Auto Bank Withdrawal .............................. Total .......................................................... A G E On this day, the 40th day of Christmastide, we recall the sacrifice given by Mary and Joseph in the Temple of Jerusalem for the first-born male in their family, Jesus. He is recognized by the elders, Simeon and Anna, who give thanks for seeing Jesus themselves before they die. Simeon tells Mary that Jesus is destined to be a sign so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare. After this they went home to Nazareth. Jesus grew up and God’s favor was with him. What are your secret thoughts and thanks? Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All rights reserved. To meet our budget, we need an average of $16,000.00 each week. GOOD SAMARITAN Special thanks to Keith VandenHeuvel! After a recent Tuesday RE Session, Keith noticed that a car belonging to one of our catechists had a flat tire. With wind chills far below zero (and without a hat) he put on the spare. People like Keith make our Christian community special - thanks again to him and to all who sacrifice and care for others. Luke 2:22 SUNDAY MORNING HOSPITALITY Do we give the Lord the first fruits of our time every week by attending Mass? Do we set an example for our children and grandchildren by attending Mass and joyously participating in the celebration of Mass each week? How do we know what God wants us to do unless we communicate with Him? Please join us for coffee and donut holes in Bona Hall after the 8:30 AM & 10:15 AM Masses. 3 N A T I V I T Y O F O U R L O R D P A R I S H PRESENTATION OF THE LORD G R E E N B A Y • P A G E 4 CELEBRATING 50 YEARS AS A FAMILY OF FAITH—1964-2014 is celebrated every February 2nd; this year it falls on Sunday. This feast has been named “Candlemas” or “Light Mass” because the symbol of candles and lights “are a sign of the divine splendor of the one who comes to expel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe radiant with the brilliance of his eternal light”. (Sophrainus, on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord). From the manger to Jerusalem, this feast flows from the Nativity narratives proclaimed weeks earlier and sets the stage for the Lent/Easter Season. Since this feast is on Saturday, we will bless any church and home candles at each weekend Mass. We invite you to bring your candles (put your name on them) and place them on the table at the front step of the altar. If you have candles from home that you want blessed, place them on this table (make sure you label it with your name). Also, there will be blessed candles available for you to purchase at $3.00 per pair. Thank you to all those who took part in Nativity’s 50th Anniversary Kick Off Lasagna Dinner and “Mass on the Ice” at the Arena. These events could not happen without all of you, our dedicated volunteers! We begin by thanking the 50th Anniversary Committee, especially, co-chairs, Carol Pichette and Judy Schroeder, and all the event leaders of the 50th Anniversary celebrations. Special thanks to our Lasagna Dinner chefs, Jim Herald and Jesse James Weiland; and their team of set up, kitchen helpers and servers; and the wonderful entertainment provided by the Ashwaubenon High School “Encore” Show Choir, directed by Teresa Schroepfer. Special thanks goes out to The Mass on the Ice volunteers: Dave Jelinek with the sound system; Michael Raught, Organist; Teresa Schroepfer, Choir Director; and all the outstanding choirs – Adult, Brass, Youth and New Life. Thank you to the Greeters, Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Sacristan, Altar Servers, Knights of Columbus (for hauling items to and from the Arena), Heid Music, piano; Ashwaubenon High School, Shelly Paul, Photographer; Tom Yungwirth, Video; Gary Paul, Signage/Trailer; Wayne Efferson, Worship Director, for the beautiful liturgy; Dcn. Mike Schmidt; our pastor, Fr. Jack Harper; the office staff; Breakfast Brunch Coordinator, Bill Orgeman; PMI Event Coordinators, Scott Boesch and Scott Conklin; and parking supervisor, Don Leurquin. BLESSING OF THE THROATS The Feast of St. Blasé is always celebrated on February 3rd. St Blasé was the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia (Turkey). Before dying as a martyr to the Christian faith, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since then, St. Blasé has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. We pray in a special way on this day for protection from afflictions of the throat and other illnesses. Since this feast is on Monday this year, Fr. Jack will give a general blessing of the throats over all the Faithful at the end of each Mass on the weekend of February 1st and 2nd. Thank you to everyone who attended these events. It is because of you that this is all possible. We thank you for your support. TO BOW OR GENUFLECT Now that