Red Scarf Girl “Coming of Age” Assignment and Rubric Ji-‐li has grown up and changed throughout the course of the memoir Red Scarf Girl. Many of the obstacles and struggles that she faced throughout the story forced her to make very mature, life changing decisions. Just like all of you, Ji-‐li makes difficult choices throughout her own story that affect her future. For this assignment, you will choose a quote that demonstrates an example of Ji-‐li’s “Coming of Age.” After choosing your quote, you will begin by explaining what Ji-‐li thought and believed about her world before the shift. Then, using one of our “Coming of Age” shifts, you will explain how Ji-‐li’s understanding of her own life and world changed and how the situation or obstacle referenced by your quote helped her grow up, make a mature decision, and learn something new.
