LABORATORY MANUAL Lab Manual: BIO 101 General Biology Laboratory Manual, Jo Wen Wu 2012-13 EVALUATION The maximum number of points per lab activity is 15. For every lab, a C equals approximately 10 points, a B equals 12 points and an A equals 13.5 points. See schedule for lab activities Quizzes: every lab will be evaluated by means of a quiz given at the beginning of the next lab meeting, quizzes are worth 10 points. There are study guides for every lab in the webpage provided above. Reports: 5 points per lab. You will turn in your lab exercise every week after you took the quiz for that topic. You will lose 1 point for each 10 minutes you are late/leave early without finishing the lab work for the day. You may also lose points for persistently talking during class, pre-labs that are incomplete, or lacking the required materials. Also, included in the participation is working together as a team and participating in the lab review, completion of the lab, and making sure your lab table and equipment are clean before leaving. Missed labs: Equal to getting a zero (0) for that day. Be aware that if you miss an activity, you still will have to take a quiz for the last lab you attended when you come to the following lab meeting. Dropped labs: Only one lab score will be dropped during the semester. If you miss more than one lab, you will start getting zeros for those days. Exams: There will be two lab exams worth 50 points each. The lab exam will be open notebook, so it is important to keep your notebooks current up to date. You will need a scantron 882 for the lab exams. See schedule for exam dates Field trips: There will be 1 field trip scheduled for this class. The field trip will meet during the scheduled lab time; this includes driving time to and from the field trip site. Some of the field sites have limited parking so ride sharing is recommended. Your field trip lab will be due the following week at the beginning of the class. Field trips are worth 10 points. Grades will be posted periodically in the class’s webpage using the last four (4) digits of your student ID. Be aware that you have to pass biology 101 lab with at least 65% of the points to pass the class. A letter D or F in the lab means then that you will not pass the class even if you score an A in lecture. Approximate Grade Scale 90 - 100% = A, 80 - 89% = B, 65 - 79% = C 55 – 64 % = D < 55 % = F CLASS POLICIES Attendance and Tardiness: Attendance is mandatory as absences in will lower your overall performance in the class. If a quiz is to be given at the beginning of the class and you are late, you will lose 1 pt for every 10’ you are late. Students who are late more than 30 minutes will not be allowed to participate of that day’s activity Cheating: Students caught cheating will receive a zero (0) in that exam or quiz. Situations that may be interpreted as cheating include looking at a classmate test instead of your own, talking to a classmate during exam’s time, or having a notebook open or any paper with materials related to the ongoing test. Be aware that there is no way you can make a zero up and that your final grade may be considerably lowered when averaging a test with score zero. Class withdrawal: According to the college catalogue, it is the responsibility of the student to file official withdrawals through the Admissions Office by designated deadlines to avoid being assigned a letter grade of A through F. Classroom safety: Thoroughly read and comply with the safety/disposal alerts written in the labs. Specific safety regulations and disposal procedures will be provided for each lab as are appropriate. No foods or beverages are allowed in the laboratory. Be sure to wash your hands before leaving the lab. Be aware of the location and operation of all emergency equipment in the lab. Late submission of materials: Students are expected to bring their lab manual to every lab meeting, late submission of lab worksheets or any other assignment will not be accepted. Make-up quizzes: If you are absent for a lab meeting and you miss the quiz for that day, you have to study for missed quiz for the following week of classes. You can take the quiz for the lab you did NOT attend if you want, but will not receive any points coming from the lab worksheet. Use of Electronic Equipment in the Classroom: During the class, the use of cell phones and other devices that potentially may create classroom distractions is NOT allowed (e.g., cell phones must be set on “silent”).
