Humanities 112: The Modern World / TTH 9:30-‐10:50 Homework assignment due Tuesday, March 25th (no late or e-‐mailed work accepted & responses must be numbered and typed; 30 points). Reading assignments for Week 10 include the following: in your textbook 6, The Humanities: Culture, Continuity and Change read pp. 1383-‐1411, p. 1417-‐1418. In your Literature Study Packet read “We Wear the Mask” poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar (study questions p and poem p. 18) and “Of Our Spiritual Strivings” By W.E.B. DuBois (study questions p. 19, subject of our next reading presentation). All readings must be completed by Tuesday, March 25th. The following 5 homework questions are due as typed homework responses. Some are based on aforementioned readings, and two are based on music available on class blog. Listen to the following musical compositions available on the class blog tthhumanities112.blogspot.com Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 (considered Classical) Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (transition between Classical and Romantic era music) Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries (Romantic era) Debussy’s Claire de Lune (contemporaneous with Impressionism / Post-‐Impressionism.) Music – based homework questions: 1. Briefly describe each composition in terms of its mood, its pace, its structure (does it seem balanced, symmetrical, varied and irregular, etc?), texture (texture can be created by the layers of different musical instruments), and whether or not it has “dynamics” (sharp contrasts in volume) or other types of contrasts. Choose two of the compositions to compare and contrast to one another. 2. Compare the music of Claire de Lune (“Moonlight”) to the painting by Claude Monet Impression Sunrise (p. 1195 of book 5). Though one is a painting and one is a musical composition, you can consider them both in terms of mood, form (open or closed composition?) and the degree of contrast or lack of contrast within their form (are there volume or pace shifts in the music or is there a consistency? How can this be compared to the use of color or form or texture in the painting?) Textbook –based homework: American modern culture / THCCC 6 pp. 1383 – 1418 3. How does New York change in the years after World War I? (Provide at least two examples). Literature Study Guide homework, p. 18: “We Wear the Mask,” poem by Paul Lawrence Dunbar 4. What poetic techniques are used in this poem? Refer to your literary elements glossary
and identify at least two poetic formal elements.
