Brian Rice Baroque Suite For Four Bassoons Brian Rice Baroque Suite For Four Bassoons Contents I. Bouree p. 1 II. Gavotte p. 4 III. Sarabande p. 7 IV. Intermezzo p. 10 V. Gigue p. 17 Program Notes This suite consists of five dances, four in the form of Baroque dances: Bouree, Gavotte, Sarabande, and Gigue. The Intermezzo is an original dance that follows the form ABC, where C is A+B. The Bouree, Sarabande and Gigue are stylistically Baroque, while the Gavotte fills the Baroque dance form with uncharacteristic harmonies and rhythms. Performance Notes Baroque ornamentation should be added at the appropriate time in all the dances. In the Bouree, care should be taken to make the melodic idea sound seamless as it is being passed between the players. Acknowledgment I would like to thank Walter Ross for providing me with the idea of composing for a Bassoon quartet. Duration: 6 minutes