the tabernacle, housing the Blessed Sacrament, has been moved forward in our church, several people have asked what the proper reverence should be when passing by it. This excerpt is taken from an article that appeared in the Compass in March 2011: Bowing is the proper sign of reverence to the Altar (when no tabernacle is near it) while genuflection (on the right knee) is reserved for God, we only genuflect to the body of Christ reserved in the tabernacle. (If in doubt, just look for the sanctuary light (Red), which is kept burning by the tabernacle whenever the sacred species is present.) So, as a sign of adoration and love for the Body of Christ, we should genuflect, if physically possible, when passing by the tabernacle. Thanks for asking! There will be many events scheduled this year to celebrate our important milestone of 50 years. Plans are moving right along with the year-long celebration. This is just the beginning of our many, upcoming events and we hope you are able to attend some or all of them. Watch future bulletins for details! VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BRUNCH Sunday, March 2nd A Volunteer Appreciation Brunch is scheduled for Sunday, March 2nd, after the 8:30 AM and 10:15 AM Masses in Bona Hall. Mark your Calendar! If you have done any volunteering here at Nativity within the past year or plan on volunteering, you and your family are invited to join us in this celebration. Thanks for all you've done, are doing, are about to do, will do later, have thought of doing or would like to do for Nativity Parish and the community. THANK YOU FOR THE ROSARIES Nativity received a heartfelt thank you from Fr. Terry LaCombe, the Command Chaplain for the Marine Corps in San Diego, California, for the box of rosaries we sent to the Marines and recruits in December. Fr. LaCombe says he receives many requests for rosaries and “with the rosary our men and women here can be reminded of the mystery of faith, praise God, concentrate on the mysteries, honor Mary and give thanks to Jesus for His birth, death and resurrection. What a blest people we are.” Before you leave Church today stop and pick up $crip to do your weekly shopping. 4 “Strokes - What They Are, How To Prevent Them & How To Treat Them” Presenter: Eric Dvorak M.D. Board Certified Physiatrist Bay Care Clinic 2nd FRIDAYS FOR SENIORS Friday, February 14, 2014 9:00 AM-11:00 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Social Hall Our morning will begin with 9:00 AM Mass in Church, followed by a Continental Breakfast and Presentation in the Social Hall. Paul is a contemporary Catholic Christian Inspirational Speaker, Musician, Composer and Recording Artist from Racine, Wisconsin. Theme of the Mission: “Igniting the Light of Christ Within You” Paul’s ministry teaches the listeners why and how they are already wired to succeed in building themselves and the church while discovering God’s purpose for their lives. He shares practical techniques people can use to increase their connection with the Presence of the Holy Spirit, the Risen Christ’s gift to His disciples. Sunday February 16th, 6:30 PM: “Connecting with the Light of Christ” Paul will tell us his story, his conversion from lukewarm-ness as a Catholic to a believer in miracles. He’ll discuss the True Presence! Then he’ll teach you about the miracle of you! Monday February 17th, 6:30 PM: “Experiencing the Light of Christ” Paul will teach us as Catholics to trust in God. He’ll share practical ideas on what we can do to break the mental cycles of anxiety, fear, doubt, worry, and guilt once and for all! Tuesday February 18th, 6:30 PM: “Living the Light of Christ” Learn the warning signs that show how we can be ‘imprisoned’, all those things and attitudes that limit our willingness and energy to live fully our Christian faith – the Light of Christ within you, no matter what happens to you. Wednesday February 19th, 6:30 PM: Youth Night Presentation, combining music and the spoken word. We can all grow in our relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ. As with all Paul’s spoken word presentations, he selects songs from his own music that will illumine the topics discussed and point towards solutions to your concerns. His music, with its clear messages, will act as a lasting reminder that you can use long after the Mission to lift up your spirits and envision the Light of Christ within you. Paul has given this retreat from the East Coast to Hawaii. He has appeared on EWTN with his music. This mission will empower you to live a more successful spiritual life. Paul will speak and sing at all Masses the weekend before the Mission. All are invited and this Mission is free. A free will offering will be taken for those who want to help Paul extend the reach of his ministry. All presentations are 90 minutes and conducted in the church. Want more information?
