Practice AP Spanish Language Exam (counts as Final Exam): TBA
AP Spanish Language Exam: TBA
Projects: TBA
Course Contents:
Essays/Writing (Formal and Informal):
One essay of 200 words approximately
every two-three weeks will be required. Source material will include readings from Abriendo Paso:
Lectura, prompts from AP Spanish, Authentik and selected authentic material from periodicals and
broadcasts. The emphasis in first semester will be more on informal writing such as letters,
emails, messages and dialogs. The emphasis in second semester will shift to more formal writing.
$
Speaking (Formal and Informal):
All students are required to speak in Spanish
during class and this counts towards their participation grades. In addition, there will be both
formal and informal speaking exercises continually throughout the course. The focus in the first
semester is on the informal speaking and then it will shift to formal speaking in the second
semester. The prompts originate from periodicals that students read during the activity and
authentic audio sources. Some of the students' speaking activities will be recorded for the teacher
to grade at a later date and provide feedback and others will be assessed immediately when
presented in class.
$
Reading:
Students will read a series of unedited short stories and poetry by important
authors in the text Abriendo Paso: Lectura. Students will also read authentic newspaper and
magazine articles frequently throughout the year.
$
Listening:
The teacher speaks consistently in Spanish. All exercises in listening
comprehension and integrated skills originates from authentic sources. Some exercises will utilize
the AP Spanish workbook by José Díaz. As much as possible listening activities will involve
subsequent speaking or writing exercises related to the listening passages in order to integrate
skills. Towards the end of second semester some listening comprehension exercises will take place
in isolation for test taking purposes.
$
Culture:
Discussions on culture will consistently take place stemming from the
literature and periodical readings, current events and listening excerpts.
$
Grading Policy.
Projects:
There will be at least one per semester. They will primarily be all
encompassing exercises that integrate a number of skills (reading, writing,
listening and speaking). They will be recorded as tests grades.
Tests:
There will be at least one or two per quarter. They will include grammar and
vocabulary exercises as well as assessment of speaking, listening, reading
and/or writing proficiency. Topics and source material for the 4 main skills
will be based on readings and material from Abriendo Paso: Lectura, AP
Spanish, Authentik and current material selected from authentic language
sources such as newspapers, radio and television broadcasts. The speaking
and writing assessments will be both formal and informal. In all cases these
assessments will include a listening and/or reading prompt on which students
will base their response.
Quizzes:
Quizzes will generally cover recent vocabulary and grammatical topics under
study.
Oral:
These assessments will be varied. They will be based on 1-2 authentic stimuli
written and/or spoken as well as impromptu speeches, debates, etc. on
specific topics
Essays:
They will be graded and entered as quiz grades. Please see:
Essays/Writing (Formal and Informal) under course content for more
details.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned for review of lessons and preparation for class
discussion on reading and listening assignments.
Participation:
Participation is defined as a demonstrated effort to use Spanish exclusively at
all times, constructive contribution to group activities, a demonstrated effort
to complete in-class assignments within the allotted time, note-taking,
staying on-task (not socializing), bringing required materials everyday and
maintaining a respectful attitude towards classmates, teacher and subject
