; new
Study Abroad as well as International Service Learning programs
in Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Asia; and expanded
services for international students. The GAIA Centers are also
working on innovative programs in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia,
and Liberia, as well as many new globally-focused initiatives here
on campus and around the world.
We hope that during the academic year you will have the
opportunity to join the many events held on campus, including
the wonderful workshops presented by the Center for Global
Services and the events offered as part of our Biennial Theme –
Global Health! Visit global.rutgers.edu to learn more about our
offices and our upcoming events this academic year.
We want Rutgers to be your home away from home – a
welcoming environment for you to learn and live comfortably.
The GAIA Centers are here to make your stay at Rutgers a
pleasant and productive one. We are always open to
suggestions on how we can make the experience better for our
international community, so feel free to contact us at global@
rutgers.edu.
Best wishes for the new school year!

the community, the state, and the world.
The university established the Centers for
Global Advancement & International
Affairs to work toward developing a
comprehensive, campus-wide set of
international initiatives and services, initiate
collaborative projects and strategic
partnerships around the world, and
expand students’ opportunities for
international study and research.
GLOBAL EDUCATION: As part of the GAIA
Centers commitment to expanding

departments, and other university units.
Our goal is to create community around
topics of global concern and to present a
variety of forums and opportunities for
learning within the university community.
Our programs are your programs, and we
look forward to your participation in oncampus events, programs growing out of
Rutgers’ affiliation with the United Nations,
and other programmatic initiatives with
global themes.
GLOBAL RELATIONS: Rutgers University
hosts many visitors from around the world
throughout the year, including international
government officials, researchers, faculty,
and administrators. It is the GAIA Centers’

demystify federal regulations as much as
possible for the constituencies we serve,
and to assist members of the
campus’ international community in the
cultural adjustment process.

Key to Symbols
This key is your guide to understanding the
meaning of the different symbols used in this
orientation program brochure. To provide you
with as much scheduling flexibility as possible,
we have arranged to offer many of our sessions
more than once during the week. The symbols
below will help you identify categories of sessions
and to select the ones that best meet your needs
and your personal schedule. Do not take these
symbols to mean you are restricted to these
particular sessions only, but rather, that these
sessions are specifically and ONLY for you.
